The UK Government plans to make anyone aiming to view porn online prove that they are over 18 years of age through new requirements for website owners.
The new laws will see adult website owners forced to block anyone unable to provide proof that they are over the age of 18, in a bid to crack down on children viewing pornographic websites, The Sunday Times has reported.
The system is expected to be similar to one used abroad, with credit card details or official records being provided those visiting pornographic websites in order to gain access. Sites that fail to comply with the measures will be blocked.
A statement from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, said: “We are legislating to put R18 material that can only be sold in licensed sex shops behind access controls on video-on demand services.
“The same protections should apply online as offline and we are clarifying the law to make sure that is the case — we want the legislation to be in place by the end of the year. No decision has been made about offshore sites.”
The proposal would follow Prime Minister David Cameron’s introduction of web filters by internet providers to block access to unsuitable material, and combat online child pornography.

It's bullshit , it's another mean to shut down pornography without saying it.
If you buy a membership with a credit card you are of age , if you aren't but use a credit card from your father/mother you may as well use a copy of their ID.
There are credit cards suitable for minors but then give them a special code so that they won't be accepted by the sites.
The only other way to give proof of age is to provide a copy of your ID , nobody would like to give their ID and faces to a porn database.
They know as ANYBODY with a fraction of an ounce of brain that minors get their porn from illegal tubesites in which nobody gives a fuck about the age of the users.
Either they are completely retarded or they actually aim to do something else masking it with a perceived good reason

What's this "online child pornography" nonsense every government trots out as needed?
The real online child pornography, that I am aware of, exists between pedophiles and enablers sharing child pornography between themselves within a fairly shadowy network of clandestine sites.
Children don't access these sites...
Normal adults don't access these sites...
Hell, the government itself has great difficulty even locating these sites and the people involved.
In all my decades of porn and porn-related interests, I've never once -- not once -- encountered child pornography, or been served pop-up ads and/or email phishing, etc. trying to expose me to it.
These people, the "online child pornography" gang, want to remain in the shadows.
They don't want you to find them, for Christ's sake.
What governments want to do is to suppress legal adult consumption of adult materials through intimidation.
Would you give out your official personal information and/or credit card details to pornographic websites, information that will also be maintained and shared with your government?
This is insane.
And, make no mistake, your personal information will be used against you.

Not to mention build a database with people's personal sexual preferences which would be against the Constitution in many countries.
Of course if you have a database of web accesses to verify ages... well you'll have a database with personal sexual preferences anyway and with an ID attached

It sounds like they are interested in making tube sites verify the age of users or face being blocked. Pornhub is specifically mentioned as a site they are concerned about.

Let me get it straight they want some sites with ILLEGAL content to verify the age of users?
What about shut 'em down?
How about the law enforcement of this?
I mean are they seriously saying: We know you distribute stolen content which is illegal per se but we will leave you alone if you verify the age of your users so that you can continue as you please from abroad without paying a penny in taxes. (fuck off all those legal sites from which the content is stolen and who already verify the age of users and also pay taxes in kind)

wow does privacy even exist anymore? they should just get rid of that law. Do they think porn will help them catch the terrorists? lol. Fucking NSA and CIA are a joke. It's bad parenting if kids are watching porn and their responsibility. The government loves to attack porn but what about all the gambling websites?

The first step towards censorship, if they can make it workable. First they'll want everyone to prove they are 18, then they'll want to start banning any material they deem 'obscene'.

You're right Sir! The porn studios in Brazil have bankrupted because of the piracy; I don't want that to happen with the american studios too. Shutting down the tube sites would be a way much more effective to reduce the number of minors watching porn.

I guess the "system used abroad" might be the one used in Germany, where private companies are offering age verification services, and individual website operators then partner with their verification service(s) of choice. See e.g. Magmafilm's 18+ area for what that would look like.

