I’ve heard a rumor that the cinematographer on Radley Metzger’s The Opening of Misty Beethoven won an Oscar only a couple of months later under his real name. Apparently Jamie Gillis alludes to this fact on VCA’s dvd in his audio commentary. Has anybody listened this commentary? Can somebody please tell me who this mystery person was? I don’t really want to buy it just to find out, as I don’t want to update my widescreen vhs for a cropped version. Any info on this matter would be great!!

It's referred to in the first minute or so of the commentary, but not by Jamie Gillis but rather Gloria Leonard. She simply says that the cinematographer for Misty went on to win the Oscar for Best Documentary. Nothing else to go on, and especially hard since the Academy started giving out two awards for documentaries (feature and short) around that time. Jamie said he didn't know that.

There was a similar discussion between Gloria Leonard and Bill Margold on the commentary track for Nurses of the 407th. Again, minor details such as the name of the cinematographer and the title of the documentary were conveniently left out.
