Hello all. I wouldn't really consider myself an avid porn fan (I haven't taken the fateful step to attending conventions yet) but I do watch a fair amount of pornography. I could name you the hottest porn actresses to have come out within the last year or so (Brianna Blaze is still a favorite of mine) and I do own a modest adult DVD collection.

Mainstream porn, lately for me though, has been somewhat of a disappointment. Sure, there have been geniunely classic moments caught on film in recent years, like Natasha catching an extremely wet double facial in "Flesh Hunter 4" or Brianna Blaze looking like a typically cute high school teenager as she takes a four man gangbang in "No Cum Dodging Allowed 2" but sadly the well has been drying up.

What disappointments me about mainstream porn the most in recent months is the lack of genuieness, the lack of realness. I mean, I rarely see a good fucking nowadays. The girls don't seem to be really enjoying themselves, and it seems more like a routine visit to a dentist more than passionate lustful love-making. Gone are the days when the actress wasn't self-concious of the camera and would just fuck the guy. Now, it's all about shot placements, and "inventive" positions, and a lot of other techinicalities. How come I don't see girls riding guys with passion anymore? How come rough doggystyle has been outlawed? I rarely, rarely see a girl lying on her stomach while a guy is on top of her legs spread over hers screwing her lights out. I love that stuff, man. Now it's smooth, soft strokes while the girl is standing up on her feet. It's been a long, sad way coming for the mainstream porn industry.

Now, the only place I can get this kind of good clean, honest sex is amateur videos. I bought a copy of "Latin Teen Tryouts" and the DVD disk that's been in my current rotation is the free video that came with the order, titled "Wet Latinas #1".

I've also been checking out websites which are offering up excellent videos. Bigmouthfuls.com is one of my favorites for real sex, and so is Onionbooty.com.

Is there anyone here that can tell me that the mainstream porn industry isn't in bad a shape that I think it is? Are there good recommendable titles with real sex in them? Can anyone recommend a good teen amateur title with lots of doggystyles?

Thanks for hearing my rant out. =)

Current porn sex could accurately be described as "intense yet simultaneously impersonal". Perhaps that is what bothers you (where it doesn't look like the two performers are into each other) because if it is just the roughness factor then you might be watching the wrong stuff. There is a rather considerable amount of rough sex being filmed now. In fact, it is easily the predominant kind of action that you find now.

I wrote quite a long rant about my thoughts on current porn-I essentially hate the homogenization I see.

Seeing at least a hint of real-ness is why, even as I become jaded about so much porn, I still enjoy some of Rocco's new scenes, and scenes involving Nacho with women who were born as women. In The Dark Side of Rocco, for example, there's what you might call 'genuine fucking" between Rocco and Kathy Blanche, even though much of it is relegated to the DVD extras.

Are we complaining about the "sameness" of gonzo/wall-to-wall porn here, or are we complaining about the lack of fun and enthusiasm by the performers?

As far as the sameness issue goes--let's face it, 90+ percent of all American porn today is made by a very small number of people in the same town, practically all of whom both know and have worked for each other. This has always been true to an extent, but at least of the classic era you had New York porn, LA porn, SF porn, etc. You also had a greater variety of producers and financers and pornographers, and much more money going into the product--because the film business was more profitable. If today's porn all looks the same, it is because the same people make it, and have learned how to make it from each other. Porn today is a kind of one-party state, whether you're talking about gonzo or features. And monopolies are always bad for the consumer.

As far as the performers are concerned, I think it is very difficult to show up at someone's house, be plopped on a couch or bed, and told to be your "slutty self" while someone points a camera in your face (or up your ass). There is no fantasy in it, no role playing, no point to the action. So what we get mostly today are many jaded starlets staring blankly into the lens and implying, "Look, I'm 19, I'm broke, and I'm here because I'm getting 800 bucks to fuck and suck." This is the message that comes across the screen. Now for some fans, that might be fine--a lot of today's porn get mileage out of this premise: getting slightly uncomfortable young women to do anything for a few bucks. But you can't really expect too much enthusiasm then, can you? In fact, all the phony aggression in today's porn often seems to be some kind of replacement for authentic passion, a kind of covering up for the disinterest (and sexual inexperience, I think) of a lot of the girls. The result? You can see countless women being throat-fucked, but you can rarely find a single woman passionately and sensuously sucking a cock off.

Perhaps the only advantage of all those silly vignette set-ups in the old stuff was that it gave the performers something to "play," a sexual situation that let two or more complete strangers fuck for some reason other than the director's wallet.

And yes, there are a some exceptions to what I've described, some instances where the gonzo premise seems to work--but most of them are all made by directors working for the same company, and I don't find that a particularly healthy circumstance for the hardcore industry either.

