It's struck me over a period of watching porn for 20 + years that there is one person who has stood out amongst all the dross that goes for 'adult entertainment' and who has that rare ability of making consistently high quality adult films, that both get your rocks off but also stand up as fine motion pictures.

Paul Thomas to me seems a maligned figure. Over a period of 15 years + he has directed something like 200 films and amongst them have been the greatest adult flicks that have been made: Justine: Nothing To Hide 2 (1992), Masseuese 2 (1994)Beautifull (1997), Bad Wives (1997), Bobbysox (1990), Awakening (1999), Fade To Black (2001), Heartbreaker (2002) & Heaven's Revenge (2002).

His standard of quality over a prolonged period is amazing to my eyes - the horniest moments in porno for me have been in a PT film: when Tianna gets a vib up her asshole in Justine, when Ashlyn Gere gives Randy West the ride of his life in Masseuese 2, the incredible anal probing that Rebecca Bardux got in Heartbreakers, and the nasty, nasty BJ from Sky in Heaven's Revenge.

And unlike so many 'film-makers' in adult today, PT knows how to make a film narrative and keep a story line going and not be obbessed with anal gapes etc.

I can't think of another adult film maker who can match his output. For a while in the late 1980's/early 1990's, John Leslie was his match when he made such films as 'Oh What A Night! (1990), Bad (1990), and a series of supreme Selena Steele comedies, but like John Stagalino, his films have grown darker and darker, and have leaned too much too sheer gonzo now.

Any aspiring film-maker in porno can learn huge amounts from Thomas who could easily make it in mainstream if he so wished.

Is there a better porno director around? I doubt it!

I actually vote Paul Thomas as one of the worst adult film maker ever. His movies have no heat whatsoever, they're way way too soft!

I think that he simply sucks, I saw couple of his movies, Fade To Black is the last movie of his that I saw, not even, I've seen 5-7 minutes of it and I dont like it. But I bet that theres a bunch of people that do like his stuff, in my opinion it is simply simple.

Big, I love a lot of Thomas movies, and I don't think they're way, way too soft, though they probably are by this forum's standards. You may have had better luck in the "Lighter side" sub-forum. Hmmm, funny, I was watching "Artemisia" just yesterday & it had anal, interracial, orgies... I guess now it's the "lighter side". And I agree with your Leslie statement. I'll go as far as to say that nobody ever made better features. I don't care for his gonzo work either.

The fact that Paul Thomas is a condom-only director is enough for me to avoid him.

I've seen more films by him that I have enjoyed than films by him that I've hated. Then again I've seen six of the over 200 films that he has made so I may not have seen the best cross section of his work.
The films by him that I have enjoyed the most have been Bonnie & Clyde, Fade to Black, House of Sleeping Beauties 2 and Mobster's Wife.
I also liked his work back in the day that he was an actor in adult films before he turned to being a director.
I haven't seen any films by John Leslie only ones he acted in so I can't comment on him.

I think for "couples porn" he probably is one of the better ones. He's never gonna cater for rain-coaters.

He has his ups and downs, but in terms of the cinematic craft, Paul Thomas is definitely one of the best. His movies at least pay better attention to plot, character, dialogue, and direction than 90% of the porn flicks out there. The hardcore may not be as thrilling as some of the nastier gonzo work, but at least he tries to inject pathos and tension in the sexual set-ups.

There is more artistic achievement in BAD WIVES and MARISSA than in the umpteenth edition of UP YOUR ASS. When dealing with the question of excellence in adult film making, it's hard to deny Mr. Thomas his credit. Unfortunately, even the best dramatic porn work is laughable when compared to the mainstream, but that is a whole other topic...

"Justine: Nothing To Hide 2" is a classic.. good story and hardcore.. his other movies were too soft and too slow moving for my taste..

A good story !! That tells me without ever having seen a film of his that I am not interested.

if I want a story, plot development, characterisation I will get a mainstream film.

If I get a porn flick I want wall to wall porn :-) !!

Uh, watch me . . .

I haven't seen all of the titles noted in the preceding posts, but believe me, I suffered through plenty of this dreadful hack's work in the 90's. The hallmarks of PT's body of work are:

1. Sex scenes completely lacking in heat. I'm not complaining about a lack of the currently-popular circus acts, or the usage of condoms. I am talking about scenes in which the performers barely manage to convey that they are awake, let alone an illusion that they are deriving any enjoyment from what their various body parts are engaged in.

2. Horrible -- horrible -- video quality. (Compare a Vivid tape, with its washed-out, unfocused, weird color- balanced appearance, to any contemporaneous tape in which John Leslie, Jack Remy, Alex DeRenzy, Buttman, etc. etc., had a hand -- night and day difference. It wasn't that it wasn't possible for PT to put out a technically proficient product; he simply didn't know how, or didn't want to bother and/or pay to bring in someone who did.)

