As part of the transition to a new site design, I'm working on a new Private Message system. I'm creating it from scratch. The existing PM system has too many issues that I don't feel like addressing. And it's simply cumbersome to use (to put it very nicely).

The new Conversations system will work a lot more like Facebook's messaging features. It will support group conversations when launched in the framework of the current site. Think of it like a private topics system with all of the features of the forum (tweets, images, links, etc.) When we launch the new site design conversations can be a topic-like view or a live chat type of view.

I do not plan to convert the existing PM system messages to the new system. So if you have anything important saved in your inbox or sent items in the existing PM system you should think about saving that info to somewhere else. I will transfer your settings and ignored users to the new system. I will leave the old PM system online for 6 months after it closes so people that don't visit the site often have a chance to access any info they have there. After it's closed you won't be able to send or receive any messages through the old system, it is only temporary archive. After 6 months or so I'll delete all the data.

I expect to launch the new PM system sometime next weekend, February 16th/17th-ish.

^ Hello. The idea looks cool and I think everyone will be happy of a new PM with modern techno features on this site. However, I don't think it's a good idea not to move existing conversations to the new format. Some forum users have conversations and discussions with adult talents, movie directors/producers...etc that they will be keen to keep for future reference.

Thank you for the feedback. The decision to not transfer existing messages to the new system was not made without careful consideration. This is a decision that was made jointly by the owners and moderators. It's not just me being lazy. I'm the only programmer for the site and my time is limited. It's not a trivial task to move the message data into the new format. Sorry if my post above makes it seem like we hadn't considered transferring the old data into the new system.

I think having a 6 month period where the old messages are available as an archive is more than sufficient for members to save into their own private documents.

Just offer a little bit of an explanation about why a conversion from old to new isn't trivial: The old system is structured in the database like an email discussion. Two copies of of every message exist (for the sender and recipient.) This allowed for messages to be deleted by one side without deleting for the other person. When you're in an email conversation you don't really know what's going on in the other person's mailbox.

The new system is more like a forum topic. There's one copy of a message that all participants in the private discussion can see. In the new system there's no equivalent to a 'delete message' like in the old system. The new system will allow someone to leave a conversation. If all of the participants in the conversation subsequently leave it (or are banned) the conversation will automatically be purged from the database. Leaving a conversation means it won't appear in your message list but the other participants can continue the conversation.

Trying to convert an email-like message system into a topic-like system will be very confusing. I think people might be surprised if conversations that they thought they deleted suddenly reappeared because the other party didn't delete their side of the discussion.

I plan to put up a demo version of the new conversations system sometime tomorrow. People can kick the tires with it over the weekend and if all goes well I'll make it the active messaging system early next week.
When I make the switch I'll disable the ability to send any messages through the old system.

If your're curious feel free to play with the demo This is not fully integrated with the site yet. No notifications will be sent out and the recipients need to visit the Conversations page to use the new system.

Any messages sent during this demo period will be purged before making the new system live early next week.

yea need some popuop/alert/color change whenever a new message arrives. this old system doesnt tell you unless you look at the top.

The new stuff isn't fully integrated with the site yet. Like Flash indicated, this is just a sandbox/testing/demo version to flush out any bugs or issues. I'll fix the known bugs early next week and then fully integrate the new PM system with the rest of the site, including visible notifications and email notifications. I'll also include a mechanism to get to the old system for people that need to fetch their messages there.

The new message system is now live in the forum. I'm still working on adding it to the price search and reviews area of the site. Email notifications for new messages will be implemented in the morning.

The new Private Conversations system works a lot like the forum. You can Start a Group Conversation by searching for forum member's names and adding them to the list. Up to 10 people per private conversation. You can use all of the same features available in the forum including tweets and images. There is no limit to the number of messages in a private conversation.

The person that starts the conversation determines the members in the group. At this time it's not possible to add more people to an existing conversation. I might add that feature in the future if it seems to be needed.

The person that starts the conversation can lock/close it.

Anyone can leave a conversation at any time. (If you leave a conversation, you're gone and can't come back to the conversation.) When all members have left a conversation the messages are deleted from the database. Any images that were uploaded as part of a private conversation that has no active members will be deleted as well in a weekly cleanup process.

If someone messages you and you never want to hear from them again there's an "Ignore User" icon you can click to add them to you your ignored users list.

If you want to receive email notifications of new private conversation messages select the appropriate checkbox in your conversation settings page.

If you don't visit the forum for 30 days we'll automatically disable sending you email notifications for new messages. You can come back and change it if you want to start receiving them again.

I sent out some messages last night before the new system went live. Will the members see those messages or should I resend them using the new system?

The messages will be in their old inboxes and they would have received an email pointing to the old system too. However, they will not see a "new messages" indicator for old, unread messages in the top right area in the page header. So they might not see them when they visit the site again.

When I was going to send a message in the new system there is a bar to include the Subject but there is no bar to include who you want to send a message to.

I figured it out, nevermind.
