Although I can somewhat see their point, at the same time I think the add-ons were a big draw for a lot of people.

They are getting rid of those who are not maintained - I have no idea how regularly they must be updated but some are only compatible with 1.0.* - and ones that aren't downloaded ofter.

It's probably old news to everyone here, but I installed the No Script add-on a few hours ago and am just amazed how much faster pages load. You'll have to tweak it for some sites (left click on the S with a no circle around it in the lower right of the browser and allow it for some sites), but it has been a nice addition.
