They are just like the TV station logos that can't be removed on most commercial channels (thanks a lot for starting this trend, VH-1 !!!). I realize that this rant has been made before, but I am especially peeved because I just reviewed a Private/Penthouse production called FASHION, which has these huge, black, crude and very unsightly camera icons on the top right of the screen that really distracted from the gorgeous women and equally gorgeous visuals. These damn little pictures just get in the way and make me feel like I am watching something on my computer instead of an actual porno MOVIE!!!! If I knew this DVD had such features, I would have saved myself $25.00 and not bothered. So please, to all DVD manufacturers out there...screw the multiple angles feature, or else, don't use the damn icons! We all know how to use a DVD player...we all know when our player indicates an alternate angle is present...we don't need these ugly signs distracting us when we're watching your products. Stop the madness... [Link] |

Diesel, Get ready for the reply that it is not possible for them to make the Multi-Angle logo an optional feature, even though it was done on Ghostbusters, Tomorrow Never Dies and The Matrix by utilizing Sub-titles (which on DVD's do NOT have to be text, but can also be graphics). The last two times this topic came up, the DVD company representatives that were participating in the thread mysteriously disappeared when this was pointed out to them. To my knoledge multiple angle icons are NOT included to any of discs, but generated by the DVD-players own software. And i have _never_ even heard about a player that doesn´t include option to disable this eh "feature". Diesel: Do you use a standalone DVD player? What about consulting your players manual or simply browsing the players setup/menu settings. I´m sure you´ll find an easy answer there. Edited by - absinthe on 10/03/2000 [Link] |

These multiple angle icons are definitely NOT generated by the DVD player. They are imprinted on the image from the software. I know my DVD players inside out, and there is no option to disable the icons. How are you able to get rid of them? If I gave you a Vivid disc, you know of a way to get rid of that blue "Vivid DVD" insignia? Or that black camera from Private/Penthouse's CALL GIRL and FASHION? If so, please let me know and I will forever be grateful... [Link] |

I haven´t seen a Vivid nor Private releases with multiple angles included. If they have icons, with companies own colours/fonts/layouts, popping to the screen it really seems that they aren´t generated by the DVD-players own software. I stand corrected and apologize the disinformation I posted. To the subject "no more multiple angles" I still want to add that on most titles (Digital Playground, Warner and Universal for example) doesn´t have an icon as a forced feature. And this is the path I´d like all production companies to follow. -Absconder Edited by - absinthe on 10/03/2000 Edited by - absinthe on Oct 3 2000 [Link] |

Just an extra point of information: Depending on how your DVD player handles multiple angles, you might easily wind up with TWO "angle" icons on your screen -- one generated by your DVD player, the other actually placed on the image by the producing company. In the Display Setup menu on my players (Pioneer), there is a "Yes/No" option for "Angle mark." I usually keep it set at "No," because (1) I have yet to see an alternate angle that's better than the one the director and editor originally chose, and (2) because I figure I'll get an angle mark anyway on the image. _However_, if I should click the Display button on my remote while the show is running (say, to find out how long until the movie ends), that voids my Setup Menu choice and I get _both_ angle marks! I would strongly prefer alternate-angle notification as a "Subtitle" option, so as to leave the picture "icon-free" if I so choose. Chances are, though, it costs a penny or two more to produce that way, so we'll probably never see it from most, if not all, porn producers! [Link] |

Greybeard -> Just an extra point of information: Depending on how your DVD player handles multiple angles, you might easily wind up with TWO "angle" icons on your screen -- one generated by your DVD player, the other actually placed on the image by the producing company.Me-> This indeed might happen, but as I said I´ve never seen an icon placed on the image (e.g. "virtual sex w/T.P" doesn´t have an icon) Greybeard -> In the Display Setup menu on my players (Pioneer), there is a "Yes/No" option for "Angle mark." I usually keep it set at "No," because (1) I have yet to see an alternate angle that's better than the one the director and editor originally chose, Me -> We are talking about extra features here, not how to make our own versions of real movies with our not-so-great cinematographic views. Multiple angles are used either to add depth in explainig how the movie was made (Matrix and Mallrats) or give ability of peeking additional material shot for a straight-to-video releases (not actual movies but porn, music videos and educational releases) Greybeard -> and (2) because I figure I'll get an angle mark anyway on the image. _However_, if I should click the Display button on my remote while the show is running (say, to find out how long until the movie ends), that voids my Setup Menu choice and I get _both_ angle marks! Me -> As I said putting an icon to the image isn´t the industry norm, so most of times you _won´t_ recognize that additional material is to be found. Pressing "display" will give you the anglemark, but you can get rid of it with the running count by simply pressing "display" again. Greybeard -> I would strongly prefer alternate-angle notification as a "Subtitle" option, so as to leave the picture "icon-free" if I so choose. Chances are, though, it costs a penny or two more to produce that way, so we'll probably never see it from most, if not all, porn producers! Me -> It may a penny or perhaps not a half of it, but like Broderick pointed the Matrix way of notificating multi angles won´t be understood by producers for a while >->. absinthe: (1) You said earlier that you haven't seen any Vivid or Private multi-angle DVDs yet. While I haven't seen any Private ones, I know for a fact that both Vivid and VCA do use "forced" multiple angle icons on the image itself. You just haven't encountered any of these yet.(2) While I agree that extra angles and material in "general" releases definitely contribute to the study and understanding of how a director and editor put together a film or piece of entertainment, I stand by my earlier comments about most of the extra angle material I've seen in adult DVDs. After majoring in Film in college and more than 12 years as a professional writer-producer-director of films and audiovisual materials, I believe I'm entitled to my opinion. I do recognize, though, that is only my opinion, and that many others find the extra material enjoyable. My main objection, though, is that these extra angles and material cost valuable "real-estate" on the surface of the disk, which can only contain a finite number of bytes of information. Other posts and threads in this forum contain some horror stories about DVD companies actually cutting some of their best works nearly in _half_ merely to gain space on the disk for these extras! I'm buying the disk for the _feature_, not the extra stuff! (3) Of course, I already knew about how to get rid of the angle mark again, but thanks for completing the thought for some others who might have encountered the same situation and not known how to get out of it. As far as "industry norms" are concerned, since this is _Adult_ DVD Talk, my experience has been that these intrusive angle marks are quite prevalent on adult DVDs, less so on the "general" titles -- otherwise, why would Diesel have even started this thread? (4) I'm in complete agreement about your last comment, but there is hope! Simply because this discussion is taking place here in ADT, it will be read by people in the adult DVD industry. That much said, we can hope that what they read here will generate some questions and interest in getting up to speed on alternate ways to approach the problem! Excellent points -- both stimulating and informative! Edited by - greybeard on Oct 4 2000 [Link] |

