I'm talking about consistant near-perfect video quality with a decent menu system, etc. I am wondering what other companies out there really invest in the quality of their dvd as opposed to just porting some video to mpeg-2 onto a dvd disc, using a quick menu creator and slapping a $39 pricetag on it. That's the trouble with dvd it seems- when the video quality is bad, it seems even worse than vhs because it is so much more visible. Every Private DVD i've seen is damn near perfect, minus a crappy menu at times.
I would say Evil Angel has some really good dvds. I have two of theirs and am waiting on Flesh Hunter 3 but I have also rented several and they all look great. The menus are done very well and divided into sensible categories such as cumshots, oral, anal, dp, etc. This makes it very easy to get to your favorite scene and also to the part of that scene you like the most so high marks go to Tricia and Evil Angel!!!!!

Private has excellent DVD production and Private's DVD's will play on most DVD players. The sound is also well mixed in Private DVD's. Evil Angel DVD's as Bono wrote are also excellent. EA DVD's have lots of DVD extras and the menus are not afterthoughts. One caveat about Evil Angle is because of the extended time and dual layering, EA DVD's often do not track well on older players, game playing DVD drives, as well as certain oddball players. Until I got my new Sony player, I had problems playing most EA DVD's. Usually the problem is slight like intermittent pixellation or difficulty accessing the extras.
Red Light seems to have fixed its production problems and puts out decent DVD's. Also, its releases are simultaneous but the sound mixing is sometimes weak.
Anabolic and Diabolic have okay DVD's but there are few extras in the menu, and their DVD releases are many months behind the VHS releases.

Private, Elegant Angel (I only saw the defective ones - I know that the problem were fixed - and they had decent image and sound), Wicked, Digital Playground.
People is always talking how good Evil Angel DVDs are, that they are #1! well I don't think so (maybe #3, after Private and Red Light) and that is because the total lack of previews in their DVDs, (at least in Rocco's and C. Clark's). One example: The other day Speelie was talking about a preview of Ass Collector, a dvd to be released in September. (he saw it in the VHS version of Revers Gangbang 2). ..well I got the RGB 2 DVD and the preview is nowhere to be found. So What's up with that?!? ..They are good giving extra footage and fetish menus but if I have to get the VHS versions of their movies to see previews, that really sucks.
What about Hustler? I have seen Barely Legal 7 and Barely Legal on Vacation, and both are excellent in terms of video quality, in my opinion better than what I have seen from Private, Evil Angel or anyone else save mainstream companies. They also have an interesting way of organizing the chapter menus. Not many extras on the discs, though.
Although the reviews I have seen in places like the Adult DVD Empire site (there are seem to suggest that the Hustler video quality isn't always consistent. Probably will have to investigate further into this matter.
Also, my experiences seem to run so much counter to the general consensus that I do not trust anything but my own observations any more. (I haven't found Private discs to be all that great, for instance. On one of their compilations I own the video varies from very good to halfway decent, depending on the scene.)
Don't forget VCA . I have many DVDs from them. They have a great picture quality. Just saw CLUB SIN with one of my favourite stars Ashlyn Gere. Best picture quality I ever saw on Adult-DVD, also better then Private I think. Great behind the scenes... intervwies with Ashlyn and Chloe. And they have a multi angle feature that works for the whole scene. Must have title for fans of high quality porn DVDs.
Any new releases will be of better video quality than ones that have been released years ago, with that said:
(In no particular order, the BEST video quality:) VCA Wicked Digitil Sin
-Red Light District has made some strides in their DVDs. -Extreme Associates have taken a down turn, HIGHLY AVOIDABLE. -Diabolic is usually very crisp picture.
EA DVD's have lots of DVD extras and the menus are not afterthoughts.
Not Joey's. But the video is usually very crisp on Evil Angel's DVDs. (Plus a lot of Evil Angel's releases were shot on handheld cameras, whether or not that has anything to do with DVD quality, I don't know?) But I still love, and think that EVIL ANGEL is the best.

It does, but good lighting is the key to getting a real clear shot.
Although I'm not always crazy about their movies, VCA, Wicked, and Marc Dorcel (through Wicked) consistently put out the highest quality discs. I love Evil Angel movies but I couldn't possibly defend their video quality against these three studio giants. Of those three I'd say Wicked has the best menus.

As the reviewer of some of those Barely Legal discs I'd have to agree with that statement. Most of the series looks great but a few are quite dismal...Barely Legal #4 comes to mind.

Which is exactly the reason why features shot under controlled environments (studios) usually yield the best video quality. Up-scale equipment helps too. But why do Vivid's discs suck? ...please be as brief as possible.
I've only seen one Hustler DVD, but I can't say that I was at all impressed with the technical aspects.
I forgot before, but Kick Ass has had some very good transfers from what I've seen.

For me "near-perfect video quality" means: * PAL * bright colours * good lighting * good camerawork
A-companies: Private, Videorama, DBM
Puaka is a typical European B-company: raw, basic, cheap, contents not bad (can be quite good - if you are lucky), technically average. I consider Anabolic/Diabolic qualitatively in the same league as Puaka, and Evil Angel somewhat better.
