I was running norton 2003 without a problem, this was discountinued, so I got Norton 2010 this slowed my system to a standstill, I've also tried McAfee and the same happened. I'm now running AFG, this isn't as bad but still my pc is running about half the speed it used to!
I removed all traces of my old anti-virus programme, so I don't get whats going on??

See if Norton and/or McAfee offer a downloadable uninstaller on their websites. You may think that "all traces" of them are already gone, but they might not be.
I've just started using Microsoft's own anti-virus program, Microsoft Security Essentials. It seems to work fine, without the bog-down. It's free, as long as your copy of Windows is legit.

Norton 2003 was exceptional. Then just about everything they came out with after was junk. 2007 version was complete crap. Using McAfee through Verizon Fios. Not impressed with that either. What about kaspersky? I have a hard time trusting Microsoft. I will check it out though.
One of Microsoft's Updates was recognizing pictures I was emailing as malware, and screwed everything up. Not until recently did I manually download any of their updates. I still have about 40 Updates I have not downloaded because of my lack of trust in them not screwing my computer up.

I've switched again! This time to PC Tools anti-virus, the free verion! This found 12 threats that none of the others did and eliminated them, including a rogue anti-virus program called Data protection, that I knew was on my hard drive. My PC is running perfectly now and is back up to speed. Would highly recommend the PC Tools anti-virus!

I've used it and found it to be OK. It's not free, but you can sometimes get it for free or nearly free after rebates.
To me, that's just nuts. Whatever you think you're gaining by doing that is going to be far outweighed by leaving the vulnerabilities, etc. that those updates are written to take care of.

Nothing nutty about it. Especially when their updates stop me from doing my job, which entales sending pics. I manually select the downloads I need. I think it's nuts to allow Microsoft to put things on your PC with the notion that they will automatically be beneficial.
I deal (sell) on the internet all the time, and without their updates (I did use the automatic updates for years) I have not had any issue.

I had the same problem with Norton and that's why I'm using NOD32 as firewall and anti-virus. Works great and very light to use.
