Recently, in response to a customer's question, I
ran down the list (at least as of the last time my
distributor or I had talked to the various companies)
of where various European producers stood on remastering
their DVD releases in NTSC format for the US.
So,....
DBM, as an experiment, did master a number of titles in NTSC format, to test the assumption that most Europeans had multi-format DVD players. (Incidentally, we bought just about all of these titles, although not all of them are released yet.) Unfortunately, they had larger numbers of
returns and complaints than expected, and went right back to PAL only DVDs. DBM, however, will create an NTSC master of any given DVD title if we will buy the entire production
run and subsidize the additional expense. (This isn't completely out of the question, but we'll be awfully picky about which titles to pursue.

SG Video briefly considered putting out DVDs in DVD-10 format (basically NTSC on one side and PAL on the other), but found the pressing costs prohibitive and wouldn't pursue it.

MultiMedia Verlag was willing to experiment with NTSC DVDs in Europe until they learned that the Sony PS2 units being sold in the EU had PAL-only DVD drives, not the typical multiformat drive you have in computers. That convinced them to stick with PAL releases.

Scala has recently released 6 Pain and 6 SlaveSex titles
on DVD in NTSC format as an experiment. Their reception (read 'sales') will determine if they will release more.

Videorama isn't interested in creating an NTSC master,
particularly one that would include a video's 'wet' scenes.
They might if we paid for the remastering and bought the
entire production run.

Scott,
What is the size of a typical production run? What is the typical number of DVD's that you are able to sell of: an average title vs, a top seller.

How realistic is it for you to be able to purchase a full run plus pay an additional subsidy and still be able to sell a DVD profitably.

Bill asked:

"Scott, What is the size of a typical production run? What is the typical number of DVD's that you are able to sell of: an average title vs, a top seller.

How realistic is it for you to be able to purchase a full run plus pay an additional subsidy and still be able to sell a DVD profitably."

A typical production run for a title that we've paid to
remaster into NTSC is usually 1,000 pieces. That would include both the DVDs and the Nickert boxes (and the boxes
would, in addition, be translated into English, in that
charming non-colloquial way.)

Let me give an example:

We paid DBM to convert 'Sklaven der Faust' from PAL to NTSC,
and in the process, translated the title into "Slaves to the Fist" and the box description into English.

We got 1,000 pieces by sea shipment, and over the last 18 - 24 months (I forget exactly when we released it) have sold a little over 780 copies. It still continues to sell pretty well.

By comparison, we also paid to remaster DBM's "Tantra" into
NTSC, added 4 language tracks (including English), and translated the Nickert box into English.

We got 1,000 pieces (as well), and in 2 years' time have sold just under 500 copies. Despite discounts, and other incentives, it has not sold a single copy in probably 6 months. (Now, we know why that is true; namely, it's a straight title, no fisting, no wet scenes. But that is neither here nor there.)

An average title will sell between 250 and 350 copies in a
year. Many of the DVDs that Dino produced originally as NTSC
format fall into this category, and we've had the flexibility to buy more titles in smaller lots (from a minimum of 50 to about 200 copies in a given shipment.) Among these titles we've actually sold completely out of inventory and had to wait 90 days or more for the next sea shipment.

I will leave out of the equation the set of Dolly Buster compilations. They have an, ahh, enthusiastic fan base, and we sold out of 4 titles completely within a couple of weeks of their release, and just recently got more in from DBM.

In answer to the final question, yes, I think it's realistic to expect to be successful with a DVD title, even given a production run of 1000 pieces and a premium to convert to NTSC. It is realistic *if* we are very careful about choosing titles with content and stars that sell well to our market, and *if* they have compelling covers. I think that we'll just be picking our spots more carefully, and doing far fewer DVDs in any given year.

That may have been waay too much information, but I thought it deserved a thorough answer.