3. Stupid, often melodramatic plots, which tended to cancel out whatever negligible eroticism that the sex scenes generated.

To me, his body of work reflects a disdain for pornography, and a pretense that he is an actual filmmaker, in the vein of some of the Golden Age directors he worked for when he was just a meatpuppet. When I think about how many performers wasted their careers predominately or exclusively making dreck with this guy (Tori Welles, Jamie Summers, Christy Canyon (the second or third time around), Nikki Dial; the list goes on), it just makes me cringe.

There is a paragraph in Christy Canyon's autobiography wihich perfectly illustrates why I think that Paul Thomas movies are typically crap.

"P.T. told me the viewer preferred teasing and a lot of 'T and A' over the hard-core stuff. I couldn't disagree with him more, but who was I to argue with the man".

I don't know who "the viewer" is, but he sure as hell isn't me.

I can agree with that. I prefer the T&A to the hard hardcore.

But I still don't like PT movies. The plots suck, they are shot on video, and they are low in production values.

I agree. That's what John Stagliano & Jules Jordan do. Paul Thomas never gets to the hard-core. He does the tease and T&A instead of the hard-core, not with it.

If Jules or Buttman made couples features, then those comparisons may be valid. Without the proper context, it's impossible to have an intelligent discussion of "the best director." It's like having to choose between Beethoven, Charlie Parker, John Lennon, Billy Joel, Kurt Cobain, etc. as greatest musical influence.

I think it's arguable that PT is one of the best directors in the "couples" genre. Frankly, I can't really think of another that doesn't carry an equal amount of baggage with him.

But why just because you have a good story does it mean that it can't be a great porno flick?! The best porno around have been those with good stories - 'Misty Beethoven', 'Curse of the Catwoman', 'Mary Mary', 'Barbara Dare' etc....

Should we not be trying to broaden out porn, so you can have a decent story, plot etc combined with outstanding, mindblowing sex? Otherwise is not porn for either doomed to the raincoater brigade?

Harri,

You should try and catch 'Heartbreaker' or 'Heaven's Revenge'. I doubt if you will come across a set of performers who are are more sexually charged then those in PT's films.

Witness Rebecca Bardoux and Mike Horner - she is an ANIMAL! See Sky get Randy Spears off, and Spears fucking the ass off Dascha. Amazing, amazing heat!!!

And certainly the production quality of a PT flick is now vastly superior to anything that Buttman (what a waste of a talented filmmaker incidentally)or Leslie can offer. Good, crisp photography, nothing too weird or showy - just great porno filmmaking

Ok, you're either PT's wife, mother, or sister. Which is it - just kidding.

To me PT represents 80s porn. Too soft. An absolute zero on the nasty scale.

I think Paul Thomas is very, very good at what he does. I also think there is a fair amount of sexual heat in his movies and at times it even gets a little nasty. The target audience is couples and cable, not harsh raincoaters.

As far as quality goes, the production looks very sleek to me.

As much as I love some Thomas flick like "Fade to Black", "If you only knew" or "House of Sleeping Beauties #3" (yes, I'm a little Taylor Hayes biased , I still wouldn't qualify him as the best feature director around, though the quality of his movies has been on a constant up these last years. Some of Patel's points are valid, I agree with the video quality being very poor & the colors weird & washed out, but is it Vivid or Paul Thomas ? Some of his 90's work was indeed bland (notably indeed his Canyon vehicles), but you should give the guy a chance & sample his recent work. In terms of regularity in quality & effort in story-telling, I'd have to give my preference to Veronica Hart though. I was awed by "White Lightning" in terms of pace, performance & story-telling, though the video quality also sometimes leaves something to be desired.

I would agree with that if this was a "let's talk about our favorite Paul Thomas movies"-type thread. But that's not what it is at all. Read the title, and the first post again. Almost any conceivable assertion that someone is "the greatest" anything is going to be controversial, and will draw opposing viewpoints.

it's one thing for people who've seen his movies to critique them. it's another for people who simply associate a name with "couples" movies and feel they need to say for the 111th time that they don't watch couples movies. people are afraid to even talk about features because of those kinds of dismissive posts.

edit to add...

yes, you guys are right the initial post does not lend itself to productive conversation. however the 'too soft' broken record gets old.

I don't think there is even any question about whether PT is a better director than Stagliano and Leslie. Thomas is - with the exception of say Ninn & Hart - in my mind the only adult filmmaker who could cut out the hardcore sex in his film and it would still stand up alongside a lot of the stuff out on cable or released as 'B' movies.

