Organizing your dvd collection

Diville Member 102 Posts 12/99	Posted - Jan 29 2008 : 10:44PM This may be better suited for the Tech Talk forum, but I have a really big mainstream DVD collection that I organize using a cheap program called Readerware (http://www.readerware.com). The task of creating my own database from scratch was just too daunting, so I let somebody else do the work for me. Just enter the ISBN number from the back of the DVD case, and it will query the internet for all the data. I don't use it for porn, but it will work for that too. I checked. You can buy a barcode reader if that makes the data entry easier for you. That's all you need, but I exported everything into MySQL, spent a long weekend sharpening my PHP skills, and built my own website. Building the site was actually easier than building all the shelving to hold them all. [Link]

The colums are (from left to Right) # of DVD's in Title, Title, My Ratiung (1 - 10 or NTW, Need to Watch), Release Tear, Distributor, Genre, Sub-Genre, Star(s), Secondary Stars, Memo Section. It may seem like quite a bit buy frankly, it is easy to maintain and sort using the tabs. I have different lists on different tabs - sorted by title, by year released, by my rating, by genre, by grenre and reverse ratings (putting the hiest up top), by star,etc., I color the cell with the title in it with yellow if the disc has been ordered but has not yet arrived. I also keep a separate spreadsheet for rentals. If I decide to buy the rental, then it is easy toi simply insert it into the other spreadsheet. Hope this helps. [Link]

Hardware All-Star Member Your other left 14594 Posts 3/02	Posted - Feb 1 2008 : 3:53AM Open your spreadsheet, then press the "Print Screen" button (top row, right side of the keyboard). This will capture an image of whatever part of the spreadsheet is currently visible on your screen. Open MSPaint and paste the image into that program, then save the pasted image as a JPEG file. This JPEG can be uploaded to Adult DVD Talk just like any other picture file. Of course, if you are using any Macros in your spreadsheet they will lost in translation. [Link]

I figured that a database was needed if I was to be able to search for all DVDs that had a given star and have them show up in one sub-list. Is there a way around this with Excel? [Link]

I have a cell for the primary female star/stars (I titled the column "STAR #1") and one next to that for the remaining female stars (which I titled "2ndary Stars"). In the event that I run out of room, I also have a memo field that I can include other stars that wouldn't fit into the other fields. I should tell you that I use the tabs at the bottom of the Excel file to organzie the data in different orders. For example, my primary list is sorted alphabetically by DVD title. I also have sorts for year released, by my rating, by genre, by grenre and reverse ratings (putting the highest rated up top), AND, of interest to you, BY STAR. If you are consistant with your desired stars and usually put them as STAR #1, then you will have a list of movies staring your desired star. However, even my favorite stars are not always STAR #1, so what to do.... The only other way around that, and the one I most frequently use, is to do a simple FIND (or search). In Excel, the code is "Ctrl-F", list your star and you can see every movie in which she appears. I own 1, 149 adult DVD titles and have found this to be the best method for me. If not, then the answer is no, you can't import your paper list into Excel. Even if you do have the required hardware and software, it is questionable whether a hand-written document will scan the way you want it to. That is to say, even if the OCR software correctly recognizes all the characters and produces a faithful reproduction (a big if), Excel may not be able to turn the resulting document into the kind of spreadsheet you expect. For example, let us say that your list of movies is tracking title, producer, director, year of production and cast list. You can easily determine what Klimaxx, Sin City, Kris Kramski, 1997, Angel Ambrose, Bridget Monroe, Gina Savage, Illana Moore and Wanda Curtis represents. Excel, on the other hand, cannot - because the same delimiter is separating the fields and items with the &quotlist" field. So, unless your paper list is in machine readable form AND formatted such that Excel can determine the fields correctly, you might as well do the data entry by hand. [Link]

bigfoot Senior Member 1295 Posts 7/06	Posted - Feb 3 2008 : 3:35PM Hey Loveporn - About two years ago, my harddrive crashed and I lost all my data (lesson learned - since then, I've obviously learned the importance of regularly backing up the data). My point is that I needed to recreate my lists, which includes mainstream DVD's (currently at about 2,000 titles), adult DVD's (currently at 1,100 titles), videotapes (at the time, it was about 800 titles - I no longer keep a list), laserdiscs (87 of them), CD's (about 900), LP's (746), classic video game systems and games (in all, about 700 titles) and books on CD's. You would think somthing like this would take forever, but working off printouts that were up to three months old, it honestly only took a couple of weeks (perhaps 10 or 11 hours in all). The bottom line is that having a list of, let's say, adult titles that you can sort by genre, main actress, company, year, rating or any combination (such as "best ratings by genre", "Evil Angel Titles by release year" or "all movies starring Annette Haven") is something that I find incredibly valuable. Once you make the effort to create the spreadsheet, all this info is right at your fingertips and is SO WORTHWHILE for the perverts of the world like me! [Link]

It is easy to maintain - adding new titles are as easy as inserting a new row and filling in the blanks. Plus, since it is not a database, there are no "customized" reports but since Excel is so user friendly, you can get the same info with little effort. There is also DVDProfiler, but that one costs $30 for a lifetime membership and only runs on PCs. The upside is you can categorize your adult stuff with profiler and it is stored on your computer as opposed to only on the net. I am actually going to pay for it once I pick up VM Fusionware to run a virtual PC. I actually really like DVDAficionado, though, I just wish I could catalog the adult stuff too. [Link]

For example: wanted to list certain positions and things that I like, like jack hammers, Prince Yashua's flips, girls with glasses, gagging with drool, how big a cum shot was, and other stuff. So I started using wordpad for each individual movie or Online scene. The terms are, of course, still searchable in the file explorer. Also, as much work as it can be, the texts can be linked to the Excel entry. [Link]
