I feel like if you look at the studios that get performers to sign longterm contracts with, the familiar compliment given by the talent is how they are treated by said studios like VMG and Brazzers. Surprisingly, it appears like a majority of the studios have not caught on to this and while the talent may not be getting mistreated exactly - they are not being given much of an artistic license to create porn that is as fulfilling for them as it is for their fans. That's my theory as to why there's so much burnout and sudden retirements like Laney Grey & Scarlett Sage among others who either go the OF route or into camming. Top question that isn't being asked is why are a growing number of people finding less and less fulfillment in studio porn? Studio porn scenes are not an endangered thing yet BUT I suspect there's going to be a need for an evolutionary shift where creators are going to control and dictate the types of scenes being put out rather than directors and studio executives. One thing that would do wonders to help studios is to avoid what I call 'assembly line' porn scenes where it feels like every scene is the same with little to no real variation. That is part of what took the shine off of GFF, SHV, Girlsway among others. It just all started to blend together rather than a studio embracing a signature look and feel that made them stand out from a crowd. Looking at taboo scenes; you can't tell me that there's not enough controversial shit going on in the news that porn isn't able to find inspiration from to replace the abused fauxcest model, that is going to be what keeps pornstars around. It's not a coincidence that when Casey Calvert steps up to direct, everyone is jockeying to be on her set and get involved. Same frenzy happened when Axel Braun announced a new production or Ricky Greenwood gets cooking. I agree with the complaints about scene length because what drew me to GFF was the slow burning foreplay that didn't take forever to get to the action but still somehow made 40 mins feel like 20 at best. Don't get me started on mediocre performers or the ones that haven't figured out how to walk that fine line between performative, visually satisfying porn scenes and those that feel raw, authentic with the arousal/excitement palpable through each frame. I would say on the male side of things, the story is grimmer because there's not alot of male performers who show any hope of being the next Tommy Pistol, having the anal talent of Mick Blue, being as believable yet solid as the likes of Tyler Nixon, Jessy Jones, Lucas Frost, Logan Pierce, Small Hands or Nathan Bronson. If I got a $100 for every BG scene that didn't look and feel like mechanical pounding, I would be in my 80s before I hit a million dollars. What's going to end up strangling the industry is rampant piracy but much like mainstream movies, people at the studios don't seem to recognize if you want people to pay to watch - you have to give them something worth spending their money on. You can't just simply recycle old shit and then wonder why more fans are not rushing to sign up.
I agree with almost all of your points, except your take on Casey Calvert as a director and your views on previous GFF productions. At the moment, I'm not really sure what direction Casey is trying to take with her productions. Based on the trailers, I'm struggling to understand her creative vision. Her last movie, Straight Girls, generated a lot of hype on social media from a marketing standpoint, but after watching the trailer, I wasn't as impressed. The entire film looked visually very dark, and it felt like Ophelia Fae dominated almost every scene. On top of that, there were two scenes featuring the same pairing with Ameena Green, which made the lineup feel repetitive rather than diverse. That's just my personal opinion, but I expected something more unique from the project. As for the previous GFF productions, I think the reality is both true and bitter. We now live in a world where people consume YouTube Shorts and other short-form content, while many creators focus on OnlyFans, where every minute of content comes at a price. I don't think today's audience has the same patience for slow-burning, seduction-driven scenes as they once did. Times have changed, and we have to accept that. Otherwise, we'll spend all our time complaining about what used to be instead of appreciating what's being made today.