I think you're totally spot on about the aggression thing -- aggression is a cop out. For me there's also this notion of people doing stuff to each other rather than for each other. Rarely I catch a glimpse of something that looks like he's genuinely looking to please someone other than himself. In a scene recently that I did like, the guy was cooing and carrying on all excited about "You gonna come for me sweetheart?..."while doing lovely things with his hands and mouth and just for an instant I believed he really wanted that to happen for her. It was strangely exciting to watch.

Am I the only one who actually likes the state of porn on this board? I remember around 1990 each film only had one facial if that. Now you've got cumswapping, cum swallowing, all the anal sex you can eat.... There's more product out there than you can shake a stick at. I think it's great and think it's a dream come true. Thanks to all directors and women who make my day by making quality crank material.

Especially american porn has never felt like it's real, but I don't have a big problem with that... an actor trying her/his best to give a good performance is just as appealing to me. Let us not forget that it is also a job.

In general I hate anything mainstream beacause it's almost always fake... you can never trust that what you see or hear is the real thing. Non-mainstream can't afford to produce high-class illusions like that which makes it more believable.
"Who cares?" may someone say, and that's probably why mainstream porn is mainstream... most people don't care if it's real or not because they don't care enough about it and then of course they doesn't know enough about it.

I've seen some japanese videos that feels very mutual, starting out with tender foreplay - that's so rare to see that it becomes interesting...

I love animal instinct aggressive sex... but also the romantic side of sex, which the porn industry rarely touches in a documentary way.

i think it's just easier to complain. right now there is something for everyone. If you like the harder stuff there is plenty out there. I like the softer stuff and tease an am pretty happy with a lot of those companies recent stuff so i can't bitch.

and with sooooo many people doing diff stuff and trying diff angles i cannot believe people cannot find stuff they will dig on.

Me and Rog were going round and round the other night talkin 'bout porn and it pretty much boils down to do your f'n homework and read the reviews.

I have been pretty vocal on which companies i dig on...

I get the impression that the "rougher" stuff often appeals because the impression is given that the performers are enjoying it.
Try some of the British stuff, Ben Dover (Steve Perry) for example where you have the impression that the whole shoot was a great sex session, everyone having a ball, and a camera team happened to be there (and occasionally joined in).
That, for me, is far more of a kick than a "perfect" nineteen year old getting shagged in a studio where you just know that the scene was cut, stopped, repositioned and edited, with no emotion and the "actors" more worried about their performance, than having fun.

PS (really Duh question here) but what exactly is the consensus about what "gonzo" means? It seems to have different meanings to different people

Really? Then how come the people I know who have the wildest sex lives (orgies, gangbangs, swinging, swapping, heavy power-play), people who have large collections of photographic and written porn, people who have expensive sex toys and large portions of their houses devoted to sexplay have zero interest in video porn?

Something for everyone? Get real.

It is a shame that I can't see this stuff in my rental stores.
He did "When Pornstars play" for Private and I thought if this is gonzo I'll become a fan of the genre.

Monstar, I think you missed TonyC's point.

I like watching video porn just fine, and there's lots of it that I really do like. I think a lot of TonyC's friends would like watching too, if there were actually something out there that appealed to them.

I'm a "variety man", moreso evidently than most of the people who post at ADT, and I'll tell ya... I don't see a whole lot of variety in today's porn--at all.

I don't think everyone's tastes are represented by a longshot.

That said though, there are a multitude of obsticals that prevent porn producers from offering some of the things I'd REALLY like to see, not the least of which is the delicate balance between profitablity and the costs and effort required to put together something of really high quality. Hey, you know... I'd be happy as a clam if porn producers could put out features that rival the quality of The Fashionistas on a regular basis, but that's not how the economics of porn works, and I understand that. On the other hand, I'm not at all prepared to say that everyone's taste's are represented.

Not even close--and I say that only because all of MY tastes aren't represented--and I'm a pretty savvy porn fan.

This is tantamount to saying if you don't like Bud, Miller, or Coors, you don't like beer.

When I was younger I thought that people who didn't like porn didn't like it because they were prudes. Now I know better.

I think one of the reasons there's a lack of passion is because many of the women are strippers or dancers. So making a movie becomes like a job, something that's done for the money and the money alone. There are exceptions, of course, and these always shine through.

Something for everyone ?? That's a hot one !!! yeah , there's something for everyone alright but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's done right !!!

I love cumswapping videos but they are not done properly ,in my opinion !! A threesome is exactly that , a threesome !! The girls should be into each other as well as the guy , we don't ALWAYS have to see camera acknowledgement in every fucking movie, the camera doesn't have to continuously move around , there can be alot more cumkissing without fading out right after the swapping , we don't have to have the guy yapping continuously or the director yapping as well, ass slapping , face slapping, choking, etc.

I love lesbian videos !! They are not made well for the most part !!! I don't need to see constant dildo plunging , 95 % focus on the ass , girls looking at the camera instead of each other , a ridiculous lack of kissing or body contact, non stop camera movement, special effects , multiple girl scenes which usually have zero chemistry, etc.

