(From Wikipedia:) Canon (fiction): the conceptual material accepted as "official" in a fictional universe's fan base Western canon: the books, music, and art that have been the most influential in shaping Western culture Canon (basic principle): a rule or a body of rules or principles generally established as valid and fundamental in a field of art or philosophy I think it's about time we, as porn consumers and porn aficionados, try to establish a porn canon. I'm not talking about another "which is the hottest porn star at the moment?" discussion, I'm talking about porn history, the evolution of the art of porn. Who are the most brilliant, important and influential directors? Which are the best and most groundbreaking porn flicks? Let's discuss that. I have some suggestions: for the 90's, I think John Stagliano, Pierre Woodman and John Leslie are the greatest directors. For the 00's, I think Jules Jordan, Christoph Clark, Jonni Darko and Michael Stefano are the greatest. For the 10's, I'm not really sure, maybe William H. Nutsack and Mason. What do you think?
Thanks, nice to see some golden era directors, I have seen too little of the classic 80's stuff. Do you have any specific flicks by Spinelli, McCallum and Chinn that you would like to recommend? Edited by - af369 on 11/30/2014 2:19:10 AM
Tinto Brass and Edward Blake also deserve a place in the porn canon, even though they belong to the softcore genre. Tinto Brass is perhaps not even considered softcore - he is more of a director of erotic mainstream film than one of softcore pornography - but I still think he is important.
^ Not just the 80s, but the 70s also.Spinelli: EASY (1978) SEXWORLD (1978) TALK DIRTY TO ME (1980) NOTHING TO HIDE (1981) THE DANCERS (1981) McCallum: 3 AM (1975) V: THE HOT ONE (1978) THE ECSTASY GIRLS (1979) - this is my favourite porn film. HOT RACKETS (1979) GARAGE GIRLS (1980) AMANDA BY NIGHT (1981) Chinn: THE JADE PUSSYCAT (1977) CANDY STRIPERS (1978) PIZZA GIRLS (1979)
I generally think of works as canonical rather than the people who created the works. Moreover, the canon represents a set of influential works that have shaped the subsequent development of the field. So King Lear is part of the western literary canon, but Shakespeare (and his less influential works) are not. So the canon can only be recognized after the work has inspired other works. The incest and older-woman-younger-man tropes have lasted, so Taboo would be a canonical work.
There might also be some works that are canonical by my definition, but which some in this thread would hate. For instance, some of the low budget stuff that was done early in the video era, like the first video about picking up girls and fucking them in a car, might in fact be canonical. I'm not a big Evil Angel fan, but some of Stagliano's early gonzo works might be canonical. I remember really liking "Inside Seka", but I would imagine that it was imitating another earlier Star Showcase. Edited by - cumminglinguist on 11/30/2014 1:49:52 PM
^---Inside Seka, the Annie Sprinkle one and the earliest of the lot-Inside Jennifer Welles-are all directed by Joe Sarno, who always gave directing credit to the star performer of these films. He has also directed an amazing bunch of other soft core and hard core flicks. So add Joe Sarno to the list. ---B{}ne---
Matt Williams of Kink and Intersec fame certainly qualifies. Peter Acworth and PD qualify as well for essentially jump-starting the BDSM genre of porn. For non-kink porn Roy Karch qualifies just for prolifically directing for over three decades (it helps that he was actually talented as a director). John Leslie also was an excellent long-term director. I have to agree with the commenter that cites John Stagliano as he created the gonzo genre.
^^ Sometimes it is a body of work that is canonical. So Shakespeare's histories, as a group, are canonical. (I just re-watched Godfather 2, the Godfather Trilogy was clearly planting seeds on ground that Shakespeare had ploughed.) Given what you said, I would consider his star showcases as a whole canonical.
Thanks for the input everybody. Keep it coming! It is interesting, this whole artist vs body of work question, but I agree - a director can not, as a person, be canonical, however his or her work(s) can be. For example, I don't think John Stagliano's late works are that important (this whole "Stretch class" series - couldn't care less), but "Adventures of Buttman" is (as is "Buttman's Big Butt Euro Babes", to pick his perhaps most accomplished euro-anal flick of the 90's stuff).
My TOP 10 directors would be: 1. Mario Salieri 2. Pierre Woodman 3. Marc Dorcel 4. Jules Jordan 5. John Leslie 6. John Stagliano 7. Jonni Darko 8. Rex Borski 9. Michael Ninn 10. Gregory Dark
You rank Marc Dorcel that high? I think he is a notoriously uneven director. At his best, he was a Pierre Woodman copycat. Maybe a little more glamour, but also a little less sexual heat. Still, he is one of the guys who defined 90's European porn, so I can see why you put him on your top 10.
True, Marc Dorcel started directing many years before Woodman, but he found his signature style in the mid-90's, very much influenced by big budget Private features. Personally, I think Woodman peaked 1995-1996, when he released Cape Town 1&2, Kruger Park, The Tower 1-3, The Gigolo 1&2 and The Pyramid 1-3.

