I also think that it is hard to sell a lack of variety in a culture already accustomed to variety. I like the fact that my movies tend to feature five different women. After all, that variety is why I use porn in the first place. In this vein, I think it might be a lot more possible to pitch American style variety to the Japanese that it is to pitch Japanese style homogeneity to the Americans.

The final problem I have with your suggestion is that sure, it is great to get a movie with five scenes of your very favorite performer, but how many of those kinds of movies are you willing to get with women who are not your very favorites? Given how diverse tastes can be, it seems like the target audience gets very small very fast. In a movie with five women, I might pick it up because I am wild about girl 4, and a someone else might be crazy for girl 3, and you might love girl 1. If all five scenes feature girl 1, perhaps of the three of us, only you will get it, and thus the market is cut into one third (or even to one fifth, depending on how popular girls 2 and 5 were).

There's a large number of studios. The big name ones are S1, Moodyz and Alice Japan, and all of them recruit their girls. They do it in public too, which is rather amazing. They actually have recruiters in places like Roppongi who approach girls and ask them if they are interested in doing porn. For an American equivalent, imagine Vivid and Wicked putting people in Universal Citywalk or Venice Beach and approaching hot girls. Never, ever happen.

Anyway, those studios tend to build their own talent, and that's all they do is single-title movies. Some girls start with smaller studios and move up. Maria Ozawa started out as an amateur under the name Miyabi before being signed by S1, while Sora Aoi was with Kuki, a smaller studio.

Some girls do double shifts. Yuma Asami and Yua Aida were doing one movie a month for S1 and another studio. Yuma with Alice Japan, I forget who with Yua. Yuma recently took a sabbatical from porn because she was doing 2 a month and claimed in her blog she was worn out. She takes a right pounding in her movies, so I can believe it.

But most do one movie a month, that's it, she's on the cover, in every scene, done. After that they make tons of public appearances. Japan is the size of California, has 120 million people, and 1/4 of them are in the Tokyo area. So those girls will make like a dozen signing appearances at video stores all over the place, and JAV pays well, so most girls can live on one porno a month and public appearances. They might also do photobooks, something that doesn't exist in this country at all.

Girls at smaller studios do tend to do more movies per month, but even the most prolific girls, like Hotaru Akane, does like 4 movies a month. So really, they don't run the risk of saturation or overexposure. Citing the Missy Monroe example, total up the number of one-off scenes she's doing in movies per month. I'll bet it comes out to two movies a month with just her, right?

Girls in the US do tons of movies because they get, what, about $1k per movie? That's because they have one scene, maybe two if they are lucky. As I pointed out, doing a 5 scene movie in a 1-2 day period nets the girl a buck chunk of coin all at once, and she can work a few days a month.

One thing that is known is the girls' salaries are adjusted with each title, because they look at how well the titles sell. When one girl is in the movie, the studio knows immediately if she's a hit or not. If she is, that puts her in the driver's seat because she knows she's a draw and is in a position to demand more money. So it's really good for the girls.
