I was invited to sit thru an investor briefing not too long ago that was a small company trying to raise capital for a pretty innovative holographic technology. It was about as close as I've seen to practical usage of holographic projection systems and it could easily become the new flavor for "almost there" reality porn. However, both that and Virtual Reality porn are still a ways off. I think the next big trend will still be live actor based and more than likely either computer or TV-based for delivery. CGI just has too long of a production curve right now versus grabbing 2 chicks and a dick and filming a 3-some for the afternoon, capturing it on digital media and posting it for release on the web same day. No way can CGI match that kind of production speed right now, and not likely anytime soon either.

And I think that's something else to consider here. Porn production values, if I'm not mistaken (and I could be!) have gone DOWN, not up. I hope porn actors/actresses make more than they used to for their efforts, but the production and distribution costs of porn have to be cheaper now than they used to be unless the porn industry is seriously inefficient versus the mainstream media industry. Affordable CGI production that's FAST and CHEAP is going to crimp it's adoption in the porn biz, other than perhaps crude CGI such as green-screen sfx and overlays.

I think to predict the next big wave you've got to consider:

1) What buyers want.
2) What technologies are becoming cheap and efficient and likely to see widescale adoption by the consumer and producer segments of the industry.

My guesses:

1) More shock value....likely reality, violence and interactivity....but this is porn, and I don't think adding the smells of ass sex are what's in store, nor do I believe many shy males WANT to be in too close proximity to a beautiful porn starlet...no matter what their fantasy, it can't be too real or it becomes intimidating.

2) Digital-everything, broadband-everywhere, massive storage of content (shared at both client and server levels) and "I want to give it/get it now" pervades the space. Could we see the advent of On-demand private porn where the consumer becomes the director? Imagine a series of hi-def clips filmed of real actors/actresses doing every conceiveable sexual position, with CGI-added effects for costumes/backgrounds/settings and even dialogue/language. Then you log in and create your own porn fantasy, with stars, positions and settings of your choice, on-demand and on-the-fly.

Dunno, but I'd bet the next "big" thing will involve the baseline tech far before we see introductions of new and bleeding-edge tech.

I think current porn, as we know it, will end up becoming mainstream. We're already seeing it now, as mainstream shows become ever more explicit, and as our society's tolerance for sexually explicit material continues to grow. Movies that were R-rated when I was a young would be PG-13 now. Movies that are R-rated now would have been X-rated then. And the stuff I see on pay cable (HBO, Showtime, etc) is eye-popping to me. Even the stuff on free-cable (like Fox Movie Channel) surprises me.

So the current "porn" market, which always caters to what you can't get normally, will continue to push the edge, and that'll be in the direction you're saying: getting into the violent areas.
