That continued pretty much with the Color Climax, Rodox era in the arly 1970's in Scandinavia as well as loops made by Swedish Erotica and other companies. Even though there was a lot of sex (more than feature theatrical films), there was always a story line in these loops/episodes. That meant relatively short single reel movies with limited sound and visual quality. In the seventies, the court cases allowed the explicit depiction of sex if there was redeeming social value. Some of the early cases had to do with Joyce's Ulysses and DH Lawrence, but that filtered down to movies with "stories" and fake documentaries that could be shown publicly in movie theaters. For the most part, movie theater porn created some expectation of a "feature presentation". That pushed the need for credits with named actors, sustained stories, scripts, etc. The Golden Age is basically pron made to be shown and sold in movie theaters, but even then there were a lot of features that were loosely strung together loops or even just sex scenes with no dialogue or situation though it was 90 minutes worth of them. VCR porn brought on the fast forward button and a big jump in the sheer quantity of movies produced. Both worked against the "feature" as did the success of reality or gonzo material. Finally, downloaded porn made the "single scene" approach the main delivery form. I don't think it was a single movie, but I think if a "movie" marked the end of feature porn, it was probably Stagliano's Buttman, which oddly enough has sort of a "story line". In the late 1960's and early 1970's, in the early days of US porn (before DEEP THROAT, BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR, DEVIL IN MISS JONES, etc) there were a lot of movies showing hard-core content that were disguised as "documentaries" to get around obscenity laws/decisions: HOLLYWOOD BLUE (1970) by Bill Osco, MAKING THE BLUE MOVIE, PERSONALS by Armand Weston, AFRICANUS SEXUALIS by Matt Cimber, KAMA SUTRA '71, WORLDS OF LOVE, and dozens of others. All that pretense was shucked with such successful breakthrough releases as DEEP THROAT and BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR in 1972. From then on both US and Euro hard core feature films (at first shot on film and shown theatrically) was all plotlines, until the arrival of Ed Powers, John Stagliano and others with more and more accent on sex acts and minimal plot. In the golden age (1970's-early 1980's) of porn, plot lines were inherent in that the producers/distributors/exhibitors had to get around an array of obscenity laws, which mandated that a porn movie to be considered obscene had to be taken on its WHOLE and had to have some redeeming qualities. So the authorities could not just extract two minutes of a hc movie and say that was obscene. De Renzy and the Mitchel Bros were busted just about every week on obscenity charges and always successfully defended themselves. But to say or even suggest that early porn had not plotlines is sheer nonsense. The short loops produced in Scandinavia in late 1960's and early 1970's, as brief as they were and with much accent on perhaps one or two sex acts all had some semblance of a plot (even the hard-core magazines had a story to it, see the early Private magazines as an example). The Lasse Braun early 8m loops had titles, and fully developped plotlines and were shot all over the place. And early in the 1900's stag movies were produced basically for more classier flop-houses/bordellos and had titles, intertitles anbd plotlines even though to a great extent they were silent. With the influx of the video age, the porn production move from East Coast to the West Coast and sunnier climate, and greater influx of actresses whose basic asset was their body and enthusiasm and not necessarily acting abilities, drove the plot-laden movies to a handful of production companies (Vivid, Sin City, etc) who still continued to produce them. With the arrival of Ed Powers, John Stagliano, Max Hardcore, Anabolic gang-bangs, etc, it was no longer necessary for most of the production companies to do feature movies with a plot.
