The shopping forum has been slowly deteriorating into little more than a place for people to vent their frustrations. Two of our primary goals with Adult DVD Talk are 1) to provide good channels of communication between consumers, retailers and studios and 2) to help keep each other informed about the good, the bad and the ugly of Adult DVDs. I'm not sure why the shopping forum has developed into a soapbox of sorts but it has. Our forthcoming policy is not a direct result of any single instance or thread, it's more of an effort to get things back on track.

The retailers represented on this site work very hard to develop a reputation for providing quality service. Many posts made in this forum can be extremely damaging at times and are sometimes made with no basis whatsoever. We want to avoid this situation.

I don't have a policy set in stone just yet. I do have a couple ideas that will be incorporated into a complaint policy in one way or another.

If a forum member is going to complain about the mis-handling of their order(s) they will be required to provide the following information in their post or their post will be deleted.

1) Include any order numbers related to their complaint. We will require an order number to enable a store's customer service staff to associate a user's forum profile with their real name and any open customer service issues. Too many complaints are posted here in the forum that provide no means for a retailer to directly contact a customer based solely on their forum post. We do not share the email addresses associated with your forum profiles with anyone. If your email address is hidden then a retailer really has no way of knowing who made teh complaint.

2) Date, time and method of contact. Anyone posting a complaint will be required to state when and how they attempted to notify the retailer of their problem. We don't want people posting complaints here in the forum without first providing the retailer ample oppurtunity to address the issue. There will be some minimum time requirement as a guideline.

Of course there will be complaints that aren't order-specific. Those issues will be exempt from these requirments.

I'm sure some folks are going to immediately start waving the 'censorship' flag. That's fine, they can post somewhere else. We run a moderated forum, not a public newsgroup.

I'm open to feedback as we work towards ways of salvaging what was once one of the best forums on ADT.

I may not have been a forum member for as long as some, but I do think that this forum has deteriorated somewhat.

All the forums were on a downslide a while ago, but recently it has gotten much better, mainly due to the getting rid of problem starters.

I thought that this forum, the shopping forum, was supposed to be a resource for problems that need solving, upcoming deals and coupons, and for interaction with the stores. But like you said, it has gone down hill a bit, with people having one bad experience and automatically condemning a retailer. This may be the internet, but there are people who work at these stores, they can make mistakes, it's human.

So I agree with all that was said by Drew, and think it is a great idea, maybe a little overdue, to reopen the civilized talk.

Sounds like a pretty good idea, Drew. The order number is a nice way to let the retailer know where the complaint is coming from and also authenticates the complaint.

Although this forum has gone down a bit lately, I do see it coming back up. People are voicing positive experiences again, and there aren't so many posts responding to problems with "Yeah, company X sucks so I use company Y", which I think shows a lot of hope.

I'll be in the chat room tonight around 10:15 eastern time if anyone wants to toss some ideas around on this.

I think that this is a HORRIBLE idea....just kidding.

I think that the whole key to making this work is Drew's second bullet point regarding allowing the store to have sufficient time to correct a problem.

I think that it would also be a good idea to either have the forum rules or a link to the rules displayed somewhere prominently on the screen within each forum (maybe as a locked thread that always stays at the top of the list of threads). This could eliminate some of the "I didn't know the rules" problems.

This methodology would also be helpful because new members would all see it. It seems that many of the people posting the "Company X sucks" messages have not been here long. There is no reason to believe that as newer people continue to join that they won't be posting the same types of threade if the rules are not prominently shown.

Drew Black - Fully agree with you. The problem is, that people always post topics if the have had bad experiences with a retailer. I mean mostly there's one guy in thousands with problems. I have so many good experiences with retailers like Fivestar , Lasersedge and EroDVD that it's impossible to start a topic for each time the helped me with reshipping or something else.

So guys be fair and give the retailers time to solve your problems

I'll be looking into a way to create "sticky" threads that stay at the top of the forum list sometime later today.

Better sticky than slimey.

The same should apply to praise. This would differentiate "true" claims of good service from shills. Otherwise, this can only be to the retailers advantage. I have seen planted praise on other forums; so bad, that the credibility of the forum dropped to zero.

PS - Actually, this kind of rigour for complaints and/or praise may not be necessary. I think that most of us are able to distinguish between reasonable from unreasonable complaints. Still, this may be a good policy, if the desired effect is to get communication between the customer and the retailer.

But if you want to hear a story about how I got screwed... LOL ;)

PPS -- First Post by the Way! I joined this forum because I wanted to participate in the merchant feedback section. So I will be watching this thread with interest.

Drew,
Did you intentionally "un-sticky" this thread?

Yep. I'll be posting the rules soon so I figured I could let this thread drop down.
