This spring, I saw that WantedList had a couple of disks from Global Media (old Heather Hunter features) that no one else had for rent, so I decided to give their 2-disk plan a shot. What follows is a chronological list of my experience with comments (Note: dates may be approximate):

April 18 - signed up for 10-day free trial, ordered 2 DVDs.
April 28 - W/L charged $17.95 to my credit card.
May 18 - W/L charged another $17.95 to card (thereby negating "10-day free trial" by moving it up the 10 days).

June 13 - I cancelled my plan (trying to beat the deadline for them charging another month's fee).

June 20 - I mailed back the last rental.
June 25 - They charged my card $24.95 as a (I guess) penalty for the disk not being back in their hands within 7 days of cancellation.

End result - 11 disks rented (in 2 months) costing a total of $60.85 for an average of $5.53 per disk. Note: It would have been more than $3.25 per without their cynical $25 penalty.

I seldom kept any title longer than overnight, and turnarounds still averaged 11-12 days, while my Xrent plan averages about a 9-day turnaround. In fact, it took them a full 7 days to ship the last disk after I'd mailed back the previous one.

Their site is slow, they claim the "largest selection" (actually about 15,000 to Xrent's 26,000+), and, other than useless automatic e-mail replies, were mostly unresponsive. I gave them a full week to respond to my appeal for relief on the final $24.95 penalty, and have had no real response as of today.

In short, although I have never been 100% pleased with Xrent, WantedList makes them look utterly spectacular by comparison.

Caveat Emptor , my friends.

Hey Fatalbert,

Could you please post your username (not your password) here so I can look up your account? I'm not a customer service rep but this will help me trace the chain of events with your account. If we were in error then I'll definitely talk to CS.

Thanks

Hey there,

Thanks for posting your username. I talked to CS and had a look at your account. Basically everything appears to be in order, you rented 12 DVDs on the 2 at a time plan over the course of two months.

The last disc was never received so we had to charge for it. However it appears that a few emails went back and forth and one of our reps asked that you submit what's called a 1510 report to the post office so we can issue your refund. She didn't get a reply, so perhaps the email was lost in spam. Anyway I've asked her to resend that email to you.

I'd recommend filing that report - I've seen them, it takes 5 minutes to fill out, and we'll be happy to refund the cost of the movie once we receive the report from the post office.

As for turnaround time, I checked out your account and you're right, average turnaround was 10.5 days. I don't know how much this has to do with our service, the post office, or how long movies were kept at home. But I can assure you that our movies go out on time every day and we ship from CA and NJ. Hope this helps.

Hey fatalbert....

That about matches my experience with Wantedlist. Even tho I am 1-2 days AT MOST from their New Jersey warehouse, turnaround was still 10-12 days. Like you, I contacted them well in advance of my anniversary date to cancel, and they charged me for another month service anyway.

I've had fairly good results with the Excalibur Hit Movies plans. I can recommend them, Wantedlist I cannot.

Okay. WL's Rental Support sent me the "1510 Report" letter on 7/18, excruciatingly timing it to coincide with my going out of the country for a couple of weeks.

In this letter, Audrey claims that they "...have yet to receive this title," and further, that they "...have no way of knowing whether (I) have returned a movie, unless (I) indicate such." I take this last to mean that they keep no receiving records, I dunno.

I was further instructed to "file a missing mail report at (my) local post (office)...in person."

When I read this upon my return home, I replied on 8/3 that I had dropped off the disk in question inside the P.O., and that it is implausible that WL did not receive it since it bore their own pre-printed mailing label.

I further informed them that I am too busy to diddle around with a (farcical) postal investigation -- and that I will not challenge their charge to my credit card -- but that I would give them a week to re-check their stock and rectify things before posting here. It is 8 days later and I haven't heard back from them.

I don't mean to bore everyone with all these details, but I want people to learn from my mistakes.

In the end, I'm guessing it was simple incompetence in record-keeping rather than out-and-out dishonesty, but with this -- in addition to the problems cited in my first post -- I am warning consumers to avoid WantedList.

As I said before, Xrent is far superior in every aspect, imperfect though they may be.

Ah well, another one chalked up to experience, me buckos.

wantedlist was not very good. Starts out good. My trial I was getting dvds 2 days after they said it sent. I'd send it back and they would have it 2-3 days later. Then I signed up for the month and I guess reached a limit and it started to take so long. They were slow to respond to emails. I canceled a few days before it was set to expire and sent the stuff back and let them know how bad it was in the cancel box. They caused me to lose trust in other companies which is a shame.

Whats odd is Wired magazine had an article on their cover 2 years a go about it and how it was new, these 2 asian guys started it up, great business idea. Well I'm sorry I am a business student, and everything I have learned both in classes such as marketing and management as well as with working in retail and being a consumer tells me that their business plan is flawed, their customer service is nonexistant, and at the rate they are going they will not be around for very long.

Hey TheMan85, sorry to hear about your experience. Could you post your WantedList username here so that I can investigate the history on your account? This would help us figure out if there are indeed issues with our level of service that need to be remedied, vs. issues beyond our control. There are always outside factors, but we are constantly improving those that we can. For example, one huge improvement was the addition of a second distribution center.

Regarding the business model, we've been around since 2001 and going strong. Obviously nowhere near the size of Netflix but a strong organization nonetheless. Here's a link to the article you mentioned, in case anyone wants to give it a read: Wired Magazine

Thanks for the fast reply, if only the customer service team was as quick and helpful as you are.
