I read a post on RAME about the technique Private director Pierre Woodman has used to get girls from Eastern European countries to work for him: he would hire them ostensibly for a different kind of job, fly them to an exotic location, and then tell them there's no softcore/modelling work, but instead they have to be in this hardcore film, for a substantially higher fee than originally agreed, or else they have to pay their own way back home.

The same kind of thing is mentioned in Luke Ford's piece on Woodman. This quote is attributed to Frank Thring:

Since there are industry people reading the forum, and there have been many frank discussions about the business, I'd like to know if this is indeed a common practice, and what do you think about it? Also, are the women really naive enough to be deceived by that kind of trick?

This is uncomfortably close to a kind of rape. I can believe Woodman doing something like that: I was uncomfortable watching one of his Casting videos, and haven't watched more than one of them for that reason.

Here's another quote from Thring:

I would think that a numbing cream, whatever it is, is kind of dangerous to use with anal sex. You could get hurt without even noticing it, if there is no pain to warn about it.

I had the chance to interview Pierre Woodman. Yes, he says that the movie will be a softcore, but he doesn't HIJACK the girls from their countries as this article makes you believe.

I am not sure about the distinction you make. I thought the article implied the following sequence of events:

  • Girl is hired to do job A

  • Girl is flown to some exotic location

  • Woodman tells girl there is no job A, and never was: instead she has to do job X, which she may have moral reservations about

  • Girl has a choice of doing job X and ending up with more money than she thought (and probably a sore ass and injured pride), or not getting paid at all, ending up with less money than she started with, and possibly having trouble paying her way back home.

If the girl has no moral reservations about doing XXX, why pretend to hire her for something different in the first place?

What is your impression of Woodman as a person? From what I have seen, he is somewhat coarse and a born bullshitter.

Woodman is french and I'm naturally allergic to frenchmen, so it's hard to be unbiased. But he was nice and polite (as opposed to Metallica's Kirk Hammett, who was so jack-assed during an interview that I just HAD to punch him in the kisser. That's why he had swollen lips when he first played in Brazil, around 89/90).

About the events, here how it goes:

Girl is hired to do job A.
Girl then is invited to make an audition tape with sex (exactly those crappy tapes Private released).
But she's NOT flown anywhere, just to find out that she was bullshitted.

And here I assumed Lars Ulrich to be the biggest jerk in Metallica, or is it just that they're all obnoxious and KH was the nearest one to your fist?

The're all obnoxious and KH was VERY near to my fist. It was a stupidly gratuitous thing; at the end of the press interview, he just got up, looked at my face and said "fuck you!" for no reason at all, out of the blue. And it was also out of the blue that my fist made a close encounter with that potty mouth.

And the security guys were so stunned that I just walked out unharmed from the "scene of the crime".

Wow, you are a dangerous man, Planet.
After I wrote my last post here, I discovered a weakness in the story I quoted: the HIV tests. If the girl is told that the job is something other than hardcore sex, on what pretext would they get the required HIV test from her?(they must require valid HIV tests also in a Woodman production, right?)

Even in your version she is lied to, though. What I wanted to know if this is the normal way these Private chicks get into the business - as naive country girls who get tricked by the big bad pornographer, or are they actually more streetwise.

Then again, I never have liked Woodman's videos, the big Private productions everyone else seems to love. They are too ostentatious, for one thing, like he wants desperately to prove something - to equate class with vulgar displays of wealth. And the plots tend to repeat the same mythology of women as playthings for men of wealth/power.

Planet, did he talk about the ancient secret Chinese anal technique he learned from his grandfather, when you interviewed him? The one which guarantees any woman he sticks his fingers into the orgasm of her life?

Nah. He's shorter than me, plus the security guys were too busy smoking grass by the window to be there on time.

But I wouldn't try a stunt like that with, say, Jean Claude Van Dammit (who's also a gnome) or some guy from WWF.

Yes, they are lied. But I don't believe for a single minute that they're "naive". In fact, I guess that in those countries girls are more liberal when it comes to sex.

Do you know the dutch Seventeen series, with blatantly underaged girls? Their MOTHERS bring em to the filming, so there.

He tried to explain. Very vague. But then I tried it with some girls. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. But the "orgasms of their lives" part is questionable.

You only need to watch one of his "casting couch" videos, such as Superfuckers or Casting X to see Woodman at work. He pretty much hustles the girls, who obviously have little or no idea that he's looking for hardcore talent.

He starts by showing them a copy of Private magazine. "What do you think of that?" Then it's "Would you be willing to do those things?" "What about anal?" "With more than one guy?" When they are unsure or say they have a boyfriend, he applies the pressure like a used car salesman until they say yes. I think it's pretty perverse to show an interview with a girl swearing they won't have sex with a guy because they are in a relationship, and then the next minute, it's Pierre who's fucking her on camera on the same bed she was sitting on when she made the oath. Or Nikki Anderson saying that she's a virgin, and of course, he's the one who rescues her from that and makes her a star.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that it's rape, but to say that all the girls go into it willingly is probably not accurate. After all, the money that is offered is substantial in Eastern European terms, and you rarely see the same girls beyond the few videos that are shot at the same time. And I'm sure there's a lot of "don't worry, no one will ever know" talk going on when the camera isn't rolling.

I can't get worked up about that Woodman casting stuff. It is so obviously fake that it loses any eroticism. The first time you see such a scene, you almost believe that he talked some naive young woman into some act that repelled her. But then, when the pattern and result is exactly the same in movie after movie, you realize that everyone is following a tired old script.
I have watched a few of Woodman's casting, and seen some more in the Superfuckers series. The only interesting aspects are 1)seeing some starlets in a more "natural" setting and 2) I personally enjoy seeing who can speak which languages. I found it really erotic to learn that Demia Moore (a favorite from a few years ago) spoke much better English than Woodman. It was also interesting to learn that My Lee from Sex Therapy 2 was Swedish, since she grew up there after her parents left Hong Kong.

This was the one I saw. I thought her virginity was implausible - although if it was not real, she was pretty good at feigning shock and disgust - but the scene was somewhat in bad taste, and I found the sex repulsive.
At the other extreme, as I recall, in the same video there was also Valy Verdy, who was pretty much matter of fact and cheerful about it all. But she is French, I believe, and was not exactly a spring chicken at the time.

I have read that there is a "deflowering" in just about every Woodman Casting video. That may be the attraction for some segment of porn renters, and Private and Woodman may cater to them by exaggerating the exploitation angle.

I don't think the sexual mores in the countries Woodman scoured for talent (Russia, Latvia, Hungary,...) are exactly liberal. The main attraction for the women would be the chance to make big money, when the folks back home will not know about the shameful aspects of the work.

(On the other hand, Vivienne Clash, who seemed kind of unhappy - and claimed being interested only in the money -when interviewed by an independent documentary crew on a Woodman set, seems to have been fairly active for a couple of years after that, according to IAFD)

Seventeen is another matter, and they use material from different sources. Luke Ford seems to have some random stuff on them as well. (Unfortunately there seems to be no other independent on-line source on the porn business.) In Netherlands or Germany, people probably have different motives than in Russia or other countries fighting their way out of economic collapse.
