Yesterday I rented Ass Clowns 3. Parts of it are "censored" and we are told to buy the very expensive directors cut at the website of Extreme Associates. Porn lovers in the world unite and protest against this outrageous marketing tactics. Never, never buy anything as silly as a directors cut. Don't give the greedy warthogs of Extreme Associates the pleasure of making money twice on what is most likely practically the same vid or DVD.

(I know that Ass Clowns 3 is a vid and not a DVD, but I thought the subject important.)

Looks like they've been studying the Gayporn sales tactics there..

Ah well, I'll do better than boycott Ass Clowns, I won't buy anything from Extreme, not even Tommy B's stuff.

cheers,

How obvious / bad are the cuts ?

Extreme should release the directors cut of all their tapes on to DVD, but this simply will not happen.

Maybe Extreme should consider these points for the future:

Firstly who's going to pay $40 for a VHS tape today ?

Secondly, by NOT releasing a directors cut on dvd, many hardcore fans will avoid the soft version because they know there's stuff missing.

Extreme is producing videos with fisting, Golden Showers (I think) and a combination of bondage and penetration. Distributors and retailers in the US are not willing to sell these versions for fear of prosecution (persecution?).

Therefore, Extreme has versions that are edited for the U.S.. Other companies, such as Zane and Seymore Butts Home Video do the same thing. However, these other companies just edit this content out of their movies, so you never know that it was there in the first place. I believe that you used to be able to buy the unedited version of Seymore Butts movies directly from him, but given his recent legal troubles, I don't know if you can still do this.

Extreme just blacks out the screen during these scenes, thereby letting you know what you are missing because of U.S. obscenity (censorship) laws.

If you are someone who wants to purchase the unedited versions of Extreme titles, I would suggest that, rather than buying them immediatly at your retailer, you rent them first. Then decide whether you want to purchase them, and if you want the unedited (European) version of the movie.

Wow, I can't believe that I just defended Extreme.

Hardz, the cuts are very obvious. The screen becomes black and you can read "censored" in red capital letters. Then comes an exhortation to purchase the full version from Extreme's own site.

Bill, I don't think they do this to let us know that we are missing something because of the ridiculous obscenity laws, neither do I think that what they have blotted out contains anything illegal, but that I can't know for sure of course. What I'm quite sure of however is that they want to earn money twice on one product and as scipio says that they have borrowed the gay sales tactics earlier commented upon on this board.

By the way what did I think of the vid? I like rough fucking but this guy Zupko is just too weird. At least we have here a porn director with ideas of his own but they are more strange than good.

From Hardz:
Exactly. Few people are , but by luring people in with the promise of something really off the hook they generate even more $$$ without having to expend alot of money doing so.
Now, on the other hand specialty tapes like some forms of bondage and Extreme's "Spare Parts" which was a no-condoms transsexual movie will in fact sell for an inflated price b/c there is no comparable product. I for one cant think of anyone else that makes,or has made a condom free tranny flick.

That makes very little sense.
If theres a directors cut, then thats the version the director wanted you to see but were unable to release it in the way it was intended to be seen.
If the film contains cuts because some scenes are illegal then how can a directors cut get a release ?.
Surely if both a normal cut & directors cut are available, then there's no reason to sell the nomal cut in the first place.

I don't think it's so much that's it's illegal to release, it's more of where can they release it. They probably make one version (edited) for all the areas, and keep the unedited to sell direct at the inflated price.

They probably figure that if they sell it direct, unedited from their warehouse, than they eliminate the middle man, who could get arrested for selling "obscene" materials. So in order to protect the distributors and/or retailers, they release edited forms of the movie.

because...
Certain geographical regions in the US have very different laws, so that is more than likely the reason.

Okay, I normally think of Extreme as a huge bunch of crybaby idiots, but I kind of have to support them here. If they want to make more extreme porn for those who like it, that's fine. Most people realize that they're operating in kind of a gray obscenity area, so if selling it direct is a way to protect the retailers rather than just charge an overinflated price to the public, then that's great and I applaud them for doing so. As it is, it looks like it's a way to get people to shill out more money to see the rest of the feature, which I can't support. I'd be a lot more supportive if they'd put a disclaimer on the box such as "edited for universal adult release" or something of the sort. they could even put a small line in there for original available at extremeass.com, or whatever their site it.

From Clubber:
Because U.S. obscenity (censorship) laws are fucked up. There is a screwed up phrase regarding "community standards". Therefore, what is acceptable in New York City, could be considered obscene in Alabama.

Because of this, the movie companies release versions that are acceptable nationwide. There are many companies that produce a "European" version of their films that contain things that could be considered objectionable in the U.S. However, these other companies are just not as reckless as the owners of Extreme are.

The people at Extreme Associates have a "professional wrestling fan" mentality, that they are invincible. You can bet your bottom dollar that you will soon hear about someone attempting to procecute Extreme for one of these "Director's Cuts" that have been purchased through the mail.

I don't mind if the dvd's are cut because of certain laws in certain areas, but I would be dissapointed in the way that they cut them (I have not seen an Extreme Associates disc). For instance, I don't want to be watching the disc only to have a black screen pop up saying "censored", go to our web site to buy the uncensored version. I'd rather have them do it professionally, edit the disc like you would a regular release without the black screen crap, and then at the end or beginning of the movie put an ad for the uncensored version that can be bought on the web site. Putting up a black screen to block out certain things to me is kind of tacky and cheap, it ruins the watching experience for the viewer. Do it properly and then advertise the uncut versions at the beginning or end.

I agree. However, I think that "professionally" and "Extreme Associates" are mutually exclusive terms.

You've hit the nail on the head M.B !

(Perhaps you should send them an e-mail copy of this thread)

I've seen 'COCKTAILS TOO' on dvd and have noticed they have a 'directors cut' on VHS.
The dvd was normal (no black censored screen), so perhaps this censored screen is only used on VHS releases or is this something new EXTREME ASSOCIATES has thought of ?

Why not release the directors cut on dvd and sell it through their web site ?