Apparently you have not been paying attention to threads on ADT that highlight a growing disenchantment: I Think Brazzers Fell Off Hard, The Downfall of Evil Angel, The Mike Adriano thread is shutdown permanently due to endless complaints so clearly plenty of other fans are less than satisfied with the scenes being cranked out. Enough fans decide to not accept and pay for the scenes being produced, suddenly studios end up hemmorhaging in the profit department. There's a series of horror themed scenes with teeth in a vagina; how that is supposed to garner more fans is beyond me unless there's a silent majority that finds castration with teeth instead of surgery to be a turn on. You may not like what Casey Calvert produces but the talent loves it and that counts for more than your appreciation. Diversity in porn is increasingly impossible to find because despite having the internet at their fingertips, there's still too many newbies who either think this is a get rich quick industry, lack the intelligence and psychological stamina for the job in the long run or those who become disillusioned with the volume of piracy at work. It used to be out of say 20 newbies: 12 would make it past the 2-4 year mark, 8 or 9 would become veterans within the 7-10 mark with 6 making it to pornstar status. Now you're lucky if out of every 15 newbies, you get maybe four who actually have the drive and love for the business to make it to the pornstar level. The remaining eleven? Six will be gone by the 4 year mark if not before, the remaining five will have a run as veterans and retire either when or before they hit the seven year mark. There's a growing section of fans who are increasingly less impressed with every new offering and that doesn't exactly bode well for a majority of the studios still in business. I would also add that diversity among male performers is going to be increasingly harder to come by because new male talent takes a LONG time to get the veteran stripes, to get to the point where you can put them with almost anyone and have them put on a solid five star performance. The new male talents that I've seen lack the confidence to have the presence of the older veterans which is a shame because that confidence improves a scene by leaps and bounds. Studios and agencies would be advised to have like a porn boot camp to cultivate young male talent that can perform at the level of a Tyler Nixon or a Nathan Bronson or even Juan El Caballo Loco.

^The people on these forums criticize for the sake of criticizing. They've become criticism machines. As Mike Quasar rightly said a few days ago, no matter what he shoots, people will always find something to complain about. The truth is, we've reached a point where we're never satisfied. We keep saying we want something different, but half the time we don't even know what we actually want. What many people also fail to understand is that the industry has now split into two different worlds: independent creator-owned websites and traditional studio productions. Creator-owned platforms give performers complete creative freedom to shoot the kind of scenes they want. They also earn significantly more-sometimes from a 5-10 minute video than they would from traveling to a studio, following a director's vision, and spending an entire day filming. On top of that, much of this content is behind paywalls, making it harder to pirate than traditional studio releases. Take Dharma Jones, for example. She focuses far more on her OnlyFans content than on studio shoots, and she has openly said that she enjoys creating content on her own platform more. Many performers are following the same path because it offers greater creative control, flexibility, and better financial rewards. As for niche fetishes or taboo content, there is clearly an audience willing to buy it directly from creators. However, that doesn't necessarily mean those same customers are willing to pay studios for similar scenes, even though multiple-site subscription services have made studio content more accessible than ever. For me, several studios are still producing excellent content. Unfortunately, many fans keep comparing every new release to the so-called "golden era" and expect the past to magically return. Instead of appreciating what is being made today, they judge everything through nostalgia and end up criticizing almost every release. You can't drive forward while staring only at the rear-view mirror.
^ I'd argue many fans don't expect the golden age (whenever that was) to ever return. They see porn is continually evolving into the post studio era. They don't like it; the criticism you reference is frustration.

The issue with today's studio porn is similar to the issue with mainstream movies and tv shows; it's mostly recycling with very little effort being exerted. Nostalgia's not the problem, the problem is every studio imitates someone else rather than creating their own signature style and that is why the VMG is the ultimate heavyweight. Nobody comes close to their uncompromising vision that people respect far more than other studios mentioned. Yes they may have constructive criticism but few people are trashing the entire brand. Because VMG is the tip of the sword, the edge of the blade of innovation in the industry right alongside the likes of PureTaboo. You want an example of putting a new twist on an old favorite? The Parent-Teacher Trap completely flips the whole student teacher dynamic and gives it a darker twist which is brilliant. Consider Crash 1/2 courtesy of AHL where Kristen Scott sets up Scarlett Sage for a crash, outs her as a pornstar in the scene and sets up the perfect trap through seduction along with blackmail in which Scarlett is forced to surrender to being hers. GW, AGM, Mommysgirl and even AdultTime have all put out fantastic scenes with that I come back regularly to: Holy Matrimony Loose Threads with Kayley Gunner and Vicki Chase, Private Dancer with Alison Rey and the late Alana Cruise, Seeing Red Not You Again with Vanna Bardot and Lacy Lennon. 20th Reunion is great example of a good scene because it features a twist on infidelity; after Sinn Sage ends up cheating on her wife played by Rachael Cavalli with the incredible Penny Barber, Rachael turns the tables by fucking Sinn in Penny's house while she's in the shower with the twist being that when Penny comes and finds them, instead of the usual angry confrontation - she asks if there's room for one more in there. Absolutely brilliant, Seduced by the Sitter with Rachael Cavalli and Reese Robbins is another fun romp. And even Twistys shows moments of genius in Serviced In Her Room with Scarlit Scandal and Chanel Camryn alongside Layover with Anna Claire Clouds and Chloe Surreal. I don't feel most of the forum involves endless criticism nearly as much as it indicates an obsession with the mythical 'next perfect scene' which completely undermines the current ones out there and devalues veterans with length bodies of work in the industry. The future of porn is going to be creator owned rather than studio driven and in my opinion, if you're a porn studio - now is the time to start taking action to encourage the talent to want to stay rather than go. I suspect one of the reasons why so many performers end up retiring from studio porn is because they are tired of being pidgeonholed, tired of being forced into endless repetitive roles instead of more innovative ones that allow them to flex. Is the answer to tie yourself as studio into knots trying to please everyone? No, but you do have to listen to the fans to a degree and it pays to keep things fresh and interesting. If you look at VMG showcases from Abigail Mac's to Psychosexual with Gianna Dior to Influence with Emily Willis, they are as different as night and day. Each one having its own erotic identity rather than falling into familiar pitfalls. I agree that fans see the post studio era of porn coming up faster than expected and that is part of what drives the criticism born of that frustration
I am now very glad that stars and directors don't read this forum too often. If they did, they'd probably have to shut down their studios the very next day and never come back. Now I really support Mike Quasar's statement: "I will make what I love." That's his style. Meanwhile, people can keep growing their criticism as much as they want in the name of frustration, searching for a "masterpiece" in every single scene, and constantly comparing everything to old directors' storytelling... and so on.

