Name of Store: Adult Video Type of Pirated Merchandise Sold: Adult XXX DVD's Description: Several clerks (4-5) work at this store. . They rent and sell pirated copies of Adult DVD movies. The exact number of original:pirated ratio is uncertain, but I estimate it at 2:1. Considering, this is the largest video store in this metropolitan city, it's a huge deal. I've seen pirated copies of Jules Jordan Videos, Westcoast, Vivid, Digital Playground, Rodney Moore Videos, etc, etc.
I am certain these discs are pirated because the DVD blue recording surface is that of an amateur "burned" copy instead of a professional copy with a silver surface. Also, the DVD has been compressed from an original Dual layer disc to fit onto a single layer disc - thereby degrading the quality of the movie. I know this because I have bought the original copies from legitimate large retailers and compared it with the pirated copy.
I find this incredibly frustrating because I confronted them about it and demanded a refund and they refused to honor it.
This is in Canada by the way. I've already reported them to Canadian Motion Pictures Distributors Association (CMPDA). I'm not sure if they will do anything about it or if they don't deal with adult movies.
Any help would be appreciate on this matter. Please move this if it's in the wrong forum
E-mail me at thorus99@hotmail.com if you want to leave a message or if you want more info.

On one side your are being right. On the other side you are a snitch.
I'll be honest with you. I actually didn't realize how bad piracy is until I experienced it first-hand. I rented Jules Jordan's Elastic Assholes #5 (original copy is 2 Dual-layer DVD's) from the store and bought the original copy from elsewhere and compared the two. The quality of the former was atrocious, just crap (like the good ol' days of VCD). They managed to squeeze it into 2 SL-DVD's. I was just fed up.
I'm guessing that me attempting to snitch them might get nowhere...but at least it's worth a try.
It might be a good idea to report this to the companies whose products are being pirated. They have a direct interest because they are losing sales. I know that some companies are very interested in cracking down on pirates.
I'd suggest you contact the companies directly who's DVDs are there. I know that Evil Angel is certainly one that protects their IP - others may do to a greater or lesser extent.
Mod: @Alex~ Give it a rest. You know the rules here.
Canada has had some fairly restrictive laws in the past when it come's to hardcore porn which most Canadian's are unaware of until one of there packages get's confiscated at the border. Since the birth of the internet I havent ordered anything through the mail so I don't know if the laws are the same or if they've relaxed but you might want to see if there are any reasons why these dvd's are different from the originals. If you report them you could end up with nothing. I used to order spanking dvd's and tapes and out of about 10 I ordered only one ever came and that was because the retailer sent it disuised as a family vacation video. The other 9 were confiscated and forms were sent to me stating they were obscene and going to be destroyed.
There is one company in Canada notorious for pirating product and most of us are aware of who they are. I for one would appreciate it if you would provide me the name of the store privately via email.
And you are not a snitch. Everyone loses when some scumbag sells an inferior home-made copy of a movie except the scumbag.
P.S. Not that it has any relevance but I'm originally from Canada and I frequently visit adult stores when I'm up there just to check on the very thing you posted about.
That's why I go too. Why can't my girlfriend understand how important the work I'm doing is? I've been collecting evidence for the last 10 years. lol
Seriously, how do these guy's get away with it. I don't understand how they can sell and rent that many pirated video's without getting nailed. If it's not about getting around censorship law's then ya they should be busted.

I used to work at a sleazy Yonge St. porno shop and I have an idea.
Do the disc that they're selling have proper Ontario Film Review Board "Adult Sex Film" stickers?
The OFRB is a good place to report piracy in Ontario. Especially if they are pirating films that aren't approved.
one of the reasons i stopped going to the video stores and renting and joined up with the online mail rental sites is because almost all video stores here in brooklyn use fakes. and the stores don't even try to cover it. when you play the discs, you can actually see the remote control functions, flipping through the menus, just terrible. these copies, especially vhs, are also notorious for timing out so that the last half of the last scene gets cut off. sometimes the picture skips, it gets grainy because the tape must have been used several times, the discs are filthy and scratched, ect ect. everyone knows this, but in all my days, i've only seen 1 video store "caught." 2 others simply ran out of business.
Both Digital Playground and JJ Video visit here so hopefully they will read this. I think that JJ Video can be contacted through posts they have made but I think that Digital Playground can not.
And don't listen to Alex, shutting down pirates helps everyone from the company being ripped off to the consumer being ripped off.
There was a fairly lengthy thread about this topic just a month or so ago. I suggest you read it for some tips on reporting piracy....and ignore all the ones that say "don't be a whistleblower" lol.
I wonder if this store is one of the branch that I used to work for. They got away with putting prohibited shit on their shelves for awhile until something happened and the store was mysteriously raided by the film classification board. Whoops! Anyways, when I worked for this branch, head office used to send us pirated copies of stuff that they supposedly had the copyrights for and therefore said we could sell it to make extra money. Not sure how legal that was, or if it was even true about the copyright thing, but that's how it was. Needless to say, my customers were nerver too impressed when they went to purchase said "totally legal pirated disc", we'd give the whole we own the copyright speel and they just looked at us like we had five heads. LOL.
Out of curiosity, Quasar, would you mind if I emailed you to see if it is the same company that you claim does it all the time? Or could you email me? Something tells me it probably is, being one of the biggest distributors in Canada.