By the way, I learned today that because the American companies are "dumping cheap DVDs on the European market" (as told to me by a contact at DBM), they will be abandoning their characteristic Nickert boxes for the cheaper American style DVD packaging. ( I think that's pretty sad.....)

What exactly is a Nickert box?

and since I don't know a thing about Euro studios...

which studio is usually best?... in terms of quality and quantity?

The best way to describe it, I guess, is that it looks very much like a hardbound book. The cover art is perfect-bound onto the outside of the case, it has a curved spine like a book. When you open the case (the way you'd open a book), the DVD is sitting inside a plastic shell. The video boxes are made the same way, but they are, of course, bigger.
Videorama, DBM, MMV, SG Video, and some others package their videos in this style case, and it's one of the ways to be sure that you have an original tape vs. a bootleg.

I can't honestly tell you which studio is "best" without knowing what you like. Personally, I like Dolly Buster ( a lot), I like DBM's Debora and Family Blue series, I like Videorama's Maximum Perversum series, and I tend to like most stuff directed by Gabriel Pontello (even when he uses the name 'Gabriela Ponti'. By the way, did you know that he did the lighting and some of the writing for many of the early Maximum Perversum titles?) I don't think anyone can touch MMV's Uromania series for combining peeing with sex in an integrated, playful way.

If I knew more about what you like (and forgive me, I'm pretty new here and haven't picked up enough from your other posts to know), I could certainly make better recommendations.

Mike,
You may have heard the Nickert box referred to as a "Clamshell" box. Metro sometimes uses this style box for VHS releases.

Some of the DVD's that come in Nickert boxes also have a "jewel case" (like a CD case) inside of them.

I actually prefer the US style cases because (having a mega changer) I store my DVD's inside the player and keep the cover art in page protectors within loose leaf binder. When the DVD comes in one of these cases (with out the jewel case & jewel case cover art), I can't keep the cover art with all of the other covers.

I really can't answer that with a straight answer, I like a bit of everything, and have seen a bit of everything as well. I am not an expert, but I would like to say I've seen quite a bit of porn in a short time.

(I catch quite a bit of flack for liking she-males, but I like what I like. I looked at some of the boxcovers, didn't find any related to this genre. But that's okay, that's not my only like. I have seen two gay DVDs, both contain fisting, but now I would like to see some fisting in a "straight" DVD.)

Now onto the majority of what I like... Anal, Oral, and Girl/girl

so...

I guess I would say whichever has the best fisting, good quality (clear picture, sound doesn't matter as much, and great content). Anal or vaginal fisting with reasonably good-looking girls.

Girl/girl fisting.

If you need more info, let me know...

Mike,
As far as picture quality is concerned, I have not bought a tape or DVD from Scott where I wouldn't rate the picture quality as excellent. As far as sound is concerned, everything that I have bought from him has been in a language other than English (German I assume), so the sound really doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot.

You probably have two safe ways to go with this. You could try one of the compilation titles that Scott has, which will provide you with a variety of scenes and actresses.

The other way you can go is to purchase something starring someone who you are a fan of. Scott has sections specifically for Daniella Rush and Meridian. He also has a pretty good cast list for most of his titles (be aware that many of the performers use different names on the European titles than they do in the US (Dawn Phoenix = Chrystal Dawn, Elen = Ellen Russo, Meridian = Rosy Bolton, Svetlana and Swedlana as well as Meridian).

I've primarily gone the second way. I've bought Meridian & Elen titles that are not otherwise available in the US. I really don't care whether there is fisting or golden showers or not, so I have always been happy with my selections. It doesn't matter to me that neither of these girls have participated on the receiving end of these acts.

BIGmike,

The best (= older) DBM movies are as yet not available on DVD. In contrast all the good stuff of Videorama is available. I would recommend these Videorama labels:

1.Maximum Perversum (anal/fist/lesbian/piss/dildo)
2.Extrem (similar to MP)
3.Joker (relatively new label)
4.Faust Fucker (mainly fisting)
5.Lesbos Extreme (lesbian hardcore)

As a test you could buy one Videorama DVD, and then my recommendation would be:

Schwanzgeile Fickluder (Maximum Perversum).

