Hi Everyone,
Would like to start a discussion on Economics of the porn Industry.I would like to write my view on what i was reading on the articles.Would like to get more views and if any one has more statistics to share it will be interesting. What i was reading on many articles is many IT Companies, Telecom Companies figured out that if they stay focused onto US and Europe Market, Either the growth will slow down or they may not be able to grow after certain level. There will be new competitors which will eat up the market share.
Same with Hollywood movie Industry, Hollywood movie Industry started giving the Movie dubbing rights to Asian countries to cover the Asian Market and extend the growth. Movie Industry got affected badly with file sharing and piracy and Main stream Movie maker's now these days releasing 600-800 prints all over the world and controlling the piracy and keeping watch on file sharing for one -two months, fill up the money bags quickly. Now , In economical crisis, when US and Europe are affected there will be some impact on Asia as well but will be much lesser on rest of the asian countries except china.China economy does depends a lot on US Market. Main stream Movie Maker's coming up with new ideas of creating 3D to attract the audience to theaters. Similar step was taken by one of the big porn companies in porn Industry , Ultra Magnum to create a Virtual Reality 3d porn. First of its kind and recognized by AVN.
These statistics i found sometime back.
89% of porn is created in United States $ 2.84 billion in revenue is generated from U.S. porn sites in 2006 . $ 89/second porn every minute is spent,72% of porn viewers are men,260 new porn sites go online every day (Source -
by Good Magazine, which shows a series of statistics about the industry of pornography )
I don't have the recent statistics, if anyone has it please share.I believe the above statistics may not be true in current economical situation.
So For Porn Industry the Market which is open is Middle east onwards excluding Japan. Japan has its own big porn industry and that market segment cannot be addressed because of Language. The challenge is Middle east onwards , there is no porn Industry presence and its illegal. Now question is , What IT Companies/Telecom companies doing and what holly wood movie makers doing for some of the big releases,if it can be applicable to Porn Industry as well? Is that going to help the porn Industry to open new business avenues and new area's to explore untouched market segment?
All views are welcome and if someone has statistics to share , it will be great.

Another issue what i see in extending to Middle east + asian markets for Porn Industry is the problem of "LOCALIZATION". If Microsoft/IBM/Oracle wants to sell in China, Japan,Korea,India etc.. They have to provide support for local languages. Same goes for Mobile Phones, they have to provide support for local languages. Even the keyboard layouts designed in most of the asian countries are not in english. when Hollywood Mainstream Movies company producer wanted to address the asian market segment, they knew that they have to address the problem of localization. Hollywood movies are usually big budget movies and they have money for addressing problem of localization. Harry potter all parts, spiderman , Iron Man almost all the famous Hollywood movies got dubbed in Mandarin language for china, for India they dubbed it in Hindi and released it.Hollywood movie makers are able extra Money by addressing this market.
For Porn Industry, (I am specifically talking about movies here with story line) it may be a bit of challenge to address the problem of localization. Most of the Asian countries, porn DVD Shipment may not be allowed as well so for selling they have to use clips download mechanism.

I can address Localization as far as the adult industry goes. I think it has little factor when distributing it to foreign countries. Many adult Japanese films are not in English yet there is a demand to view the product in the USA. I also do not care much about dialogue when viewing hardcore films. I would not mind viewing a European release in a foreign language if the action is hot. Some of the best hardcore films I have viewed were loops from French, German and Danish/Scandinavian films from the 70s. Usually they provide soundtracks and little to no dialogue when distributing it overseas.
Now if you are mentioning something about Localization of Hollywood films that is a different story. Of course they would need to provide subtitles or voice dubbing in the native language where it is distributed.

Yes I agree with you that just for a hardcore scene the language doesn't matter because it is just a hardcore shoot. I do watch japanese, Italian and french mainstream as well as porn as well. Love japanese and Italian porn but for some of the story based porn movies where there is a story and sex scene comes as a part of story, I do find the problem of language. You are right just a hardcore scene which ends at cumshot, the language may not be necessary. For some of the andy casanova movies i still find it difficult to get even english subtitles. Some of the classics from Tinto Brass are amazing but i believe the localization for these movies could get more more money for the producers.

yes i believe , Porn Making companies may be loosing money without addressing a problem of Localization. Another example which i could think of is a 3D Porn movie made in Hong Kong with name "sex and zen". The movie is excellent and it has english subtitles too but the movie was made in cantonese language and mandarin. So the only market which this movie could address was china and Hong Kong. Many people even don't know about this movie. The quality of 3D is excellent and story of movie is also nice.If the producers who spent so much money on making this kind of quality movie addressed this problem of localization, it may have got many more viewers all across the world.

what if they spend the money on hiring people to do the english dubbing and lose money paying the voice actors because people in the other countries didnt buy the product?

