It sounds like perhaps your card has something going on with it's formatting. It's unlikely that it's NTFS, but what you describe sounds like a permissions issue. You are able to copy the files to your hard drive, so that's good. Can you change the file names once you have them on the hard drive? If so, you're probably all set. If not you might have to set permissions on the files on the hard drive now that they are there.
As for the card, once you are certain you have all of your photos off of it, just reformat it with your camera's formatting utility. That should clear up any weirdness with the format. Take some new photos and try to transfer them and see what happens. If you still have issues, you might have a card issue, but it's hard to say without doing some testing as I have described.
