I've been working on the new site pretty much non-stop for the past few months. At the moment I'm completely redoing the advanced search feature of the movie database. I'll think I'll do something similar for reviews and eventually for the forum too.

The goal is to allow the user to do much of the filtering before the search results are displayed. Additional filtering by studio and category will happen on the results page. Before I get too far with this I want to be sure it's intuitive. I'm not ready to open the site up for users yet so these screen grabs will need to give you an idea for now.

You can combine any combination of title, performer and director.

Is this approach intuitive for a user? I don't want to go too far down this path if it is terribly confusing.

Looks pretty good to me. I do like the drop-down list of suggestions, after a few characters have been typed, ala Google.

One suggestion. Would it be possible to include an OR operator in the search boxes? Such as "anal OR oral". Usually such an operator is indicated with the pipe ('|') symbol, i.e., "anal | oral". I realize that this may add a layer of extra complexity that you may feel isn't worth devoting the effort to. Just tossing out ideas.

Am I correct in thinking that typing multiple, space-separated words implies an "AND" operator? For example "anal oral" means "anal AND oral".

Nope. "anal oral' would mean "match all titles that have 'anal oral' in them. The title field is just a substring match on the movie title.

Additional filters for things like studios/categories will be on the right sidebar of the page much like the current site functionality just with a different layout.

The search results pages will be very similar to the browse pages, which happen to look like this:
(desktop)

mobile version is better as a video.

"OR" logic is cumbersome to implement. Show all movies from Angela White OR Erik Everhard doesn't seem like a very useful search to me. Show all movies with "anal" OR "oral" in the movie title seems like it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I think maybe my title text demos appear to be keyword based because I used things like "fashion" as a substring of "Fashionistas". "asshole" and Erik Everhard would return all of the movies he's in that have the string "asshole" in the title. Not all of the movies where he's an asshole.

The new advance search results pages will have user-friendly URLs that you can easily bookmark to pull up the results anytime.

This will give you a better idea than the video above.

It's almost done. Still need to implement a new process for submitting reviews and tidy up some design elements and the structure of a few pages. This beta version of the new site is using live data. So if you use the new image uploader there those files will be available for use in the forum. There's a new avatar uploader page too.

Hoping to have it all completed soon. Likely within the next couple of weeks.