This would be impossible to enforce. Kids are cleverer than most of us when it comes to technology and just like ISPs blocking file sharing torrent sites in the UK there are easy ways around these. Any kid with google can work this out - especially when you are a curious teenage boy with the reward of porn!
Let's be honest, this site encourages legal purchases of porn - which I support 100% to sustain the industry. Kids however don't have such spending power and will hunt for porn using other mediums i.e. tube sites or sites offering zero day links to popular file stores - how are they going to police these! If anything it will give parents a false sense of security.
Don't get me wrong I can see why the government are concerned and I agree they should be as in my day porn would be finding a magazine on my fathers wardrobe or a hidden VHS tape of 80s porn - porn is a different beast nowadays and much more harmful in terms of mixing reality with what we see on screen.
However I firmly believe that using technology to block porn is an easy way or excuse to hide the real issue - responsibility should rest with parents to protect kids from porn. Stop giving them iPhones at 13, they don't need them! Stop allowing them unmonitored access to the internet because you are too lazy or ignorant.

It sounds like something they'd do...
Then they'll start censoring and next busting people and ultimately ban it... Typical wanker move.

Shut down tube sites, make everyone wishing to view porn pay for it. So simple it's brilliant.

Adulttime.com's current Age Verify page as seen in Tejas.

I am of two minds about age verification. It's good to try to prevent childhood exposure to porn. However, requiring submission to a government site to view adult content rings a little bit intrusive.

I hope there is a data leak and we all find out that Greg Abbott visits "age-play" websites. I know he's a little creeper, I just don't have any proof.

I noticed several weeks ago thenude.com was giving me the age verification notice and there was no way to access the site, but today I can! I was waiting for IAFD and Indexxx to go down, that would be a disaster for me! Some of the tube sites are blocked, good riddance!

This looks similar to the law passed in Louisiana I think within the past year requiring viewers submit ID to a third party age verfication online service to access adult oriented sites. From what I heard, they only have to do this once and it stays in the system. As far as I knew, Louisiana was the only U.S. state with such a law and Porn Hub was the only site complying. However, more states might have copied this law and more sites might now be complying.

Apparently, it hasn't changed anything because I still try to get on Tushy and even after logging in with my UN and PW, I still get redirected to the VerifyAge site. Two ways to verify: take a picture of yourself or your ID. How incredibly dystopian and tyrannical. Those old "party of small government" republicans are full of shit.

I won't be doing it so I've cancelled any subscriptions that use that method (Tushy, DP Diva, etc) until common sense finally wins out and we can go back to some sort of sanity.

When we register be cam models, performers, etc., we also need to submit ID's and much more. Thus, it now seems like customers are having to the same increasingly more. With some sites, just submitting ID's isn't enough for performers. We also need to submit pictures of ourselves holding our IDs so they can get a better sense of whether that's actually us in the picture. I don't think customers are having to do that much. With one live cam site I'm on, I also had to submit a picture of myself holding a sign with my working name and the date.

Somebody connected to PinkLabel.tv in this thread or another. Well, they're no longer requesting age verification to enter from certain places. Now, they're not allowing access at all from such places because the legal risks can be too much: https://pinklabel.tv/on-demand/blocked-region/ The site says that if you're a subscriber in a place that passed laws too restrictive, then you can email them to request a refund. I went there to look into posting videos I create. So much for that. My sense is they may fear that even with age verification, they cannot guarantee that somebody who shouldn't be there will access the site and worry they may still get sued or shutdown.

If you wish to take action to change the laws: https://www.defendonlineprivacy.com/

Making sites give uo trying is the ultimate goal.

We have Republicans turning the U.S. into one of those countries with a restricted internet. Meanwhile, the folks who vote those Republicans into power think "free speech" just means being able to say slurs without social repercussions. Just dumb as hell.

I'm going to keep this fairly short. I could turn this into an op-ed, but I don't have the time ... Too much porn to watch ... that I paid for ... using my credit card ... since I'm an adult ...