He is a FILMMAKER whilst so many in porno (as a sometime x rated performer in the UK I have some experience of directors!) simply put a camera in the direction of a couple and just film. I am hot on PT because unlike say John Leslie or Buttman himself, he has attempted to SAY something in his films - he has addressed subjects like drink abuse, failed relationships and marriages, the addiction that both users and performers have in porno.

What other fuck director would even attempt any of these subjects.

Finally, as a babe myself, I can always rely on PT to satisfy both my libido and mind!

I don't have a problem with that. Let me just suggest that a good film maker is one who succeeds in making the film say what (s)he wants it to. That being the case, I think there are some excellent gonzo film makers as well.

OMG - I almost peed my pants when I read that!!!! I was quite honored that a certain director stayed around to read a magazine and peek up now and then when I was getting fucked in the ass!

In all seriousness, I'm not sure that Victoria is being quite fair to John Leslie and John Stagliano (He makes the Buttman series, but as Face Dance, Wild Goose Chase, Fashionistas, Buda, etc. show, he is much more than just the Buttman series.)

In sheer terms of technical aspects, when making features, I would have to lean towards my husband, followed by John Leslie, followed by PT.

I also think that most people would be surprised at how much Leslie and Stagliano think about serious issues. They have each come up with numerous ideas that would integrate VERY serious issues into porn movies, but they have each talked themselves out of it, because they realize they are making porn movies, not R-rated mainstream movies.

I simply wish that PT put more effort into his sex scenes, then I believe I would enjoy his movies a lot more.

BTW - my favorite PT movie? Borderline, staring Celeste.

If PT had made nothing other than the great Roxanne Blaze movie, Justine 2-Nothing to Hide, he would belong in the porn directors Pantheon.

One thing unusual in his movies is the quality of the performances. As a former actor himself in the golden age, when they sometimes had to give mainstream type performances, he has gotten some memorable moments out of Celeste, Hyapatia Lee, Nikki Tyler, Raylene and many others. That is if you find personality intriguing and erotic. If you're just interested in fuck holes getting fucked hard, you've got RLD and their windup sex robots.

Unfortunately, PT is also associated with an awful lot of Vivid crap. He's listed, for instance, as the director of Hansel and Gretel, a movie as excrutiatingly bad as story porn can get.

BTW, my main local porn rental emporium rarely stocks new story based porn anymore. I wonder if that is a trend elsewhere as well.

Absolutely. My rental store has stopped stocking story-based features 2 years ago, that's pretty much why I've stopped renting. As for our biggest adult store downtown, the only features they regularly stock is Legend. Unfortunately, I don't like Jerome Tanner. No VCA, no Vivid & almost no Wicked (except the Jenna classics). I can now only buy my features online & can not even rent them beforehand to see if they're worthwhile. And on-line trailers are too sparse.

From the same page in Christy Canyon's biography is an explaination of that:

"P.T. never wasted much footage on one of my sex scenes since I bored him silly. The new Vivid girls had to endure hours in a sex scene if P.T. fancied them. Mine were shot and in the can within a thirty minute time frame."

I can't imagine a director that I think is good having that same attitude when shooting a sex scene.

John Stagliano (Buttman) made the Fashionistas, which beats the production values of any film that I have seen from Paul Thomas, so I'll have to disagree with that statement.

I still couldn't stomach the plot.

What is PT's affection for infidelity?

There was a time several years ago when I would put a PT-made film against ANYBODY, main-stream or steam stream, but THEN PT, as so many others fell into a vat full of "Eye Candy," and, THAT, coupled with Steve Hirsh's "make a buck quick" IDIOTOLOGY, produced what we get now from VIVID and Thomas---disjointed drivel, with which the GREATNESS of contract star Savanna Samson--one of the finest Sexpians EVER, imho, can't save.
Thus, PT rarely develops realistic characters or plots anymore (something, I continue to demand from porn features) and is much more interested in cinematograhy instead of substance (that Eye Candy syndrone) and the downfall of so many adult film directors, again, imho!
Now, if you want MY opinion, the greatest adult film director EVER was Russ Meyer, and despite being restricted to soft core only in his day, made such powerful both mind and penis-grabbing films, that the viewer's imagination could "fill in the gaps"--As for the BEST adult film director TODAY, sing "Oh Canada" for Brad Armstrong, with Michael Raven not far behind---and NO this isn't a Wicked commercial but simple facts, and, of course MY opinion.
And since there's an "outside" chance some "mover and shaker" at Wicked might see this---GET Shyla Stylz, Tory Lane or Rachel Roxxx under contract, or "steal" Savanna Samson, so that she can end her career making REAL porn features!!
