I recently watched Devil in Miss Jones and I really enjoyed this movie. I think it's probably the best porn feature I've seen, also considering the time it was made. Very impressed by the performance of lead star. (Spelvin??). So, I was wondering: are there any other movies from that period that are similar to "Devil" (and I don't mean the plot, but rather overall quality and look&feel)? In other words, if you saw DMJ and liked it, what other features can you recommend (from the 70s preferably)?

Zoid, what is it about DMJ that you liked so much? Was it the "real movie" aspect of it, the type of sex involved, the use of sex in the context of plot, or just the basic seriousness of the guilt/damnation theme? DMJ was not an average porn film, either in its own time or now, and is miles removed in style and approach from many of the other "classics" of the period. So more info might help some of the other posters point you in a more specific direction. And yes, it is completely different from the sequels that followed many years later (which doesn't mean that they aren't worth seeing, however).
Thanks for the suggestions so far. :)It's difficult to answer this question. If I could point out one aspect of the film and say: this is what I am looking for - I would. But it's really the combination of all things you've mentioned: obviously sex, the way sex is integrated in the plot, plot itself (and yes, seriousness of it), lead star acting (which I thought was very good), music also, and last but not least - something that I can only define as "artistic touch". I think like you said yourself, it's style and approach that I liked.
By the way, DMJ is not the first classic I've seen. Maybe I should have mentioned that earlier. I saw Taboo 1 and 2, Vista Valley PTA, Dirty Western (this one sucked), Alice in Wonderland (this is more of a parody on porn), Behind the green door and some vignette called Babylon Pink. DMJ was in the fact the last in this row. Except for "Green Door", which was intriguing, nothing really came close to DMJ (IMO).
I'm surprised Through The Looking Glass hasn't been mentioned yet because that's one of very few adult movies, classic or otherwise, that I'd put on a par with the original Devil In Miss Jones . It's another dark movie, very artistic, and it sounds like the kind of thing you might like. Reflections is another taboo-busting movie that might be worth a look, although it's not on the same level as the last two. 3am is also an excellent example of a 'serious' Golden Age movie.
Finally, although they're quite different to the titles I've mentioned thus far, I should point you in the direction of The Opening Of Misty Beethoven and The Ecstasy Girls . These are light-hearted but very sophisticated films - essential viewing.

I should also have mentioned Odyssey , another movie by Gerard Damiano. This one is also very artistic and thought provoking. It won't be for everyone, though, because it has a real air of despair about it.
Ok, thanks again for recommendations. Just to update on the situation: I was able to find Insatiable tape in the deepest corner of local videorental store. Sorry to say, but I was disappointed with it. Don't get me wrong though, the film is adequate from purely masturbatory point of view, however it is not what I was looking for. Personally, I think this movie is closer to modern day porn rather than older porn. The only scene I really liked is the one where Chambers gave BJ to the guy whome she picked in her car. I guess I like naughty or "innocent" Chambers more than slutty and "dirty" Chambers.

I've never seen the original DMJ, but just recently saw DMJ 2 directed by Henri Pachard, and wow, I have to say how much I enjoyed this flick!
Everything from the story to the elaborate costuming was first rate, including the usual top notch treatment by VCA.
The sex was almost incidental to the amusing and witty script, so in that regard, it's definitely not like most modern porn. I can't recall ever seeing a guy getting his tail sucked so good that it lit up and shot off sparks either.
I might have to end my reviewing 'moratorium' for this classic flick, but in the meantime, here's MORE SCREENSHOTS
PS - pretty despicable of Doctor G, but not really surprising. This guy is as bogus as his doctorate degree, which was acquired at the same place as Sharon Mitchell's (who is also in DMJ II, btw. That's her in pic)!
I'm afraid I've never seen a review of this movie and, having only seen it once, doubt I can cover it adequately off the top of my head. I don't even remember why I bought it - probably simply because of the director. Anyway, it's divided in to three parts, each of which paints its own bleak picture of human sexuality. There's a real air of despair about it, particularly the final section featuring Suzanne Mcbain. I remember being emotionally drained by the end of it so it's clearly far from your average adult movie. I'm guessing Damiano had more than a passing interest in existentialism around this time because, whether intentional or not, Miss Jones bears a striking resemblance to Sartre's Huis Clos.