It is my understanding that VCA will be releasing special editions of LATEX and SHOCK, to include multiple angles!!! To quote Charlie Brown, "Arrggghhh!!!"Is my information wrong? Dear God, I hope that they leave out this ridiculous "feature." [Link] |

Well, looking at it from the studios' perspective, mutiple angles are one way of answering fans' demands for more content on DVDs. In many cases, there's a bunch of extra footage (especially when some scenes are cut to 20% or less of the original take).I totally agree that the mutiple angles watermark burned into the picture is distracting, and probably not necessary. Some studios are more discreet about the placement and size of the watermark than others, but it's not necessary, given that most home DVD players have an on-screen display icon or a light on the front panel of the player. As to why the practice occurs, I suspect that it's to prevent anyone from "missing them" and getting upset that the "feature" listed on the box doesn't exist. It's also more expensive to encode additional footage, so they want you to know that it's there. As far as I'm concerned, there's a reason why multiple angles are not used that often on DVDs (except in porn): They aren't worth watching. If the film or video editor is doing his or her job, then the best possible footage is presented on the main track. Therefore, most of the stuff you see on the other angles is either junk or not much different. And if you don't have "real" multiple angles (i.e. multiple cameras with synched footage), you're just watching other portions of the take with dubbed audio. While I'm sympathetic to why the studios have this practice, I'd just as soon have a no-frills disc than have the mood of a perfectly good (or at least decent) scene broken by a watermark. I have cable, so I can see that whenever I want... Saki [Link] |

By the by, here's some info on some _more_ "multiple angles" we can do without!Just got around to screening NuTech's DVD release of "Easy," a late-70s classic and Jesie St. James' first film. The transfer is beautiful, and Jim Holliday's and Jill Kelly's comments are worthwhile. However, I was a bit suspicious about the "multiple angles" touted on the case. Let's face it, NuTech was lucky to find a halfway-decent transfer of a good print of a film that old. I doubted that any out-takes or "trim-bin" stuff could possibly have survived, and since the film was almost certainly shot single-camera, there would be no "second-camera" footage at all. I was right! You know what all the "second angle" shots were? Exactly the same footage as the primary angle, reversed left-to-right and slightly enlarged!! I could have gotten the same effect looking at the screen in a mirror! While I applaud NuTech for helping restore the classics, I could do without the "me-too" attempt to join the "multiple-angles" bandwagon when what's on the disc really aren't multiple angles. Better to save disc space for even better-quality mastering! [Link] |

I have to agree with the earlier statements regarding Private's 'idiot angle' symbol. It's the size of an elephant. Most people SHOULD have enough knowledge of their player to know how to turn symbols on and off. WHY would a company put a symbol that cannot be removed on the screen?? I also just purchased Fashion but haven't had a chance to see it. Had I known it had the same symbol they used in Call Girl I doubt if I would've purchased it. Maybe if enough people voice their opinion the companies will listen and lose the symbols. I don't mind the angles (never really use them) but I hate seeing a symbol I can't turn off - especially the gigantic one that Private uses. [Link] |

Hey, PornAddict...that damn black icon on FASHION was pretty damn annoying, wasn't it? The damn thing looks like one of those censoring dots you see in some magazines, and just about has the same effect! I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one furious about what Private/Penthouse has done to this otherwise fantastic video.C'mon all you video companies out there: VCA with their camera symbol; Vivid with their blue "Vivid DVD" insignia; Metro with their "2ND ANGLE" description; and all other DVDs that insult our intelligence and ruin the picture by using these obnoxious icons --- cut the multiple angles out now! Just wanted to mention that Metro seems to be doing away with that awful "2ND ANGLE" graphic on the bottom right of their movies. MEMOIRS OF A MADAM had no icons or symbols whatsoever on angle 2 of their DVD, and I applaud and appreciate their creative and production decision...Unless of course, it was just a mistake. [Link] |
