Be prepared for the hard drive to be missing, dead, destroyed, wiped clean, or otherwise non-working. If that's the case, just find a cheap salvaged harddrive and load Linux on it and you're good to go. I have a P4 Linux machine with a 20GB harddrive and 1GB of RAM; it's perfectly capable of doing all tasks I need to do. Of course it's slower than the latest-tech products, but for standard stuff like internet and email and whatnot, it's plenty fast enough. And for processor-intensive tasks like video conversions, just let it run overnight or around the clock. That's the beauty of treating it as a spare/backup. Larger drives weren't that much more. Cleaning them up is a breeze. Literally. Take them outside and blow them out with a Shop Vac. Or that compressed air.
