I think of one person: a fictional character in one of William Gibson's stories....can't remember the title of the story, can't remember the name of the character even! The character is a rockstar who is physically and mentally damaged, has amputated limb(s), and has to strap on some kind of cybernetic girdle to even stand up...I think at the beginning of the story she's depicted as some kind of freak crawling in garbage, and yet she comes across as nothing but completely beautiful and saintly in the eyes of the narrator, he can't take his eyes away and obsesses over her. And then I think of one of Daniel Clowes one-page pieces (from Eightball?) where he praises the broken beauties that were the loves of his life whose attraction for him came from some sort of damage they wore on their face and body, ie. scar, chipped tooth, etc. I have to find these books and reread them! Anyways, back to the topic. I think whatever is on the outside is not that important. I could watch Angel Dark minus a leg and arm...it'd be still hot as lava, though tinged with a sense of melancholia and transcendence, and they'd be fucking in a different way that's for sure, maybe with a certain gentleness, maybe with a different set of emotions...but Angel Dark's naturalness would not be marred, she would not be dispossessed of those intrinsic qualities in my opinion no matter what happens to her body, and even to her face. It'd still be Angel Dark. And now for some reason I think of those horrible and sad images of Emily Watson at the end of "Breaking the Waves". [Link]
