Well I am generally into hard core porn but made a recent discovery called "Marie and Jack, a Hardcore Love Story." I feel that this movie is the perfect icebreaker into porn because there is nothing offensive in any way about it and it opens up discussion as to what your partner wants to see.
Most people recommend feature videos from companies like Wicked or Vivid. But for a "first time" film that might not be the right choice. If it is not what they are expecting they can be turned off from adult films altogether. Especially after renting 4 or more films that don't appeal to them. Just a personal observation. Picking adult films can be harder than picking a pair of shoes !!
I understand what you are saying ES, but even VCA and Wicked have some features that are pretty tame. Maybe even some of Andrew Blake's earlier stuff "Les Femmes Erotique", "Sensual Exposure", " Secrets", would be good. How about some of the classic 80's porn. Swedish Erotica...Seka. That sorta of stuff would be good to start off with IMHO.
Ah Yes, but who says tame is what people want? That is a natural assumption for couples porn or first time porn. I know of a girl who watched a "tame" porn that was recommended by somebody and she told me she never wanted to see another one because it was boring and stupid. Well Barrybrn, I'm not sure what you're into but Marie and Jack is definately well made. It is a documentary, with explicit action. But nothing over the top. I watched the whole thing without hitting the fast forward then played around with the angles. It is a fun DVD, I'm not sure if I would recommend the VHS version.

Aside from higher level production values (good photography, crisp editing) what I believe is very different about Marie and Jack is that it presents these sex acts in the context of a compelling and believable emotional relationship. The advent of digital video has been benificial in that it's torn down the barrier to entry in filmmaking and openned the field to a lot of new voices. No one has benefitted from this more than me. However, it's also taken my industry through a terrible cycle of "I can do cheaper". The only reason I've survived is because I've tried to move up (shooting on film) while the industry as a whole has been moving down (video, then DV, etc.)
Porn most especially has suffered from this. Every day people enter the business with new ideas on how to make video by spending less money. The simple fact is it's less costly to find women who will take two dicks up their asses than it is to shoot professional format video cameras, let alone film.
But there are some signs we might be nearing the end of this. There are a few directors who post to ADT who seem to realize there can be more to making a sex film than simply rolling tape while people who are paid to fuck go through the motions. They seem to be passionately commited to bringing a personal point of view to their work, and to holding themselves to higher standards than either the audience or the industry is yet ready to reward.