I really can't believe this legislation in the UK has seen the light of day. I can appreciate that the DCMS has nothing better to do than submit legislation protecting snowflake UK kids from having unsatisfying sex lives in the future, but lets get real here. A lot of young people, young men in particular, are not having sex anyways. If you don't believe me, just google "How many people under 30 aren't having sex?".

I do want to see more young people be more sex positive, but is this really a priority for the UK government?? If they were really concerned about the wellbeing of children, maybe they could look at putting more resources in place to help with very serious mental health issues. Like how about focusing more on the skyrocketing rates of teen depression and suicide in the UK? I think educating teens about sex is important, but how does it measure up to people killing themselves?

If teens want to view sex on the internet, this legislation won't stop them. All it will take is one smart teen to learn how to switch a VPN from UK to USA (or Japan ... if they are into that sort of thing ...), and then (through the miracle of social media) they will all know.

Then there is the whole government knowing what kind of porn I watch ... yikes ...

In conclusion, focus less on control and focus more on mental health.

People keep bringing up Republicans, though it seems like this legislation to increase age verification receives bipartisan support: https://avn.com/business/articles/legal/two-more-ohio-lawmakers-introduce-age-verification-legislati As expected, increasingly more states are proposing and passing such laws. It can be very hard to speak out against this from a political perspective. I imagine any politician who opposes stricter age verification can be accused of supporting minors accessing adult sites or at least not caring- and who wants to be accused of that.

^With the rate at which this type of legistation is spreading across U.S. states, I wouldn't be suprised if it get proposed at the national level and passes. With the right to privacy argument on one side vs. protect the children argument on the other, the latter is almost certain to win, even if it's not mainly about protecting children beyond the surface.

Sure, the idea is simple, yet is achieving it? Also, the tube sites can benefit performers in some ways because they can create their own content on their territory based on what they wish to do without having to rely on studios and the added problems or dangers that can go along with that. Plus, performers cannot make studios give them work and models without the mainstream porn standards of beauty or who aren't the biggest stars may have a harder time finding work with studios (though I realize there are exceptions), or may only find work so restricted that they're pressured into doing stuff they're unsafe with or don't wish to do if they're restricted just to studio porn. Though I realize there are performers who complain about tube sites and the risk of piracy is a valid concern, the issues are more nuanced than people seem to realize when it comes to tube sites.

Does it really? Which leftist politicians (haha, in my dreams) and which leftist organizations?

This isn't exactly grassroots action lol

This is coming from places like Ye Olde Texas Government, which is constantly involved in some kind of backwards shit in recent history. You know if there is some kind of fascist action happening in the U.S. in the current decade, it is driven by Texas and/or Florida, mainly because their top politicos want to be celebrities known for being the most religiously right. At least we can take pleasure in knowing neither of the legless or charismaless clowns will be president.

"Radical feminists" (as they're commonly called) are very anti-porn, yet they're leftist on various issues. However, they're aligned with the religious right when it comes to porn, which has been nicknamed the unholy alliance. Yet, there's more than one feminist perspective on pornography and I'm just referring to a certain segment of feminism.

That's speculation on my part. A proposal was introduced in the senate by an independent senator. A quick Google search didn't reveal her leanings. But further reading indicates that the governing party didn't support this idea and that party leans left, so the senator may be right-leaning. I get that this issue is almost exclusively a right-wing issue in the US. As Tessa says, these laws are sold as protecting children, but no one believes that. It's control. Their Jesus doesn't want you watching 'dirty movies.'

Yes. Censorship and Restriction of content are part of the equation. And furthering a Christofascist agenda and ideology. But it's also about surveillance and eliminating the right to privacy.
It won't stop at porn or LGBTQ issues, either.

If legislators honestly wanted to prevent minors from seeing porn, they'd be fighting against piracy. But they're not. It's crickets on the issue.
