In forcing/pressuring a woman to shave we are essentially controlling her pussy. It's also a more recent trend--time makes hair removal from other areas seem less pressing for the moment. Hair is also removed more easily from legs and armpits, with less damage to the skin (shaving the pubic region leaves razor bumps, while waxing literally rips the skin off). As you've said elsewhere, GGG, pubic hair styling is a means of communication. Even if a woman does have entirely personal and feminist reasons for removing her pubic hair--and I'm really not so sure that's even possible in America today--, the message she would be sending to male partners would very likely be drastically different from what she's trying to convey. Shaved pussy = insecure woman who succumbs to society's pressures to modify her body in order to make it more acceptable to males and show that she's always sexually available (perhaps so she can compete with his porn). Sounds harsh, I know. But our entire society is built upon making women feel insecure about themselves so that they consume more. Contemporary porn is one of the leading vehicles through which consumerism exerts its forces--manipulating male desire, leaving men forever unsatisfied so they're always searching for more (ideally spending more money in the process), making violent and degrading sexual behavior seem normal and acceptable, taking something as organic and natural as human beings having sex and transforming it into a sanitized, vulgar spectacle. Shaving is a big part of this. Men will of course insist that shaving is just "common courtesy" if the woman expects a man to lick her, or that they want to be able to see the vulva (as if a bush somehow hides it when you're actually in close and intimate proximity to one in person), or that it's sexier, more hygienic (always that obsession with female cleanliness), or whatever. When Jandi Lin retired after a year in the porn business, she said what she regretted the most was contributing to an entire generation's fucked up perception of sexuality. She has a point. [Link] |