I gave example of holly wood Mainstream movies and many other Industries doing Localization and getting a success in expanding business in Asia. Business is all about studying the Market dynamics and Reading statistics correctly.Business People always see the statistics, demand and new area's of business to expand.Good business man always willing to take calculated risks and if there is a success already which can be followed, the risk is very minimum for failure.
All the Other Industries did it except Porn.So question is, if it can help to get some boost to Industry? If Porn Producer's get more money then they can create more quality movies. If they get less then next movie quality also may go down.
Dubbing studio's with the current technology and the amount of free software's we have available is very easy these days and the cost of dubbing a movie will be almost 0.1% of making a 3D High quality movie like sex and zen.In fact many voice over dubbing studio's do it online.
I believe ,Adding a additional 0.1% cost for Localization for a big budget movie and expanding the business into Asia may help for porn Industry in current economical situation.
Would like to know from senior members and senior moderator's on this forum if they have current statistics which can be shared.

but if porn is illegal in those countries, then why spend money on them? im sure they make enough money in europe and the us, that putting content out in asja will either make them break even or lose money. porn is in a bad shape as it is and dubbing voices wont do much to help. you are probably a minority that care about what is said in a porn film. porn has and always will be about the sex.

Thanks for expressing your views ashli.
I understand you prefer just hardcore sex scenes and may not like story based movies.Porn classics are still the all time best seller titles on many DVD Sites if you check, so there is a majority of people who understand the value of golden porn classics of 70's and story line porn movies. Even on porn dvd selling sites you can find a separate category which is plot based/story based movies. Some of the movies from Vivid/private which are plot based are still a best seller. In fact i checked the profile of some of the Moderator's on this forum who understand the value of classic's, story based movies. So i believe some of the senior members and moderator's on this forum having a taste for movies will have interesting views to share with everyone on how the porn Industry market can be extended.
Now coming to the point ,its illegal in middle east onwards in many countries. In US and Europe ,we have too many porn Making companies. There is so much of variety on all kind of porn movies. If you see the statistics which i mentioned in first post and amount of porn made in US,and how a small studio's and new websites coming up everyday to eat the market share of Big companies , It has become a cut throat business. Now with file sharing/piracy hit and new small time studio's popping up everyday , the margins are reducing and that is why many people closing down the business in porn. If you have something available everywhere in the country and there is plenty of it, people have choices and there will be a point when saturation comes in, many people get to loose the interest. If Asian countries don't have the good quality porn , they will be looking and searching for it . There is a big chance of getting more business from continent where people searching for it.Shooting porn In many countries in asia is illegal, in fact there is no porn industry excluding japan.Does it mean that content can't be produced for the asian countries similar to what Hollywood movie makers Did?Does it mean it can't be sold as a downloadable clips on Internet? I believe it can be done and if people like to read statistics / study demand, goggle may help in finding the posts on forums and looking at if it is a new business opportunity waiting for the porn industry.
I am specifically talking about movies here , not hardcore sex scene's.

i do like story based scenes. im a huge fan of brazzer because of this. ive asked many times for kg to do plot based scenes. i have seen quite a few 80s films and enjoyed them. also in the 90s with jenna, ive always thought they never made story films like they used too.
if dubbing would be such a big source of income for companies, then why hasnt it been done already? dvds have been around for about 15 years, so im sure the technology is there to do it.