This one has it all: nice scenery (castle), pretty girls, soft scenes, hard scenes, anal, fist, piss, dildo, lesbian.

Scott,
Have you looked into distributing other Euro studios such as GGG on NTSC? Their product generates a large anount of interest and could be quite profitable.

Kickass Pictures have managed to release 3 of their titles in the US and they do seem popular. Fisting/pissing films cater for a niche market but everybody (well me a least) like to see plenty of messy facials.

BigMike,
Here what a Nickert case looks like, [ invalid url ] and [ invalid url ].

I much prefer the Amaray case which gives you the option to remove the artwork if you store the dvd in a wallet. Thankfully I have only come across these cases with the DBM titles. It makes for easier shipping also if the box can be ditched and the cover and dvd sent separately. Reduces shipping costs and the chance of Customs interception.

The basic answer is yes, we've talked to a number of other studios; and other the last 18 months or so have gone from distributing only DBM in the US to distributing DBM, Videorama, MMV, SG Video, and Scala. Not every European studio is interested in dealing with a U.S. company.

At one point, we were negotiating with GGG for a couple of their titles. On one, we simply could not negotiate an acceptable deal. On the other, the compliance records we would need were nonexistent. That's just the way the business goes....

As good a recommendation as that is, "Schwanzgeile Fickluder" is only available in PAL format, which may not be an option for bigMike here in the U.S. Also, and admittedly I'm not certain about this, the piss scenes could be edited out of the DVD release.

Scott Kinney,

Okay, I just checked at xxx-imports which Videorama titles are currently available in NTSC format. The following two movies are (perhaps) not quite as strong as Schwanzgeile Fickluder, but still excellent choices:

Schlammfotzen (Extrem) - Nice relaxed atmosphere, pretty girls, anal, piss, vaginal fisting.

Schreie junger Frauen (Maximum Perversum) - There is a weird piss scene which I don't like much; otherwise a strong movie, with a lot of diversity (AF, PF, DF, anal).

Scott, first some criticism then some suggestions, both meant to help.

So you're the ones putting those out! I have to say, that while they may sell ok, I think once people realize (after a couple purchases) that Dolly Buster and Deborah Couer are senior citizens (and pretty gross regardless), they won't come back. The whole "ugly old German ho'" concept originated with those two. (I can say that because I'm part German). :-)

Can you find any titles featuring people in their attractive years, such as the famous ones that starred Helene Chevalier? There's the best known one called "Lesben Faust", and then there's "Party Bizarre" and its sequel "Home Business". Do a keyword search for any of those titles on Google and you'll find screenshots and info. Though I dont know who the distributor is, they are well known titles, shot on video, probably from the early nineties (hard to tell) I'm sure your contacts can tell you. They're attractive women, not the disgusting freak shows. And there's no water sports so you wouldn't need to edit.

One caviat - by the time she made "Fun With Fifi" she was becoming kind of vacant... I'd avoid that one if they try to peddle that to your company.

I like these two as well (I particularly like Raffaela Rizzi in 'Schlammfotzen').

I would also suggest "Schlampen mit der Faust Gefickt",
it's from the Faust Fucker series, stars Meridian, Daniella Rush and Debora Coeur, and has more anal fisting scenes than any other video on my site. Although it got a good review on www.cavr.com; the comment that meant the most to me came from a customer who is an extremely devoted Daniella Rush fan. He called it an excellent video, funny at times, and (here's the important part) he even enjoyed the scenes that Daniella wasn't in...

I'm not sure how to respond to constructive criticism that
includes the phrases "ugly German old ho", and "...can't you find people in their attractive years.."

