Well it looks like all the OF haters might've finally gotten their wish. Yesterday Variety posted a story claiming that OnlyFans will ban sexually explicit content starting in October. Other news outlets (Reuters, the New York Times, Bloomberg etc) have run the story as well but as far as I can tell Variety is the source. Allegedly, they received a press release from OnlyFans corporate about this. It seems kinda weird to me that they would pick Variety to break this story but maybe this is part of their new media strategy. There's a few people on twitter saying that the story is completely fake (and it wouldn't be the first time that mainstream media outlets dog piled on a fake porn story) but I guess we'll find out soon either way. So what does everybody else think about this development? Is Variety about to get embarrassed or is OnlyFans really gonna pull a Tumblr?

Interesting article on Slate. I presume I can link it here.

https://slate.com/technology/2021/08/onlyfans-porn-ban-cruel.html

A quote from the article:

OnlyFans' decision to sell out porn creators fits neatly into a narrative of greed. Anyone can see that OnlyFans would be a fraction of its current self without this specific class of worker, and few misdeeds in business are easier to grasp than a company freezing out the people who helped build it. But OnlyFans' move is actually more insidious than that. Because of the relationship the platform has with its creators, the structure of U.S. labor law, and the exploitative and abusive tendencies of the porn industry, what OnlyFans is doing is not just shameful, but fundamentally cruel.

My opinion is that the cruelty to women in general and sex workers specifically isn't a secondary effect of these moves but it is baked into it's DNA. Cruelty is a big part of the motivation. A BIG part of the motivation.

^ "Some [sex workers] may feel pressure to work in the more established commercial porn industry, which is rife with abuse. There are too many articles about the industry’s exploitativeness to pick from, but Vice’s Samantha Cole wrote a good one in 2020 that detailed how casually boundaries are breached on sets. The business is also full of people angling to take big cuts of performers’ earnings."

I can't see the typical OF model joining a porn studio. I don't think this genie can be put back into the bottle. Private snapchats were a big thing before OnlyFans and I have a feeling that it'll become a thing again very soon. Either that or a surge in camming. As for the Slate article, it was depressing to say the least. So many companies realize the potential of sex workers when it comes to building their platform but none of them seem willing to stay the course. I know that the payment processors are really what's behind this but still...at some point you would think that a company would see the value in fighting back. There's clearly a lot of money to be made in becoming the Amazon of Porn. But maybe I'm wrong.

On another OF thread, member Fit18, who is an industry insider, speculates that one issue that may have credit card companies cracking down are the number of chargebacks they are getting. Many of the OF content creators are far from professional and they may be failing to deliver of what customers have paid for thereby generating high numbers of chargebacks.

Here's a link to that post:

Onlyfans is terrible, why do people like it?