Sure , there's something for everybody but there really isn't because we always have to get the same formulas and styles. Everybody copies each other and we have to settle for the little bits that we can find if we actually see them !! WE have to tolerate quick editing and camera movement because it has become the standard. You want lesbian or cumswapping ... you have to get anal with that or dildos. God forbid someone would make a g/g video with lots of kissing and muff diving.

It's not a question of being fussy , it's where porn has gone and what has become the standard !!

I wouldn't go as far to say that there is no some porn for anyone.
But if you don't dig into porn then you probably will not find it.

If you go to a store, e.g., you will find lots of gonzo, andd substandard to amateurish productions, and if you are lucky a few racks of Private/Vivid style stuff.
You must be extremely lucky or have previous knowledge to find the "pearls" that could fit your taste, if you are already living out those fantasies in real life.

You certainly will not stumble about "pearls" like in the mainstream section of a store.

No indeed, this doesn't sound right.
However, how about the validity of the following statement: if you like Bud, Miller, or Coors, you don't like beer?

I understand where people's discontent with mainstream porn: I've had the same criticisms of the industry as a whole. As much as I want to, though, you can't really blame them: a successful model has been put in place, and others try to duplicate that formula. That's business in a nutshell, and at the end of the day, adult entertainment is still a business. It's much safer to follow the leaders of the pack and cash in on their success than it is to make your own path and risk failure. For all of our complaints of the homogenization of pornography, we're still buying DVDs from Evil Angel and Red Light and Platinum X and Anabolic and all of the other big name distributors that contribute to this environment of sameness. Why, then, should we expect a change? Why should they offer a product that strays from the tried-and-true formula that may be ignored by its selling audience or instigate the Feds to knock on their door when more of the same still sells big?

The thing that frustrates me about the typical porn formula today is that gender roles in the scene are too defined. The man is there to pump away at wherever his dick will fit, and the woman is there to accept his dick anywhere he puts it and ask for more. As much as the people making the product try to, they cannot break away from this male-dominant, vanilla formula. They're too afraid to give the female the dominant position in the scene because they worry that young males won't be interested in it. They don't want to introduce BDSM elements to scenes because the Christian Coalition, the American Family Association, and the National Organization of Women will all scream bloody murder over what they perceive to be elements of violence and hate in sex. Of course, this is all bunk. Anything involving a human being with breasts will make a young man horny, and the CC, AFA, and NOW are going to take offense of everything the industry does anyway.

For the record, some of the most erotic and provocative images I have ever seen have come from the Cybernet websites, but I'm sure I'll never find anything like what they are offering at my nearest video store. By looking at their model listing, I see no shortage of mainstream porn actresses jumping at the opportunity to be tied up, flogged, shocked with a cattle prod, fucked with a dildo attached to a power tool, or trapped in a tank of water, and wanting to come back again and again. So, it's not due to the reluctance of the female talent pool. On the other hand, I don't see any mainstream male stars signing up to be dominated by the same women they dominate in their movies. Where's the sense of fair play? Do they feel the need to protect their image? Are they reluctant to star in a product that is not their own, or that of one of their industry friends? Do they simply have no interest in assuming the submissive role? Once again, I have no idea behind their decisions, and I don't blame them for not turning the tables: they're getting a very good deal as it is, so why change anything?

All in all, it is all part of a trend. In a few years, a new style will emerge, and the studios and directors will saturate the marketplace with that product until all of us are in the same boat as we are. It's how this business, any business, works.

I'm new to this forum so I hope you don't mind me blowing my own trumpet but...

I occasionally give talks on "Making video erotica" at various trade shows, my qualification being that as well as being a "jobbing" cameraman I once was part of an experienced team of porn-production-professionals who started their own production company... and failed miserably.

The golden rule of starting out in porn (or any type of movie production for that metter) is: "make movies you would want to buy yourself".
It was knowing this rule, but failing to apply it to our productions which cost me (and my collegues) a hell of a lot of money, time and kudos.

Established pornographers have often moved on from the "fun" stage and are running a business, which is why they start thinking "what does the punter want" rather than producing stuff they'd want to see, since they often don't want to see erotica anymore! Their assumptions of what the buying public want are often far from the reality.

In mainland Europe, the large production companies have deals with the video/dvd rental houses whereby they have to produce a certain ammount of "mainstream" erotica. The definition of "mainstream" is made by men who don't actually appreciate porn, hence specifications like "to include at least two visible facial climax shots," and other such crap.

I'm a great fan of the U.K. "Ben Dover" series (I haven't worked with Steve Perry unfortunately) because they're made for sales, not rental and have a lot of the "realistic" qualities lacking in "mainstream" productions.

Well, the difference to feature films or all sex films is that the performers show that they are aware of the camera. In most cases one of the performers is even holding the camera while he fucks. I think this “breaking the wall between inherent film reality and the reality of the viewer” is the main appeal of Gonzo.