Agree with Spinelli and McCallum aka Gary Graver. Alex De Renzy was the best director of comedies in porn. After that although he made only a few films I'd pick Armand Weston. Radley Metzger and Damiano obviously. Cecil Howard still isn't appreciated to the degree he should be because so many of his films are hard to find although they are starting to appear on VOD but if anyone deserves a blu-ray release, he does. The madmen of porn Zebedy Colt and Shaun Costello. Lots of gems out there too by Michael Zen, Bob Chinn and whoever made Anna Obsessed. Late 80s and 90s I don't think much of it stands up well and has already been forgotten. But then there's John Leslie, who towers over pretty much everyone else except for the best of Paul Thomas during this time. Influence wise you can't deny Stagliano and Andrew Blake, very different approaches but equally worshipful of women in their own ways. The early Rocco really changed the tone of porn in the late 90s and 2000s. Joey Silvera's Kink is an early gonzo/vignette masterpiece. He has been one of the most consistently perverse gonzo directors, there's usually always something interesting in one of his videos. Modern-wise William H and Mason have left almost everyone else in their dust but Belladonna and Manuel have left their mark as both performers and directors. Jake Malone's work at Evil Angel was also often very, very good for the rougher stuff. I think work of Eddie Powell, Kimberly Kane, Bobbi Starr and Dana Vespoli will age well and become influential in time. Edited by - BlackSix on 12/2/2014 6:20:32 AM
If you are looking for influential, then both Gerard Damiano and Jim and Artie Mitchell should be mentioned. Gerard Damiano, not for DMJ which was a great film, but for Deep Throat since that film caused a change in perception of how adult films were seen. Jim and Artie Mitchell, not for Behind the Green Door which was also a great film, but for their fight to show, distribute, create, and own copyrights for their films.
Thanks everybody, some of the directors mentioned here are definitely new to me, I will check them all out. If you can think of a specific film by the directors that you've mentioned which you would like to recommend, that would be extremely appreciated. I keep thinking: why has nobody ever written a book about this? I have seen lots of books about porn, but almost all of them are written from a sociological point of view, the authors being journalists more interested in society and popular culture than by porn itself. They treat the evolution of porn filmmaking pretty shallow, without proper attention to the historical steps in porn aesthetics - the gonzo revolution, the relationship between European and American porn directors in the 90's and the normalization of anal sex, the POV revolution, etc. I mean, I think it is a fascinating history.
^ There are actually a number of books that would fit what you're looking for. Porn Studies has developed exponentially over the last five years. In fact, there is an issue of the journal, Porn Studies coming out next year devoted solely to essays that discuss and appreciate underappreciated individual films. Oh, and I heartily third Cecil Howard. What a fantastic director. The Mitchell Bros. too.
Cecil Howard had some of the best looking films of the 80's.(Firestorm ,Snake Eyes) Henri Pachard did a excellent job on the Taboo American Style series.
Here;s my list of best directors of all-time taken from old posting in this thread . Top 10 directors of all time: . Alex DeRenzy/Rex Borsky (classics) . John Stagliano (created gonzo, discovered brazil) . Brad Armstrong (features) . Michael Ninn (eye candy) . Pierre Woodman (euro) . John Leslie . Joey Silvera (kink) . Jim Powers (extreme/weird/funny, Roger Cormon of porn) . T.B (black/IR for WCP) . Anthony Spinelli - Honorable mention: . Gregory Dark (kink/comedy) . Lee G (black/IR) . Warren Evans (classics) . Nic Andrews (eye candy) . Kovi (euro) . Justin Slayer (black/IR) . Andrew Blake (eye candy) . Robert McCallum (classics) . Henri Pachard (classics) - Worst director of all-time: . Paul Thomas
This will lower the scholarly tone of this thread (my knowledge of the 70's, 80's. and 90's is incomplete). But can I say I always like Mason's films. Love her voice behind the camera.
She is great. I think she will mean a lot to female porn directors in the coming years, and inspire a lot of porn actresses to become directors (which is nothing new of course, but it is not nearly as common as it is for males to take that step). Belladonna's work in the 00's was important, but her films are a little too extreme for most people, whereas Mason makes wonderful mainstream hardcore of incredibly high quality.
Do you think Christopher Alexander deserves a place in the porn canon? Butt Banged Naughty Nurses, Butt Banged Hitchhiking Whores, World Sex Tour, Nasty Nymphos, Gangbang Girl… maybe not really groundbreaking, but often very good.
^ I'd group Alexander in with Bruce Seven. 20 years ago they were shooting porn that resembles the most popular anal theme releases we see today. Here's a few others that crossed my mind. Svetlana/David Frazer-don't know how that arrangement worked, but they are responsible for Bad Girls and a # of other well shot films. There product lacked the edge of some others mentioned here, but it was visually impressive. Paul Norman-had a distinctive dark style (late 80's-90's) Finally, Andrej Lupin has taken over directing the Viv Thomas product. He shoots the sexart.com stuff as well. The guy has talent.
I'm thinking… John Stagliano and "Adventures of Buttman" was groundbreaking in both the gonzo genre and the ass fetish genre, but the anal revolution did not happen there. I've seen some anal in 80's porn, some German stuff and of course Cicciolina, but it was in the early 90's it became a really big thing, not just in Europe (Rocco, Private) but also in American porn. Who do you think pioneered this? Rosebud? Max Hardcore? Bruce Seven (but he seemed slightly more interested in g/g assplay than traditional b/g anal sex)? I'm not sure myself. Seymore Butts' golden years… that was a bit later, wasn't it?