Oh well. First off, you will make no points with me by calling Dolly Buster a senior citizen. She is 33 years old, and quite attractive in person. (Born Katja-Nora in Prague, October 1969...) [Now, if you want to call Babette Blue a senior citizen, you'll get no argument from me. She is, I believe, approaching 60 years old.]

Second, are you suggesting that Daniella Rush, Meridian, Oceane, Fovea, Ellen Russo, Raffaella Rizzi, etc. are no longer 'in their attractive years'?

Finally, and more on point, we're always in contact with other studios and producers in Europe, attempting to negotiate a distribution contract. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn't.

As regards DVDs specifically the 3 factors that control
what we can or cannot distribute are:
1. Whether the company is even interested in dealing with a US firm at all.
2. Whether they are willing to remaster DVDs in NTSC format.
3. Whether they can meet the documentation requirements of USC 2257.

Taking your questions more or less in order.

About 60 - 70% of the photos in the DBM magazines come from the videos. The picture (and printing quality) is excellent. The pictures are not literally taken from the video, they are shot either during the making of the video, or on the same set with the same performers. They used to do an excellent job of identifying the video that the pictorial represented; title, catalog number, box cover.
It's only done rarely now. (which is really too bad).

Nowadays, the DBM magazines, with the exception of 'Dolly Buster Magazine' are sort of interchangable. It used to be that 'Tornado' magazine only offered pictorials from Tornado videos and looked like a lot of the Tornado videos, for example. But that's not really true anymore. If you removed the cover, I'd challenge anyone to tell the latest 'Tornado' from the latest 'ERO'. Still very well produced, beautiful magazines, mind you, just not as individualistic as they used to be. 'Dolly Buster Magazine'is a little different in that it always includes the latest news clippings, public appearances, etc. for Dolly.

I want to say that 'New Climax' is published by Color Climax, but I'm not 100% certain. Color Climax and Silwa both seem to be re-packaging familiar magazines with new titles and cover styles lately. For example: Silwa used to publish 'Fist Fucking' magazine, now sitting on my desk is a "new" Silwa magazine called "Faust Fick" with really the same pictorials on the inside (Hey, there's Fovea....)

Hope this helps.

A tangential comment: for some reason I also believed Dolly to be considerably older, based on the pictures I have seen on video boxcovers. Maybe it is the heavy makeup or something. However, a number of Web sources corroborate your data: born 31.10.1969 in Prague as Katja Nora Bochnicková.

Also, I discovered Dolly is a practicing Buddhist and has written a couple of books: an autobiographical book called "Alles echt" and a novel "Hard cut".

I find the cover picture of "Alles echt" (All genuine) somewhat ironic in combination with the title:

I'd want to ask what are the aesthetic qualities you're comparing? As I read your question, I just automatically answer 'DBM', but that doesn't mean much unless we're comparing apples to apples.

For example, in other posts on this board regarding DBM, it seemed to me that people who were critical of the studio characterized all of their output as of a piece with the Tornado series (heavily into masks, vinyl, leather and chains). Other lines; like Obsession, Debora, and The Lady Publisher, feature more lingerie, exotic and luxe locations and would be a more direct comparison.

So, what, for you, defines the 'aesthetic quality' of Private?

I had the opportunity to help play host to Dolly and
her husband (Dino Baumberger, yes, that Dino)in Las Vegas for the 2001 AVN show. She was finishing up "Hard Cut", which she described as a psycho-sexual-thriller. She's also quite devoted to her dogs, and when shopping after breakfast one morning, we chanced upon a pet store. We stayed almost an hour while she picked up and played with just about every puppy in the store.

"Alles Echt" is actually a pretty cute book. The editor sent me a copy when it came out in Germany...

Thanks very much for the info.

Returning to PAL vs. NTSC, weren't the early Private DVDs NTSC-only? Which was the first available in PAL?

