Perfect example -- I go to change my forum profile, and the little boxy pop-upy thing doesn't open. A blank white window thing comes up, and the computer freezes. No windows will close, the computer won't be shut off, nothing. It takes 20 or 30 minutes to chew on things and shut down. After a few days of ignoring that, when I click on links, the computer locks up. So I surf around without opening links. Nice. In either case, when it does this, the task panel shows the cpu is 100% in use. Running MSConfig doesn't help. Running spybot doesn't do it, or maybe it works for 15 minutes after rebooting. Deleting cookies and temporary files worked at least once. All our earthlink updates and windows updates, etc. have been done. Anyway, when we get frustrated, we do all those things and it works briefly. We added Spyware Blaster, too. Still all the same problem. Now what? [Link] |

(Antivirus, personal firewall, spamkiller) Are you using Internet Explorer, Firefox or something else as your browser? Do you have any 3rd party 'toolbars' installed in your browser? |

My husband does those, and he mostly uses the computer to play chess, so the person doing the updating is not the person who experiences the resulting problems. However, he regularly updates Spybot and AVG, and has updated Earthlink a few times. We have XP on auto update. McAfee is totally uninstalled as far as we know. We run ie, and have not tried firefox. The only third party toolbar we have is Earthlink. I surely hope that is somehow illuminating. It's clear as mud to us. |

Now for the real news -- this computer didn't run this fast when we bought it last December! Yes! Thank you! You know who I'm gonna turn to next time. (All he did while I was gone was install firefox without an Earthlink toolbar). Now I have to eat that soup and get dressed as a witch. Edit -- a spoonful of homemade blackberry jam in a little pool on top of the Malt O Meal. Edited by - lindi on 10/31/2005 8:05:04 PM |

Don't try to delete Internet Explorer, though. The good folks at Microsoft made sure it was ::ahem:: part of the operating system (cough...cough), so Windows will be very unhappy if you try to remove it. |