John Stagliano: He's pretty much the father of modern porn. Everyone that shoots nowadays uses at least a little of Stagliano's style. Woodman: One of main directors that built Europorn into a powerhouse. His casting videos enhanced that genre. Rocco: Shoots raw porn. Combines Europorn kinkiness and Stagliano's naturalistic, gonzo style. His movies are always great to watch. Henri Pachard: A porn legend. Made some of the most memorable porn classics of all time. Started The Brat series. One of my all time favorites with Jamie Summers.
The 2 directors I associate with the rise in popularity of anal content are Bruce Seven and Hal Freeman(Caught From Behind). The CFB series was introduced in the early 80's. Bruce Seven was shooting anal scenes with Ginger Lynn (Vivid) in the mid 80's. She was the biggest star in the business at the time. I'll admit having an American prejudice, don't know the history of 70-80's Euro porn well enough to discuss it. It wasn't until the rise of Private that I started really paying attention to it. Never liked Hal Freeman's work, so wouldn't mention him among the greatest directors.

Mason is the modern gonzo director most admired by many in this thread I think. Pachard was an excellent director, his comedies are terrific, particularly SEXCAPADES.
I agree, would only put Michael Ninn higher. matrixxx wrote: My TOP 10 directors would be: 1. Mario Salieri 2. Pierre Woodman 3. Marc Dorcel 4. Jules Jordan 5. John Leslie 6. John Stagliano 7. Jonni Darko 8. Rex Borski 9. Michael Ninn 10. Gregory Dark [/quote]

Fascinating to see the lack of Mason in these lists. Edited by - Canadian_Cindy on 11/19/2015 12:39:08 PM
Wes Emerson, Jim Enright & Viv Thomas are my favorites from the past. Honorable mentions to Mark Stone, Christoph Clark & Brad Armstrong. Worst director - Otto Bauer. Dis-honorable mentions to Robby D & Jordan Septo. In The Middle - Axel Braun, Will Ryder, Mike Quasar & Jonathan Morgan (sometimes good, sometimes crap)
Alex De Renzy/Rex Borsky is my all time favorite. I love how many Rosebud scenes are online now. They used to be so hard to find. I love the picture quality, the angles he used, the fish eye lens, the way girls I normally didn't find that hot somehow looked amazing in his movies. Even his all girl stuff was insanely hot and that genre typically bores me. Glad to see he's been mentioned several times. John Leslie needs to be on the list. Stagliano too.
This is only my opinion(others may think differently), but I don't think that's surprising. Good though she is at what she does, all she primarily does is take four or five scenes that are basically the same (same sex act, same room, same furniture, same lighting etc), and staple them together to get a decent running time. As far as I remember she hasn't done anything involving a plot like for instance Aftermath (brad Armstrong), which involved a big budget and a whole host of stars and a 3+ hour running time. If she did that on a regular basis then yeah she could quite easily be considered one of the best, but until she does I don't think she will.

I suppose if a great director is measured by plot and sets and so forth, I can see your point. Fair enough. I measure directors on the best sex scenes, maybe that makes me unique in that regard. And Mason, in her era, gets career best (or close to career best) performances from many girls she works with. That is what makes her great to me.
^ You are definitely not unique in that regard. Mason's ability to draw out incendiary performances from her stars is unparalleled in my opinion. Furthermore, the editing of her tease sequences, music selection, the composition of her scenes, and attention to detail when it comes to things like wardrobe and make-up are beyond reproach. As for the lack of variation in the locations she uses, if the alternative is using sets that look like sets à la a lot of the features I've seen, I'd rather she stick with real locations. Although I would note that compared to a lot of other gonzo directors she does vary up her locations a bit more. In addition to the recurrent mansion settings we see in most of her films, she often films in locations like warehouses, aircraft hangars, and roller rinks. Meanwhile, I judge a director depending on what the genre of porn is. It seems pretty silly to me to exclude Mason--one of the best gonzo directors ever--because she doesn't include plots and scripts. That's like dismissing Neil LaBute because he doesn't have any explosions or decapitations in his films. There are different kinds of porn. When judging the quality of a director, the ability to shoot a sex scene well, though, surely comes near (or at) the top of requirements.