I play my DVDs on a PC, so the format doesn't matter too much. However, I have the feeling that, all other things be equal, a 50 Hz DVD should look better than a 60Hz one. Could be wrong, though,

A naive techie question: do European producers use different cameras for releases in Europe vs. USA?

I don't usually make flat recommendations without knowing a little bit about what a person likes or dislikes in a video or DVD.

My recommendations to someone who's really into anal fisting would be different from those I'd give to someone who like to see all different kinds of fisting. (And without
driving the point right into the ground, someone who loved lingerie would get a different set of recommendations from
someone who likes leather and latex....)

So, pick a category or type, and let's see what I can come up with....

Scott Kinney, I got the email reply you sent me, but I totally forgot to reply to that.

I have no means of playing PAL formatted DVDs.

So I am mainly interested in NTSC. Unless someone can recommend a good DVD player/television that can play PAL DVDs? This is the way it will be.

I have had bad experiences with VHS, and really don't care for VHS. I will buy a DVD, even without any extras before I buy a VHS, mainly because I like the fact that on DVD, you can go foward without stretching the tape, and there's no problem with tracking.

The thing that amazes me about fisting is that I have seen it in two different gay DVDs, but haven't seen it yet in a straight title.

It's not so much that I want to see the act because it looks pleasurable for the ladies. The reason why is because in the US, video companies edit it out, making it "forbidden" and at the same time desirable to see.

Mike,
Since Scott corresponded with you via e-mail, I can't directly speak to what he told you. But if Scott and you were discussing titles that he sells from his site, they are all NTSC. You don't need PAL equipment to play anything that you buy from Scott.

So, that is the reason why I asked. I wanted to know if there was any DVD player, good and reasonably priced, that can play PAL DVDs? Or if I needed to buy a new television also?

What you actually need is a DVD player that plays PAL DVD's and converts them to NTSC. This way you don't need to buy a PAL capable TV as well. I read about a couple of these a few months ago when I was considering buying one of these. The one that I was looking at was reasonably priced.

I will look to see if I can find some more information for you.

Mike,
The brand name of the converting DVD player that I was looking at is Malata. There are currently 2 (or 3) models from which to choose.

The N966 is their progressive scan model. It had apprently been discontinued and replaced by the N520 (which appears to be due out next Tuesday). However, it appears that the model change is just a cosmetic change, so the 996 & 520 are really the same thing (which is why I couldn't decide to call them separate models or not above). I saw one web site advertising the 520 for ~$280 and another had the 996 for !$370.

If you don't have a High Definition ready TV, you don't need a progressive scan DVD player. Their other model is non-progressive. The N960 appears to cost ~$250.

Take a look at the AV Science forum. Do a search on "Malata" in the DVD & LD Hardware forum. There are a lot of threads discussing the Malatas there.

The prices that I quoted earlier came from these sites:
AV Deals.com

[ invalid url ]

Another site that has been recommended is:
Mind Logic. The have the 996 listed, but they note it as "discontinued" and don't mention the 520 (which may change next week)

I have not purchased anything from any of these sites, so I can not personally vouch for them.

Sorry, I didn't mean to cause such confusion. I just didn't know if you could play PAL DVDs or not....

In addition to the Malata, you might also look into Apex DVD players, there are one or two reasonably priced models that will play PAL and NTSC DVDs. I'd gotten one so that I could play sample titles sent by DBM and MMV.

As far as NTSC DVDs featuring fisting; you'll get the most variety of fisting scenes from "Slaves to the Fist".

Hope this helps.

I'll join this fray: There is an online retailer called Code-Free DVD Players who have a Buyer's Guide F.A.Q. with tons of information about the interaction of the various DVD codes and television formats. This is the best single collection of such information I've seen on-line. Obviously, they also sell code-free, multi-format DVD players (some originally designed that way and others modified by them to be code-free). A very few of the models they sell are also "VCR-friendly" - a term they use to indicate that most DVD copy-protection schemes, including MacroVision, are defeated or bypassed.

