He had elevated this almost to an ‘art’(?) form … “one, two, three, … let’s check her tonsils through her butt”. At the time I sort of assumed this was a European thing that quickly became copied and prevalent in American production. Recently when I was going through the Private site, I was reading about a movie and they stated that the movie had ‘American style gapes’ in it. My question, to those more knowledgeable than I am, is where did this originate? Who is imitating whom?

So, John "Buttman" Stagliano is the man responsible for the
way things are shaped in contemporary porn.
People could say that he just imported European porn to the US, but you'd be hard-pressed to find anything like Face Dance in European adult movies before Buttman.
So, much like Peckinpah and spaghetti westerns, Stagliano
just felt that something was in the air and that the time had come to stir things up. He did not invent anal sex or gapes, but he DID came up with this new vision.
Rocco Siffredi works for (with?) John, and not the other way
around.

the answer I believe is TOM BYRON, when he was making appearences in EVIL ANGEL's (BUTTMAN's) videos in the early 90's(?) he showed this to John. AND I believe that John liked it, so he asked a name for this move, which if I'm not mistaken, Tom Byron thought of.---BIGmike, over & out!--- [Link] |

Max Hardcore is often cited as creating the so-called "gape shot" as it appears in today's porn, which he first filmed back in the early 90's. MAX HARDCORE was probably the first in the US to show anal gapes constantly in his films, but a French lady called LETITTIA (I'm not sure if the spelling is correct), was producing amature porn in the 80's and 90's that focused on anal gapes and anal toys.She also had LeCastel in some of her films. I agree... I think Max was filming gapes when Tom Bryon still looked like he didn't need to shave everyday. Max started lensing gapes first for the occasional segment on Mr. Peepers Amatuer home videos. Those early scenes were filmed in his modest apartment before he moved in the mansion in the hills. The girls were totally unknown. But he really started featuring them in the original Anal Adventures of Max Hardcore and America's Raunchiest Home Videos for Zane. I remember thinking when I saw the first Max Hardcore with Fantasia (Brooke Ashley) -- wow, this *really* is hardcore. It was sort of shocking how explicit and long her anal scenes were. There was one other line that even predates Max that often featured gapes -- Caught From Behind. Max took it to higher level, but CFB was probably an inspiration to him. The heyday of Caught From Behind was circa 1984-1986 with a few other occasionally good episodes. I can recall some decent gaping in especially in III and IV. Most often than not it was Ron Jeremy who acted as Gaper. I believe these classics are coming to DVD soon. I'm not sure how they will look since they are old, but I hope Hollywood Video does a good job with them. As I think about it more, in the 80's Ron snuck quite a few anal gapes in his appearances. He gaped Elle Rio very explicitly in a Western Visuals movie where she was dressed as an Arabian babe. In the same sequence he performed a ultra rare double anal on her using a dildo. I also remember some decent gaping involving Ron and Tiffany Storm and I think Tanya Foxx in the same movie. Oh yeah, I felt very much the same way when I first saw Max's work and I've been hooked on his stuff ever since! And let's not forget Tammi Ann, Vanessa Chase, Lovette, Davia Ardell, Barbie Angel and Little Sinderella who have had the unique experience of getting their orifices ripped apart by Mr. Hardcore.