I managed to obtain Barbara Broadcast DVD. Not bad, not bad. The only critique I have is that the sex scenes are too fragmented, especially in the beginning. And also that the film seems to be loaded with blowjobs. Is that Henry's kink or something?
I wanted to go back and respond to this thread, since I have been too busy lately to do so.
Damiano is to NYC porn what DeRenzy is to the SF version; except he didn't have his own theater to work out of. He made two types of porn films throughout his career: simple, sex-romp slapstick comedies (such as Deep Throat , or Meatball , to name two from the period of DMJ ) and dark, moody, somewhat artsy pretentious films that combined sex with philosophy, psychology, and literature. On the whole, DMJ probably is the most effective of the latter type, because the premise of the film is simple, and doesn't involve a lot of temporal plotting, character exposition, and all the other components of story that induce anxiety, boredom, and confusion in most hardcore viewers. Practically none of his subsequent efforts matches up to DMJ , although the film's success persuaded many pornographers to imitate Damiano and produce "serious" subjects, leading to a craze for unusual, offbeat, and especially satanic hardcore films. From this group of films, I would suggest the following:
Story of Joanna : this is Damiano's second best "serious" film, although many viewers consider it his masterpiece--a hardcore variation on The Story of O . I commented recently on this film for another thread, and have since found out that it is presumably available on DVD (or DVD-R, since Excalibur is the retailer). Beware of cuts, however.
Night Hunger : a later Damiano film that is worth seeking out; it is in some ways a much more sophisticated remake of Odyssey , although the story is completely different. The fact the Damiano saw himself as a filmmaker as well as a pornographer (and didn't see the two things as a contradiction-in-terms) was never more evident than here. I can comment more extensively on Odyssey if you like, although I consider the film remarkable for Susan McBain's performance (as usual) and not much else.
Sleepyhead : this film was made about the same time as DMJ , by Erik Andersson. Spelvin and Tina Russell star as two sexually-repressed sisters whose urges are awakened at last. One of the central themes of so much 1970's porn was the exploration of the female's sexual identity (DMJ is connected with that trend), and her attitude towards her own sexual desires. Sounds like a pretty good subject for porn, as long as you had performers who could act a little. They do here, and this one is worth seeing.
The Seduction of Lyn Carter : ok, this is one of my favorite old pornos, about a married middle-aged woman (Andrea True, of "More, More, More" disco fame) who is lured into a sexual relationship with a evil fellow (Jaime Gillis--who else), and is then slowly dragged through the mud of sexual degradation. This was one of Sam Weston's (Spinelli, of Easy , Talk Dirty to Me , etc. fame) early masterpieces. Everyone should check this one out, which is not easy since it seems to have disappeared from the marketplace for now (Alphabluearchives does sell it, but only on VHS). Contains a classic vaginal creampie sequence, as well.
Other films I would suggest include Take Off , Her Name was Lisa (if it is available), and Mary, Mary ; Metzger's first three hardcore films are better, in my view, than Barbara Broadcast , although some fans disagree. Sdc has also made good suggestions; if you go back a few months on this board, there was a thread on Through the Looking Glass that many of us contributed to. You may also want to check out Defiance , although I think that notorious title is overrated; Armand Weston (who also made Take Off , Taking of Christina , and Expose Me, Lovely ) is one of the greatest hardcore filmmakers of the 1970's, however.

Ordering from alphablue remains an option, but I really really prefer DVD when it comes to buying.

'The Kinky Ladies Of Bourbon Street' (not the original title) has much of the 'ghostly feel' you seem to be looking for. It's tape only however. Like DMJ, it features the theme of suicide.
There is also a adult/horror crossover thing called 'Hard Gore'. I haven't seen it.
Why not try 'Nightdreams', a must own film if you like your movies to have some imagination.
Sorry, but I don't like gore/horror. DMJ had some gore but it was marginal. After reading the synopsis, Bourbon ladies seem a bit too weird for me (explosive dynamite dildos, what's that all about?? ) although I very much enjoyed two other Mulot's films: little schoolgirls and La femme objet.