I never criticized Quasar for the record and I believe either on his Instagram or on his Twitter at one point - he described himself a pornographer patiently waiting to be cancelled. That suggests he is aware of a seismic shift in studio porn as we know it coming sooner or later; I think one of the reasons why there's so much frustration about fauxcest among other gimmicks is that there's a tendency to build the scene around the gimmick rather than having a great scene that seamlessly incorporates the gimmick without it being in your face so to speak. SHV is really good at this whether it's with Strapon Bosses or Wet Panties Trib, both being under the Lesbian Adventures titles; what makes these scenes work so well is that the scene is conceived and the gimmick being a natural progression. That Parent Teacher Trap scene I mentioned with Kendra James is a brilliant way of refreshing an abused gimmick by giving it a darker edge & an anything but 'happy' ending. Movie Night with Theodora Day and Melody Marks is another grand example of how to make the fauxcest gimmick work by putting in the background where the real focus is on avoiding getting caught by a sleeping stepmom a few feet away. Kenna James and Serena Blair playing as opposing sisters who go back and forth over the course of three or four scenes with the decision to finally take the plunge and be a couple once again flips the fuaxcest gimmick by confining it to the background rather than the foreground.
That's a bit of an exaggeration, plenty of stars still on this site like Casey and Cherie among others. What drives people away is going against the forum rules which involve personal attacks upon performers or directors which I avoid doing unlike some people. I will say this though - if you're making a product for consumption by the general public whether it is music or movies or food and drink or even porn; if you can't take any kind of criticism, you're in the wrong business and should leave immediately. Nobody gets into entertainment expecting everyone to love their work, mainstream actors and actresses deal with negative reviews, bad press, unhappy fans etc all the time and they keep on trucking. It's part of show businesses and there's no getting away from that unless future involves porn studious on the Moon or maybe Mars, far away from human civilization.

