I did go to some XXX theaters in Washington DC and Alexandria Virginia.It was pretty fun and creepy at the same time I mean being a young 18 year old lad having some old pervert sitting a couple seats away from me and checking me out every few minutes kind of gave me the creeps.When I relocated back to Los Angeles in 1987 I did go to the Pussycat Theater in Santa Monica on several occasions. Hustle (the Burt Reynolds flick) came out Xmas of 1975 so I'm guessing some of the ads at the top are from early 1976. In the midwest, I got to see some of the x-rated flicks at a repretory cinema without having to brave the premiers at our local Fine Arts cinema or The Olympic Drive-In that had the black tarps up and showed xxx flicks. I was lucky enough to see that in the cinema during a small Burt Reynolds "festival" at my local cinema when Boogie Nights came out. I think I would have gone and checked out Boys in the Sand though. Unfortunately, VHS had taken over the world by the time I was old enough to see these movies so I never did see one on the big screen. My mother worked at a theater on a military base during this period and she reckons they used to get a full house each Wednesday night of both men and women whenever they showed the 'blue movie'. These "smoke festivals" that usually had druggie flicks popped up from time to time in my neck of the woods. A pal and I caught one that started at midnight and lasted until 4 in the morning: Reefer Madness, Un Chien Andalou, Mystery of the Leaping Fish, Toke. [Link]

The few movie theatres that still exist aren't screening porno movies anymore. The Mayan is now a nightclub. The Encore Motel still exists, but it's not at sleazy at it used to be. I can't remember all the films but I remember sitting in excitement at 18 years of age watching films in those old sleazy theaters. Everyone would sit a distance from each other, usually there were only about 10 people in the whole audience. I was to ashamed to go to the peep booths at the time because in my city the main peep booth was located right on the corner at one of the busiest intersections in the city and even at 12 midnight it was bumper to bumper traffic. But I think that's because the home video boom was in full swing by then, and people weren't packing the theatres anymore. The time I went to a Pussycat Theatre there was hardly anyone there, and I don't remember noticing the few people there doing anything inappropriate. The times had changed by then. The best part was the movies were shot on film and sometimes looked as good as a mainstream release. The bad part was everything else. You couldn't fast forward, so you sat thru a lot of boring crap. Sometimes the coming attractions was the best part. The voiceovers could be quite comical. Thank goodness when the vcr came into usage. [Link]

The first time was to see Vanessa Del Rio perform live (she was gorgeous, and did this burlesque-style dance that ended with her being fully nude--a spectacular performance. The second time was to see Christy Canyon and that was spectacular as well, real high-energy stuff. As far as I know, there hasn't been a feature dsncer at the Admiral for quite a while--neither has there been any in most of the Illinois clubs. If it wasn't for the EXXXOTICA show there'd be very few porn stars appearing in Illinois at all. Click to expand I remember 2 theatres and a few peep joints all located near State and Van Buren in the loop. The theatres had both strippers and movies. I always preferred the strippers. Porn in those days focused on the guys too much. I was in love with Suzanne McBain but she never got much screen time. It was painful having to sit thru hours of bad porn to see the live girls.
