Does anyone actually use these outdated things? I figure that a company throws them on a DVD that does not have any other extra's. So if there are other extra's that are worth anything, could a company shit can the photo gallery and not have anyone upset?

I agree. What do we need a still photo gallery for when we have the movie?

Surely there are better things to do with that space.

I think that the main shortcoming of the DVD photo galleries as they currently exist is that they are constrained to NTSC resolution. I really don't place too much stock in them. However, I would love to see photo galleries move to a DVD-ROM section of the discs, where they can use traditional jpgs and have more leeway in terms of presenting high resolution pics. I know that those who don't have DVD-ROMs would be out of luck then, but I don't see the purpose of looking at photos on a TV screen anyway. The content of the galleries is a separate issue, but I think that would be a great first step to make photo galleries a truly nice extra--even if it's only useful to those who have computers.

I generally agree about the uselessness of most photo galleries. The only time I appreciate their inclusion is when they use outtakes, production stills, alternate boxcover art, or something unique like that. WILD GOOSE CHASE, for example, has some interesting production photos on the DVD, and the more recent SUNSET STRIPPED gives us a few stereoscopic photos to stare at. (I'll be damned if I can get my eyes to work on them, though.)

I would have to agree as well. In 99% of the DVDs I have seen I could care less in the end about the photo gallery's. The only DVD photo gallery that has ever really impressed me are the ones that are included on the "Private life of" series. These are very profesional looking photographs from the various Private magazines, and they make a nice addition considering the theme of the discs.

The only time I look at the photo gallery is in trying to ID the actresses. If the DVD is properly credited, there is no reason for me to look at the gallery.

I agree with Diesel that photo galleries that show non standard photos are more interesting. Also instead of having them just in a random slide show format I would prefer to have them as part of the Bio section of most disc's so it can help you identify some of the newer performers.

I actually really enjoy a good photo gallery. It helps me recall my favorite points in a movie, and perhaps includes some fun shots of the performers mugging for the camera, moments which were edited out of the main movie. I agree the photo galleries are completely unessential, and no substitute for other extras, but I still like having them included.

The thing with photo galleries is that they take up VERY minimal space on the DVD.

I agree with all of you who say that a DVD should have good cast ID's available without having to resort to going into a slide show-type gallery.

Personally, I enjoy photo galleries a lot, so I will continue to keep them on Evil Angel's discs. If EVERYONE truly hated them (I don't mean some people not caring for them) and NOONE at all liked them, of course I'd reconsider, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

MLyons - that's an excellent idea, although I do think that right now not enough people have DVD-Rom access in order to make that a viable option. But in the future, that's something to think about.

I think what Tricia does at Evil Angel of a page
with the Cast List by Scene is GREAT!

No one else does this.

And she does a fine job in the Bio's of including
a list of film's and other names the actress
uses.

Very nice and very helpful.

I have no problem with photo galleries but about the only reason that I view the standard galleries is for reviewing on the extras on a disc. I like the behind the scenes style photo galleries that some companies include, ie Wicked. I hate when a photo gallery is just about the only extra on a disc as some companies do, ie VCX and Anabolic (sorry Cal). VCX I can more understand as there isn't much for supplimentary material available on the classic films but for companies putting out recent films there should be some sort of supplimentary material in existance for the film.

dvd photo galleries have their pros and cons.

personally, i can appreciate a photo gallery if it has pics of the GIRLS FROM THE FEATURE, in poses that really show off their bodies, with all or some of their clothes still on, before the make-up starts running, etc... this is always good because videos have a tendency of skipping over the part where we can really admire the girl.

this is something i try to keep in mind when doing the galleries for my dvd's. i agree that the hardcore action stills are pretty pointless when you can freeze frame the video.

and yes, the galleries don't take up much space at all.

Personally, I'm pretty much like Flash. I view the photo galleries mainly to get a handle on the extras that are on the DVD.

MLyons, not a bad idea about jpg format, however not too long ago we had a poll of our computer equipment and DVD viewing equipment. A majority of the people that responded here at ADT viewed their DVD on a player, not on their computer. Myself, for example, I have a player in my PC, but I watch 99% of all my DVD's on a dedicated player because of the vastly larger screen that is attached.

Lee-carver, I like your idea. If photo gallery type pics were attached to the bios, rather than be inserted in random order like the do now, I would find that immensly more valuable and useful, and I would probably play through them more often than I do now.

I don't like the random order of most photo galleries. If you could "sort by scene," or "sort by actress," then they might be useful. Kind of looking through an X-rated magazine.

I also liked the gallery in the "Screaming Orgasms" series, but that's only because the camera angle throughout the feature sucked, and the still photos had a better variety to them.
