I have no technical knowledge of what goes on behind a site, but something seems odd to me about an occasional problem I'm having with Private.com.

I use Internet Download Manager, and that doesn't seem to be part of the problem. Most of the time I download a scene, I get reasonable download speeds of between 25 and 35 MB/s. I can see 90-105 on other sites, but I suspect that the Private server is on the other side of the Atlantic and that may cause slower speeds.

The problem is this though. I'll occasionally run across a file that downloads as slow as 250 KB/s and there doesn't seem to be a reason for it. I thought maybe I was being throttled, or maybe more people just came onto the site to download, but then through trying some different things, it appears that the problem is usually limited to one resolution only. For the newer movies, I've been downloading the 720p files just to save space. Going up to 1080p can be a large file size difference. But what I've found is that if I get slow speeds on the 720p file, I can usually download the larger 1080p file at the much faster speed. Also, with scenes that have this problem, streaming is almost impossible because of the constant buffering waiting for more data to load. That seems to happen with both resolutions, but I might be wrong on that.

Does anyone know why some files on the site only load slowly while others load faster? And idea why that can ever differ between different resolutions of the same scene.

I should add that I have found scenes that download slowly and I've gone back to them 12 hours later and they seem to be faster.

It seems so random for what are likely on the same server.

This isn't a problem that I'm looking to solve, but I'm curious as to why this might be. I can't recall in my long history of subscribing to sites that this has happened before.

Thanks.

Taking the last first, you're seeing different download times because the demands on their servers changes over time.

The reason different resolutions of the same scene have different download times is because the higher the resolution, the more bandwidth it takes up, and it can be a lot more. That internet 'pipe' ain't getting any bigger, so those larger files need more time to download.

Now, you might be able to get a faster connection from your internet provider, but we don't know if the logjam is on your provider's network or not.

Ergo, if the site has tech support, start there, but their incentive is to get more money out of you, so bear that in mind.

^ Thanks for weighing in. I appreciate it.

I think I may have badly described the issue though. If I take a specific scene that I'm having trouble with, the lower resolution file (720p) which may be 1 GB seems to be choked off at 200-300 KB/s where the higher resolution file (1080p) which may be 2 GB can be downloaded at 25 MB/s. I understand that it might be timing, but if so, there are a lot of coincidences because what happens almost all the time is that I try downloading the 720p file and see it's slow, so I immediately switch to the higher resolution file and it's fast. It's an order of magnitude too. The 720p file says it'll take five hours and the 1080p file takes me less than a minute. Then, as soon as I've downloaded the larger file in under a minute, I'll always go back and try the smaller file just to see, and it's always still slow. This has happened at least 100 times so far.

Is it possible that Private uses a different server depending on the resolution? But if so, keep in mind that this only happens with maybe 20% of the 720p files.

To a layman, this just seems odd.

Thanks again!

Consider what would happen if Private purchased the best available server in 2000, then added the best available server in 2010. They would have two servers with different performance capabilities. If they had the capacity to move some, but not all of their older files to the newest server would we see the issue you describe?
