I was thinking about STT as I was reading various sex toy review blogs on the net. There seems to be a cottage industry of people (mostly women) reviewing things and putting them on blogs, tweating contests, and so forth. A lot of what they're doing boils down to the same thing: being a click-through portal to Babeland or Good Vibrations or whatever retailer is supplying them with stuff to test (and hopefully rave about). Where it really diverges from STT, and this is something worth thinking about, is that the blog authors develop their own personalities, whereas STT is a collection of reviews. It's the difference between a collection of movie reviews from people you don't know and never heard of vs. a review by Roger Ebert. Over time, there's a connection made with whether you trust the reviewer or share the same tastes. Some of the reviewers are more candid about their reviews, or get into non-review-related personal stuff, so a reader may make a more personal connection with a reviewer and keep reading the site and reviews even if it's stuff the reader ordinarily wouldn't care about.

jayo - thanks for your thoughtful feedback. I agree completely. We would have to create profiles/blogs to go along with the reviews so the reviewers can develop their own personalities and audiences. Or do a better job tying it into the forum here so the reviews lead to a discussion. Drew and I have been working on programming priorities. Not an easy task 'cause there is so much we want to do.
Absolutely. I figured it was throwing another onto the giant pile of work. But it's fun to ruminate about this stuff, and my friends IRL have no interest in it.

^ we were all doing "social networking" before it had a name. It was Asia Carrera who first laid out the importance of personality on a website for me. I learned a lot watching her develop her site. Tying in product sales with the social/community aspect of the web is an interesting challenge. The big guys are still making their money in advertising.