That was a different kind of piracy. The one described here is more insidious because it makes you pay for inferior copies of the product. The internet stuff is just illegal copying. This is full-on piracy where somebody is making money through false pretenses.
I fully support the reporting of this kind of mess because it defrauds consumers.

They probably get away with it because there are more important issues in this world than helping corporations make yet more money by selling consumers an inferior product.
And whoever it was that said by ending piracy you end the consumer being ripped off, I would disagree. It's well known by many that even in the absence of competition from copyright infringers the RIAA and MPAA through "creative accounting" rip off their artists, writers, actors, and other employees so they don't have to pay them anything in royalties.
T0201, I'm getting really tired of you trotting out your justifications for pirating copyrighted material at every opportunity. As the Forum Etiquette says, You do not need to repeat your same opinion on something 122 times, particularly when it has fuck-all to do with the subject being discussed.

Sassy- Quasar is talking about a company that both Evil Angel and Jules Jordan Video are suing. One of their names is Kaytel.

I fail to see how discussing the ways in which consumers are ripped off by content producers somehow justifies copyright infringement. Or how content producers rip off their own employees, in the case of the MPAA and RIAA, is justifying copyright infringement by consumers. One has nothing to do with the other.
And I've always maintained that content producers can deal with CI's not by fighting them with lawyers, which isn't very cost effective, but by modifying their business model to work with the new technology that allows their content to be produced so easily. This position though in no way justifies CI.
At first I was a bit hesitant about posting this, but since I'm getting more support here, more info's along the way. Moreover, unlike Internet piracy which is difficult to control, this is a physical store that you can walk into and meet the pirates behind this illicit scheme.
This makes me so mad. Retailers only have to pay $1-3 for legit copies of the titles you listed. How cheap do you have to be to not be satisfied with legitimately selling a $2 DVD for $20?
I too have noticed in big cities, especially in Europe but in the States too, that selling bootlegs is openly accepted. People set up stands in the middle of the fucking street selling movies that haven't even been released in that country's cinemas yet! The DVD's don't even have cases, just paper envelopes and "300" or "Road Hogs" written with black marker on the top of the DVD.
And of course people buy the shit knowing that it's a bootleg.
Fuck this "snitch" bullshit. "Snitch" is a word that bullies and criminals use to get over on you. If someone tells you to not speak the truth, that person is trying to control you.
Tricia, those are the bastards I worked for for a year. Bring em DOWN! I was happy to find out that they got raided, thanks to a little bird who told the film classification board! I had emailed Quasar about who it was and almost fell off my chair when my suspicions were confirmed.

That's great; and this thread has nothing to do with either one. So, we really don't need you interrupting this thread so you can have this conversation with yourself.
Something tells me that the fine folks from that company don't actually visit this site. It's not one of the "approved" ones that we were allowed to visit when I worked for them. I really doubt anyone from there even knows about this site.
And the worst that could happen? They may sick the manager from the Ottawa store on you. She's a fucking bitch. She may actually be a man, so watch your ass, literally.

Also if you really want to stick it to this store let the Revenue Canada know they are evading taxes on fraudulent product. Ontario takes taxes very seriously.
The address for the store that Joysticks gave, I honestly don't remember if that company has a store in Toronto. I mean, they must, they have a lot in Ontario, but I really don't remember if there is one there or not. Would need the actual store name (pm'd or emailed to make sure) If it IS the same company, Quasar is right, they won't seek revenge. Believe me.
i assure you that they are NOT different kinds of piracy. one facilitates the other.
there are 2 popular methods.
order 1 legit copy from a distributor, rip it to a hard drive, shrink it to fit on a 4.7 GB dvd, then burn it to the disc. not counting the labor cost of 20 minutes total pc time, the blank media costs about .25 per disc.
OR
download the entire dvd rip off the internet (already shrunk to size), then burn it to dvd.
it's obvious which one requires less "work", is less costly, and leaves no paper trail. odd buying habits are a dead giveaway, and distributor sales reps can recognize this type of buyer a mile away. no re-orders, no deep numbers on the hottest titles, etc.

