Region coding just sucks ass. I hope the people who came up with it burn long and slow in Hell.
I like a lot of British stuff, which is Region 2. A few things get coded for Region 1 (USA) but the less popular stuff never does. So either I need to get a DVD player that ignores regions, or (I hope) a computer software player that will ignore regions.
I know jack about this subject. Any recommendations? Or am I off track somewhere?

Just use VLC, you can read all regions with it, and it's very good software, and free too!

Harri: I've seen relatively inexpensive region-free DVD players, so that's an option. I just don't want another big piece of hardware taking up space if I can help it. That's why I'm looking at a PC/software route.

^Harri's (and my) point is that you won't necessarily have to shop for a region-free DVD player. It's quite possible the DVD player you already own can be easily tweaked (no tools required) to make it region-free. And on a related note, if/when you do decide to but a new DVD player, consider getting one which you already know can be region hacked (because you researched it before buying).

It has been a while since I did it, but I believe you have the ability in Windows to set the region one time after you install a new player. Set it to zero and you can watch anything that your software can decode. VLC has read everything I've thrown at it, so I second that recommendation.

Gotcha. I looked at the website and see what you're saying. My DVD player (Panasonic DVD-S25) isn't on the list, but I'll keep looking.
Found an interesting article on the subject. I don't feel comfortable trying to flash the DVD in my laptop because if it goes bad, I'm fucked. But maybe I can find a plug-in DVD player that can be flashed.

hhmmm ... regarding VLC ... if i´m not mistaken ... he can play everything but the Drive has to be (!) able to read the disc