Scott Kinney,

Okay. All DBM and Videorama DVD's are a little under 90 minutes, anal oriented (anal/vag/oral/dp), with excellent picture quality and lighting. My preferences:

++ : gorgeous women, anal fisting, dp fisting, cock/fist dp's

+ : pretty women, lingery, diversity, vaginal fisting, dildo, lesbian

= : young women, piss, leather, latex

- : ugly women, gasmasks, manhole penetration

Example: Schlammfotzen has no ++ features, but it scores so well on + points, that I like it a lot. Tornado is doing well in ++, but at the cost of - points.

I bought the modified Sampo DVE-631CF. It has RGB component outputs but does not offer progressive scan. It is totally region-free and handles NTSC/PAL conversion with output to my Sony NTSC television totally automatically. It also has a mod which makes it VCR-friendly (suppresses the MacroVision copy protection). It plays every format I've thrown its way, including DVD-R/RW (the Pioneer/Panasonic/JVC home-brew DVDs); however, it will not play DVD+R/RW (the HP/Sony home-brew versions) formats.

What do you think about the physical quality of the Sampo? Does is appear to be built well? What about the remote?

They have gotten some pretty good reviews for their 34" widescreen HDTV's (I want to get something of this size for my bedroom). However, I have never actually SEEN anything from Sampo. I'm not too big on buying something like this sight unseen much less from a company where I have never seen ANY product from them.

Yeah, I haven't heard too many things about Sampo, I can certainly find their products easily though, online.

So I am also wondering if they are well built (not crap)?

How has yours been working GaySatyr? I mean has it had any problems or does it work fine?

Some Sampo products are sold under the Sharp, Philco and Wharfedale brand names, among others. Check out: Area 450, the Sampo Zone

The DVE-631CF is the only Sampo product I've ever purchased. It appears to be well made and has worked perfectly for the 10 months I've owned it. I'd put it on par with Panasonic's or Sony's mid-level consumer electronics. It does not have the solid build quality of Sony's ES line.

There are some amazing end-user mods that can be made with the Sampo DVE-631CF, including adding your own hard drive (any size that can be formatted with either FAT-16 or FAT-32). I have not tried this, however.

BTW: Sampo have a new model, the DVE-681P, which has progressive scan but I haven't seen a code-free mod for it yet - it appears to be Region 1 only. I'm sure that will change.

As to the remote, it's a remote as good as any - none of them is perfect - it gets the job done. I keep saying that I am going to buy one of those extreme high-end, fully-programmable, multi-unit remotes with the computer interface, but I've never done it.

When you decide to make that jump, go look at Remote Central. They have more information than you can possible imagine.

I love my Pronto and am in the process of trying to set up an "idiot proof" Pronto for a friend of mine.

I've been to that site before. I've seriously considered the Pronto TSU2000 - I bet it could even be programmed to operate some of the wireless remote vibrators on the market - wouldn't that be wild: Press 1 button, have the porn DVD of your choice loaded to your favorite scene and certain parts of your anatomy stimulated - all automatically! Ah, decadence!

Just wanted to thank everyone for some great information on converting DVD players. I have just been using my computer for PAL formated ones.

I just wante dto pass along some info about DVD players that play PAL and NTSC. I found a place called New Orleans Express that has these, I don't know about the quality or anything. But here's a link to their page that has these DVD players.

http://www.noexpress.com/sys-tmpl/regionfreedvds/

The price looks reasonable, it's about 180.00 shipping included.

This is one of the Sampo machines again, specifically the low-end DVE-611.

I've been doing some research: Apparently all Sampo machines enter the USofA as Region 1, MacroVision-enabled machines; however, the eeprom that controls their operation is very easily reprogrammable with a readily available utility and a little ingenuity to include such features as code-free and VCR-friendly operation. You can even do it yourself if you are moderately computer savvy.