This whole forum has turned into an over-criticism machine. Every thread feels the same-hardly any appreciation, just constant negativity. If you don't like a scene or a movie, simply don't watch it. What's even more surprising is that people have started criticizing titles of the movie without even watching the movie. Just... wow. Come on, people!
Of what I've seen so far this year, performers are becoming more confident and comfortable in front of the camera. Take Leana Lovings, Addison Vodka, Isa Bella, Lilly Bell, and even Octavia Red. When they first entered the industry, I never imagined they'd grow into such impressive performers. Maddison Wilde and Scarlett Moon are carving out their own space and leaving a lasting impact. I recently watched a scene featuring Agatha Vega on Bellesa Plus with Christian Clay, and it was an absolute knockout. Their chemistry was electric, and the performance really stood out. There are so many performers in the industry today who genuinely seem determined to stay, improve, and keep raising the bar. To me, this doesn't feel like a decline at all-it feels like the beginning of a new era, with an exciting wave of talent ready to deliver even more memorable performances. I never doubted that Octavia, Leana, Addison, Lilly Bell and Charlotte Sins would make it as pornstars because they have a fantastic level of awareness that many newcomers don't. That's the difference between the veterans/legends and everyone else; they do the research, prepare themselves accordingly both physically and psychologically speaking for the business. I'm sorry if you feel the forum has become too negative but no forum for discussing anything is going to be 100% positivity, people are allowed to feel how they want and voice it. What's interesting about you is that you lump me in with everyone else even though if you looked through many of the threads I've commented in, I've usually been the one defending adult performers and encouraging people to be kinder with their criticism so it doesn't feel nearly as much like a direct attack. Anyone from chefs to musicians to comedians to bartenders is going to get feedback and criticism, it's impossible to get away from. The trick is separating the critique(the helpful feedback) from the general criticism which can be useless. I'm not one of those hounds who is demanding a performer with 500 scenes spend every hour of every day churning out more.
I don't feel like the future is bleak as there will always be new talent along with rising stars but there are certain people who are in a class by themselves. Call them the unicorns of porn or the phenoms who become known as legendary pornstars: Angela White, Cherie DeVille, Adriana Chechik, Cherry Kiss, Alexis Fawx, Syren De Mer, Cory Chase, Abella Danger, Dee Williams on the female side and on the male side - Rocco, Mick Blue & Manuel Ferrera. I'll put this in respectful perspective, both Vanessa Carlton and Charlie Puth are both good pianists with solid careers. Do you think there will ever come a day where their musical catalog will carry the same impact of say Sir Elton John and Billy Joel? No, because those two men are a different class of performer that resonates with everyone. Almost nobody will say that their bodies of work are anything less than incredible due to quality and longevity. Same principle applies to porn; it is incredibly rare to find someone in this business who is not only successful and in high demand but find themselves loving meeting that demand along with their own fantasies leading to a career that goes for 10-15 years. I'm allowed to miss that, I would even argue many performers I enjoy have only gotten better in their scenes with age and experience.

thanks very much for the kind words about me. I find this discourse quite interesting as a performer myself. I think that one thing is that the porn/industry has changed a lot over the years. I also very much feel like I am not given the opportunity often to showcase myself in the correct way, despite the push and desire to do that. I haven't shot as much gonzo as I would like, and still have not had the chance to work for some studios that I think I would be able to do that with. Therefore, I believe that makes it a bit harder to put myself in a different spot. The porn I watched for years was that style, and what I admire from my favorite older performers. Circling back to someone else's comment about OF takeover, personally I have had an OF since I started studio work. I enjoy doing both. I am sort of now at the point where I feel like I get the chance to do what I excel at and enjoy (some good ol hardcore fucking) almost only in my content. I always like to say if I had joined porn in 2010 I think things would be different haha. Regardless, the passion for porn will never leave me ;)
^Sadly I think we've seen the peak of gonzo. You've shot for some of these studios so no need to comment specifically on them, but HardX has biweekly releases when they used to have one every 4 days. The locations are basic and repetitive, the color palette is orange and ugly, the cameras are better but the lens makes for a lot of negative space and crisp quality doesn't suit these scenes anyway. Elegant Angel has been a shell of its former self without Mason, as every scene is ultra bright and basic, and JJ drops a lot in quality if it isn't Jules himself directing. I guess Brazzers does gonzo as well but their scenes are a joke, literally.
Maybe it gets better at some point, but right now it's looking bleak.

I don't think many ordinary people know how to review anything from mainstream films, music/albums, stage shows and plays (if that's your thing). Quite commonly any of them is given 0 or 1 out 10 for no good reason. So it's not something that is restricted to porn. Though few other mediums have a community like we have here, where fans can provide feedback and share their thoughts, appreciation. What makes it even more unusual is professionals in the industry are, or have been part of it. That has it's downsides as some comments could take offence or things to heart. I was amazed when I read Viv Thomas respond to the forum in LezLoveVideo (it was long after the fact to a person complaining Intimacy: A Lesbian Affair (Viv Thomas, 2013) was a waste of money because it was "only 3 scenes."), haha, here it's common to have comments or replies. Talking about LezLoveVideo forums, another person stated (paraphrasing) "I don't know what's so great about Mike Quasar... does nothing for me" I found it quite funny, since the person obviously didn't know what they were talking about.
If I didn't like something because of personal taste I would never review it. Straw man arguments are always invalid.

