I really appreciate stars like Jenna Haze and Tori Black who (I'm throwing a number out) shoot maybe 50 scenes a year, gonzo or feature, for most of the major companies. My Underrated favorite, paradoxically, is former contract star Ava Rose, who I think has so-so acting talent but fantastic sex performances, but was hindered by shooting only a handful of scenes every year. I am a bit disappointed that Teagan went back under contract, and I hope that Bree Olson 2.0 stays freelance for a good long time.

I think you might be 'overrating' Jenna Jameson's level of activity [:p)]. I read an industry poster on here claim that she only shot 33 total movies in her 16 year career. The industry poster claimed that everything beyond 33 titles (IAFD has her listed at 149) consists of archive footage and/or consists of the unusual fact that she often got credited for being in a movie if she were in a commerical on the tape or DVD.

I'd have to disagree to some degree about her performances, I remember her standing out in the early 90s videos for the heat of her scenes. And that was before I realized just how big she was getting. Of course she never did anal, IR, DPs, etc but I think it's kind of absurd to refer to her as a 'prude' based on that. In terms of looks, she was hot but probably not remarkable, it was all a question of timing and place in terms of her success, she also very much met the public's idea of what a porn star was supposed to look like.
Annette Schwartz never got the recognition for her performances in my opinion. Shyla Stlyez is another HOTTIE that seems to be overlooked by far to many.

You know what, something else just came to mind. There have been many discussions about what the reason for JJ's success was. This thread has led me to consider one aspect that I haven't seen anybody bring up. Lez was humungus in the early to mid 90's. Younger consumers who can only look at things through the prism of modern porn might not realize this. In the early 90's, when I went to the video store to rent porn VHS tapes, I observed that it seemed like it was required for there to be at least one lezbo scene in every movie. It may just be my sampling, but from my pov there was no such thing as all b/g tapes. All b/g would have been disappointing in those days! Damn! Where's the girl-girl scene??? . These days you will find thousands of movies with no lezbo action at all--not the case in the early to mid 90's. Overrated how, though? I am not trying to argue, but I am intrigued. I have never heard of anyone not liking her for any reason, so I am curious. Do you dislike her looks? Her willingness to anything to anybody at all times at full speed? Do you not like natural boobs? Does the occasional bush she sports turn you off? (I don't like it) The heavy interracial? In a now continuing effort to nail down the terms of the post, over-rated/under-rated, I make a further contribution to the discussion. It may be of value to examine the concept "too popular" - the subject of some recent posts. In a sense 'too popular' could equate to 'over-rated'. Moreover, I'm thinking that, while it is not possible to quantitatively specify when a performer is too popular - that is, just because a performer has a particularly high number of fans (let's say, ludicrously, 50 million) she may not necessarily be 'too popular', it is, nonetheless, conceivable there still could be objective/rational grounds for describing a performer as too popular. The issue breaks down to: 1. what factors make a performer popular? 2. is there an element to the performer's profile such that the performer's level of popularity is unjustified? In my previous post to this thread I referred to Tera Patrick and Jenna Jameson as being over-rated (and, actually, both these performers feature regularly on other posters' lists). In terms of the two criteria identified above, and on a simple analysis:
Tera Patrick - (1) popular because she has smoking hot looks (and, personally, I don't think she lost much 'look heat' post-Boob Job) BUT (2) she delivers insipid performances, which don't justify the elevated level of her industry profile (and see the thread Insanely hot, but the sex not so much where Tera seems to be one of the the poster girls for the concept).
Jenna Jameson - (1) popular because of youthful cuteness and hot early scenes (and staying hot in the g/g space) BUT (2) she started phoning it in as her popularity grew and her looks degenerated every time she went near a cosmetic surgeon (pointing to a general lack of style/class), which have probably undermined her popularity with long-time porn fans, although her wider media/social profile is/remains prominent (at least for a porn star).
On the (minimal) basis of these two examples a 'too popular' performer will, therefore, have become generally popular for legitimate reasons but, if her on-screen performances start failing to generate heat, eventually she will just be 'famous for being famous' (too popular). On a side note, and perhaps relevantly in terms of maintaining popularity, both Jenna and Tera have both leveraged their careers by owning/running production companies. I acknowledge many (possibly many, many) porn fans, myself included, are still capable of rubbing one out while watching either Jenna or Tera perform, even if the performance is less than outstanding. This possibly goes to the nature of a person's attraction to the performer in the first place. In Jenna's case, whenever I see the 'Heartbreaker' tat my sexual memory revives the early (and multiple) moments of pleasure Ms Jameson gave me (eg; Silk Stockings - scene with Tiffany Mynx; Photoplay - scenes with Felecia and Ashlyn Gere; Satyr - scene with Missy; there are others) and then, (generally) no matter what Jenna scene I'm (re-) watching, I just can't help myself. With Tera, my personal boat is floated by the fantasy of the cliched 'girl with looks too good for porn' being fucked; simple as that really - of course I have to ignore the lifeless movements, the fake moaning, and, if present, an over-inked goon spoiling the visuals. The above discussion highlights the concepts popular/too popular as being on a continuum where the element of historic time is significant. Unless it is the case for a particular performer that any level of popularity is excessive, then a too popular performer must have been justifiably popular at some time. Thus right here right now, and despite how my dick responds, at an objective level I consider Jenna and Tera currently more famous than justified (too popular/over-rated). I appreciate this post can really only be of interest to porn philosophers lacking attention deficit disorder, and who may disagree with my observations anyway, by ever so slightly fleshing out the concept of over-ratedness and not much else (and even then solely relating to the dimension of popularity). In a future contribution I will be assessing Kristina Rose in terms of being extremely popular but not 'too popular' and whether that means she's under-rated, or what? This will be in the context of a general discussion of under-ratedness, which has, so far, not really been explored. Be warned and ready to scroll down...

I have recently been called out for my observation that John Leslie (RIP) is/was over-rated. I will now observe that when it is possible to examine an artist's body of work in its entirety, which JL's tragic demise enables us to do, over-rated becomes an ephemeral and meaningless concept. Yeah, I'm serious. These girls all get so much credit but they're really not all that. Sasha Grey is one of the most overrated stars ever. Gina Lynn isn't that pretty and she gets big roles from great companies often. Faye Reagan, I never understood the attraction for her and I'm surprised she was even wanted to perform in porn. Karloff, that's what you think but I consider most the girls in my overrated lists to be Goddesses. You can call them 4s or 5s if you'd like but I see them as underrated.