My point was, no-one is charging the customer any money to download the internet copy. He only needs to know how and where to get it. The places where you can get these illegal copies do not charge for access. Its a free-for-all. (And co-incidentaly, full uncompressed DVD-9s are shared as well from time to time).
Granted, there are a small number of people who will take these copies and then try to resell them. I agree that this is no different from the worst kind of piracy.
But if they just keep the copies for personal use, it is only "soft" piracy because no-one made a profit from getting them the materials. It is still not completely right -- but not as wrong as trying to make money off something you don't have the rights to.
Not the same place. And this company doesn't have viewing booths in their stores, unless that's something new that they just put in within the past 8 months.
It's stealing, there is no soft piracy. If you steal something from a store for personal use is that "soft" shoplifting? If you rob someone for personal use is that "soft" robbery?
YES, they do have a private viewing booth at the back of the store and I believe it's ONLY 1 movie allotted for a maximum of 2 hours. The clerks are of South Asian descent (Indian/Pakistani?).
YES, arkdvd is correct. They use some variation of this method. If you get lucky, you might get your hands on the master (legit) copy when you rent a dvd. I guess they've tossed in the original copy along with the dupes to avoid making the piracy seem too obvious (like it's not obvious enough right now).
Here's another giveaway: If you inspect the DVD label, you'll spot something fishy. Instead of using those commercial thermal printers used for labelling and printing images on discs, they probably use some amateur "CD stomper" kit that pastes an adhesive paper onto the disc. I must admit, it's done pretty well.
Hey conquistador, I will give the Ontario Film Review Board a try, although methinks they're more of a censorship committee than a piracy watchdog.
For the skeptics out there thinking that I should leave it alone and that this sort of behaviour isn't really hurting the big porn companies "who make millions anyways", well I hate to break it to you but they are hurting a lot of others indirectly involved in the business. Case in point: I've decided to switch retailers to another store 1 block away. So far I've yet to encounter a dupe copy from this new store...his material seems legit, although he has a much smaller selection than store A (the shady store). He says business is slow (hmmm...I wonder why - even during supposedly busy hours) and the store operating costs are mounting. Now, if you were to walk into the shady store that same time of day, you would see more customers.
ark: there's an even bigger method of piracy that's just as prevalent if not moreso...mass distribution of pirated DVD's. A lot of bootlegs are produced offshore or as part of organized crime (or organized "soft" crime, I guess). There are warehouses with full presses devoted to producing bootleg DVD's.
I find the easiest way to spot a bootleg DVD is the cheap-ass cover. If you're not gonna spend $3 for a legit DVD, then you surely won't spend $1.50 for a high-gloss dvd cover.
that method of piracy (overseas) usually targets mainstream movies a lot more. A LOT more. my background is in both mainstream and adult and i have collaborated with the MPAA on mainstream piracy.
with adult piracy, though it may also thrive overseas, there's no need to start anywhere else than in our own backyard. in recent years past, we can recall problems david sturman and jill kelly have ("allegedly") had with duplicators selling product out the backdoor.
when i first got into the business, i used a few different local southern california distributors. one of the "reputable" distributors in downtown los angeles was duping and packaging product in the warehouse. they didn't get any of my business after i discovered it.
if i recall correctly, you were employed at an adult store. so you know that some producers price themselves out of independent rentailer budgets. digital playground and jules jordan are a couple examples. so the unethical shops, feeling the squeeze of larger/better operations, but looking to maintain revenue while cutting cost, turn to piracy to stock and replenish their inventory.
you know that DP and JJ (again, just examples, not picking on anyone) NEVER offer catalog drops at the attractive budget price points. and independents weren't likely to meet howard's minimum purchase of 300 pieces at vivid either.
i don't know what region you are in, but i can tell you this: in southern california and nevada (where i had retail and rentail locations) the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of pirated product reaches the shelves in only TWO ways.
method (a): some jackass will come in to your shop selling good quality rips with piss poor packaging/shrink wrap. these have been duped and then packaged with bootleg artwork. the second tip off is in the pitch, when they offer a price i can't get even when i'm buying DIRECT.
method (b): some jackass will come in to your shop selling good quality rips in a plain white sleeve. these have been bootlegged off the internet.
