I turned "history kill" off and on but the results were the same on some sites. I have noticed on some sites if I refresh the page a couple of times the images will show up. Anyone ever heard of this problem? Or how to fix it. [Link]

I used the little smilie face with a christmas hat for a short period, but there was a 24 hour period when it didn't come in. The images that don't come up, where are they located? If they are located at a site that has a slow server, it may be just a timeout problem. DenverDon [Link]

If you are on a broadband connection, purchase a router that has a good hardware-based firewall built into it (such as the US Robotics USR8000 series -- Netgear and others make similar equipment). These are inexpensive (under $60, typically) and will give you excellent security with minimal problems. If you absolutely must use a software-based firewall, get Zone Alarm or BlackIce Defender. If you are on a dial-up connection, you don't need the firewall -- Norton's or any others. The only other things you should have are a good anti-virus program (Norton or MacAfee are both very good -- keep them updated!) and the Ad-aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy utilities (this pair keep things that should not be pushed to your computer from taking hold). ~ GaySatyr [Link]

Problem was a setting in Data Protection (don't know if it is named like that in english, I use german version). There you can add trusted sites somewhere. [Link]

Click to expand I too have Norton's Internet Security, having read various reviews saying it was the best, and while I can't say I like it much, I can't say that I hate it. It is a 100% rip-off. It is a waste of money and it is just plain and simply bad software. For dial-up internet access, get anti-virus software (Norton or McAfee - ~$30), anti-spy software (SpyBot S&D - FREE), and anti-ad software (Ad-aware - FREE). For broadband access, including any form of DSL, cable, or satellite connection to the internet, add one more thing: a router which includes a good hardware-based firewall. One of the best of these is the very inexpensive US Robotics model USR-8000A. It is under $60 and is extremely easy to install. That is all you need to be protected. ~ GaySatyr [Link]

Once I got it configured for the level of "security" I wanted, I was all good to go. I don't have problems with ADT because I don't use the Privacy features of NIS. What I DO use, though is the anti-spam program, the ad-blocking stuff, and obviously anti-virus. Having never had ad blocking or anti-spam software before, that is PRETTY handy stuff... so I'm not complaining too much about NIS. It's configured now in a way that doesn't get in my way, but adds a few levels of extra security, and a few nice "annoyance blocking" features that I appreciate. Mike L. [Link]

GaySatyr Senior Member Half dirty ol' man; half horny ol' goat! 1684 Posts 10/00	Posted - Jan 16 2004 : 6:31PM Go into the Windows control panel and check properties for local area network connection(s) and make SURE that file & printer sharing is turned OFF Check properties for My Computer, click on the Network Identification tab, click on properties (again) and put some nonsense word/number combination where it says "Member of: WORKGROUP" Set your login so that a password is required (it can be something simple) You can then turn Norton's Privacy Control feature completely off with very little risk. ~ GaySatyr [Link]

I wouldn't necessarily turn off all privacy settings since I have no idea what else it's messing with. However allowing referrer data to be passed to all sites is not a big deal. They (Norton) seem to be making such a big fucking deal out of this. Unless you're visiting a kiddie porn site or doing something illegal you have nothing to hide. If you don't understand how referrer strings work here's a reader's digest version: method 1: Say your searching on Google and find a listing that looks good. You click the link to get to the new site. if your browser is passing referrer data then the site you clicked to knows that you got there from Google. if there's no referrer string then the site has no idea where you came from. method 2: you're browsing ADT. You click a link. Your browser requests the HTML source from the ADT server (potentially passing a referrer string in the process). The browser parses the HTML for the page, figures out how many images are there and then goes out and then issues separate requests for each image. With each request the browser should pass the URL of the web page you've requested in the referrer string. This lets the web server know you're actually viewing a legitimate HTML page.