It reminded me of something I saw in New Sensations, introducing Aidra Fox. She was saying she liked hard, rough sex. The harder the better... then the scene had her continue in a lesbian three-some. I wonder whether performers read reviews. I suppose a review of one of their scenes isn't very common, more often I guess it'd be a couple of sentences in the comments section. As eloquent as they might be: a line of heart emojis, etc,. In mainstream I've heard that it runs the whole gamut from avoiding every single comment to reading everything that's written about them (in the normal media, not social media), or somewhere in the middle (maybe read somebody they trust/respect). Some might even flush it from mind and move on: Jeremy Strong (Kendall Roy in Succession (2018-2023)) made moving on a physical act by throwing away or otherwise destroying the script, thus expunging it.
What's it with the Parasited!? Get good performers then wack make-up on them and have them act deranged so they appear gross as anything. Is there a demand for monster porn?! Jesus Christ, do I ever agree with you on this! I was sorting through a large number of scenes I have from Max Hardcore to put them in folders by movie title. Max had probably several hundred movies so this was no easy task. I had the files identified by model so I used IAFD to help me figure out which scenes went in which movie folders. In some cases it was easy, especially where there was a link to a VOD site so I could see thumbnails of the scenes. But a lot of Max's movies are no longer available on VOD sites so I then had to rely on user-posted reviews. I acknowledge that most of these reviews were written over two decades ago, but that doesn't excuse them for being so terrible. In most cases the reviews were useless. Admittedly, I was looking for information to identify the scene so any description of the set or the model's clothes would be useful. But review after review by the same reviewers was along the lines of "I didn't like this movie because it is crappy. The end." Or the opposite that they liked it because they liked it. Why??? (I'm exaggerating, but not by much.)
I've been writing porn site reviews for probably over 20 years now, with the last five or so being a paid gig. I know what I want to read in a review so that's what I write. If anything, I probably give too much detail. I stay objective. My thought is that a reader can visit the site and determine if that's what he or she likes. I'm going to give them objective information on the site itself. Yes, I'll comment on the technical bits of the scenes too, such as lighting, sound, editing, etc., but that's still objective. I prefer younger petite models so a review of a BBW site shouldn't be "I don't like BBW models so this site sucks and I wouldn't recommend it."
To your point about mainstream films, etc., I think you'd agree that a mainstream film/album/etc. review and a porn site review are quite different. The site review is going to be more technical. Since I'm not reviewing individual scenes, I'm not talking about character or plot development, such as those are in porn. (Though if the site features plot-based scenes, I might comment on the plausibility of them and the acting.)
Your comment above on the site "Parasited" was what got me thinking about this. "Parasited" was the only site I refused to review when assigned it. As I said, when I'm spending my own money it's usually on sites featuring younger petite models, but I've reviewed BBW sites, I've reviewed gay sites, I've reviewed bi sites, I've reviewed MILF sites. Even if I'm not interested in the porn the site has, I can still write an objective review. When I was assigned to review "Parasited," I spent about 30 seconds on the tour page and emailed my boss to say "Nope, can't do that one."

Oh yes, the significant difference to mainstream, that there are actors that can be evaluated in so many ways about their performance. In contrast to porn where perhaps it's how interested, invested, adept the performer in a specific act or general way, i.e. doesn't know or appear interested in giving oral (primarily to another G) to any great effect.
I've seen reviews "This is the greatest ever"; "What an amazing story"; "It was boring."; "It was awful"; I have an analytical mind that operates in objectivity, so immediately I want to know how it was so-and-so, what about it had them 'say' that? I was primarily thinking of the user reviews on Metacritic. Generally it is either 9, 10 (perhaps justification of effort) or 2, 1, 0 (the slightest issue with the script is major)
It's great to hear from somebody with so much experience and skill, a professional critic. In the distant past, we didn't usually get so many everyday person reviews, but these days with pure numbers being the basis for advertising revenue, the more the merrier. ^ I find that a lot of "professional" reviews aren't very thorough either. I won't name site names, but many reviews seem to be written by someone who barely scratched the surface of the site. It usually takes me several days to do a deep dive into a site to find hidden gems and flaws. For example, I'll usually download a ton of stuff whether I want to keep it or not with the goal being to see if there is a download limit. I've found download limits on sites where other reviews have said none exists.
Then again, I write porn site reviews because I love porn. Getting paid is just icing on the cake.
