David, you must be new to both ADT and RAME if you haven't seen Patrick take his lumps in each forum. It happens all the time. His big claim to fame is that he took over another guy's book, I have an early copy of it, and writes the most negative things about porn. IIRC, he's savaged Tina (whom you claim to like in one of your other threads), Kimi, and pretty much every other woman who's made more than a couple of movies in their career. His standard of what a woman needs to be attractive include, but isn't limited to, looking very, very young, can't be intelligent, must be subservient, short, and must rate as looking good enough to score a big budget, mainstream Hollywood coming of age movie. To him, once a woman hits her twenties, she's a washed up old hag.
Does any of that bother me? No, it doesn't. We each have our own standards of what we like to see in a porn movie. My problem is that he sets himself up as some kind of an expert and goes around belittling everyone who disagrees with him. The tag line mentioned above is only the tip of the iceberg of his hostility towards those of us who watch porn (not just reviewers, producers, talent, etc.). I'm surprised that anyone defending him is so unaware of his history in this regard. I've heard him laughed at on Porn Star Trading, RAME, ADT, online radio shows, various chatrooms, and a couple other forums I belong to. If anything, he loves negative comments as it bolsters his belief that he knows more than the rest of the world put together.
So I guess it's less a case of burning him in effigy or acting out of envy as much as knowing/commenting that he's out of touch enough to have earned a label for his demands: The Patrick Riley Fetish. He and I have argued about it before and maybe we'll do so again. Just keep in mind that he opened the doors to being criticized by other reviewers long before he added that preposterous tag/sig line to his posts.
I did at first read, but then I realized why he added it. Like everything else he writes, it's designed to piss people off. Hey, whatever it takes to get people to read; hard to fault him for that.
Despite the fact that it's moderated, rame is still a very tough place to be. The impact for the newcomer, or the simple occasional poster, or the quiet person who just dropped by to ask a question can be very traumatic. But you learn to get along and learn how to put that great instrument at good use (for yourself and for the others) when you understand that you *don't have to get along with everybody* and that, even though confrontations and flame-wars are an integral part of what Usenet is, you can stay away from them, if you want to. The person you mentioned is a public figure of some sort, so discussing his body of work or his attitude towards the industry when he's not here to reply it's alright. As Rog says, Riley is pretty much like Slim Shady, "God sent him to piss the world off". The more people get mad at him the more he comes through as an uncompromising, untouchable Cato The Censor of porn (that always tells it the way it is).

Thanks for your informative post about Patrick Riley. I’m somewhat new to both ADT and RAME and was not aware. I do remember reading some of his reviews ... and then moving on to other things.
What he wrote didn’t really bother me, but it also didn’t really help me in making a selection/buying decision. His ‘I know better than anyone else’ attitude came through, but I fluffed it off and moved on.
Thank you for your response, HoustonDon. I never said Patrick was a nice guy. He is honest and intelligent, has integrity, and writes well: good qualifications for a critic. I enjoy reading him even when I'm not interested in the movie he is reviewing. I am not myself involved in the industry except as a consumer, so I don't take personal offense at his criticisms: they're funny and entertaining. I won't comment on your elaborate character assassination, as it is entirely irrelevant to me, but I do agree that--as in that barbed sig line--his attitude toward any reviewer smacks of shill is quite provoking.
Ah, Tina Tyler! Wasn't she gorgeous in that scene? I'm still in love.
David, you're welcome. As far as what I said being "character assassination", I suggest that you re-read some of his comments that are easily searchable on google.com. He's said a lot worse and while he loves attention of any sort, he still rails at being pidgeon-holed as someone who's standards are out of touch. My biggest gripe with him, and reason I took up the banner against him awhile back, was his anti-women attitude displayed all the time. It's more subtle than the "I want to see the woman bleeding from her gape with massive splooge coming out of her eye socket" type anti-women porn fans but it's still there in spades. I don't cater to that kind of thinking (either type) and don't review for that crowd. Thanks for the input though.
