What are your suggestions for top porn-related reads? What should be avoided like the plague? Where are the gems in the rough (you know, not Jenna Jameson and Ron Jeremy's bestselling tomes)? I'll throw out a couple of my own to start: "Pornology" by Ayn Carrillo-Gailey (a very light, fluffy piece of fiction-based-on-real-events, but funny as heck) "Fast Forward: Confessions Of A Porn Screenwriter" by Eric Spitznagel So- tell me yours! Contains many cover shots and outtakes, interviews with Antonio Passolini, Jane Hamilton(aka Veronica Hart), David Freidman,and delves into Euro and British porn. "Here Comes Harry Reems!" (1975) by Harry Reems. Found this at a used bookstore. A funny read told by the man who defined the male porn star of the 70s, back when $25 a loop was the going rate for male actors. Yes, he was an actor before turning porn. Nowadays, I think I read that he's a born-again Christian. "Porn 101: Eroticism, Pornography, and the First Amendment" (1999) various editors. The 49 essays in this book derive from the 1996 World Conference on Porngraphy. They're written by porn stars, sociologists, sexologists, legal activists, and others. She is in no way connected to porn but she had a lot of sex with a lot of partners over the years. She writes well though perhaps a little dryly of her sexual escapades. Belle Du Jour by Anonymous is the memoir of a high priced English call girl. Originally a blog it's now a cable TV series with Billie Piper as the lead. The writer comes across as a thoughtful, intelligent woman who loves good sex and likes her work as a call girl. She is a writer of unusual grace and style. If you haven't checked out the Bunuel film Belle Du Jour, which inspired the title of the memoir, it is well worth a rental. I'll second shout outs to Linda William's Hardcore, which I thought had some useful insights. Like a lot of academic film writing it's on the dry side. Not as much fun as watching porn. Babylon Blue has wonderful interviews and does a particularly nice job tracing the development of the skin flicks in the 60's and 70's. Pornology, Blue Movie, and Money Shot are all great fun to read. Carly Milne's Naked Ambition was hit and miss but there's some very interesting sections by women who work behind the scenes. [Link] |