Good to know ashlii that you like story based porn movies as well. I have seen some brazer's porn clips and i do like some of the pornstars like diamond foxx but i have not seen any story based movies which i could relate to 70's-80's Classics from brazers.I have seen only the clips where the story line has 5-10 mins of dialouges and sex scene of 20 minutes which ends at cum shot and clip ends. If you have seen any which has a good story line ,please suggest me some names so i can also buy and watch. I like story based porn movies which doesn't end at a cum shot.
Why Porn Industry has not done it?I don't know. There is a big market for dubbed movies. If anyone is watching a japaense porn movie and the actors are talking in japanese, I am sure the person who don't understand the japanese will fast forward or skip that portion and jump to sex scene . If the Japanese movie dubbed in english and actors are talking and you are able to understand the dialouges then i am sure the viewing experience of the movie will be different and the fast forward button may not not be used :) .There is a strong demand for english subtitles for japanese porn movies as well.
It may be a reason why in this file sharing and piracy problems hollywood and bollywood movies still managed to find the ways and means to make money but porn industry really got a hit.
For reading the statistics and Market research on the movie industry, tv channels and how big can be a dubbing industry, people may want to read a book "INTELLACTUAL PROPERTY AND COMPETITIVE STRATEGIES IN THE 21ST CENTURY".
This book mentions "UP TO THE END OF 2000, an average of 126 films annually, and imported and dubbed more than 800 fOreign films. You can read more on this book how big are the market for movie industry is discussed in this book.India also the dubbed movie market is very huge and infact dubbing of hollywood movies really got bollywood industry worried as hollywood movies also gaining market share and getting big hits. Its a good healthy competition which forced people to create a quality movies which can bring the audience into theatre. With A good competition in the movie industry, the one who gets benefited is the viewers.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bollywood
The link above on wikipedia shows how popular bollywood movies are and in what all part of world. Some extract from the link above is mentioned below.
EXTRACT
The awareness of Hindi cinema is substantial in the United Kingdom,[98] where they frequently enter the UK top ten. Many films, such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) have been set in London. Bollywood is also appreciated in France, Germany, the Netherlands,[99] and the Scandinavian countries. Various Bollywood movies are dubbed in German and shown on the German television channel RTL II on a regular basis.[100]
Bollywood films are particularly popular in the former Soviet Union. Bollywood films have been dubbed into Russian, and shown in prominent theatres such as Mosfilm and Lenfilm.
Bollywood has experienced a marked growth in revenue in North American markets, and is particularly popular amongst the South Asian communities in large cities as Chicago, Toronto and New York City.[37] Yash Raj Films, one of India's largest production houses and distributors, reported in September 2005 that Bollywood films in the United States earn around $100 million a year through theater screenings, video sales and the sale of movie soundtracks.[37] In other words, films from India do more business in the United States than films from any other non-English speaking country.[37] Numerous films in the mid-1990s and onwards have been largely, or entirely, shot in New York, Los Angeles, Vancouver and Toronto. Bollywood's immersion in the traditional Hollywood domain was further tied with such films as The Guru (2002) and Marigold: An Adventure in India (2007) trying to popularise the Bollywood-theme for Hollywood.

I shared some statistics which i have.May be Porn Industry can think of dubbing some of the existing classic movies and see if they can make the money with the existing movies what they have in stock on which they invested heavily.
What i can say is with free softwares like audacity, voicepad etc...dubbing studio's are easy. Yes finding people who know multiple languages, yes it is a bit challenge and it is a skill for which people get paid good amount of money.

First off one needs to get real about how much porn made during its boom years, this Forbes article takes apart a lot of the myths about that. This should teach us to be more suspicious about the profit claims for internet porn these days as well.
Here's a more recent article about how much of the internet is actually for porn.

Thanks.really good information and thanks for sharing some nice statistics with everyone.
.So now the question is how the porn companies are surviving? There are so many companies and if these figures are true, many people doing porn business to pay every day bills :) .
One interesting point which was mentioned about live jasmine.com, really made me laugh.
Actually many adult tube sites have this live jasmine.com added as a pop up window opener. If you open the tube sites, this site automatically gets opened in background and sometimes people forget to close and continue watching tube video's. So i believe the best hit rate may have been calculated based on the pop up window opener added onto tube sites.
It is nice detailed article and thanks for sharing the information. The article i believe is quite out of date even older then goods magazine figures mentioned in the first post. the article date for forbes article is 2001/05/25, the second article date is quite latest 2011/09/07.
Any information you have on dubbing, localization of porn movies?any statistics which you can share with us.

Yeah, I noticed that Livejasmin thing right away, shows the difficulties of academic research.
Actually I would think it would be cheaper to subtitle foreign porn than dub. Dubbing requires voice actors, recording studios, etc whereas even the lowliest exploitation flick can be fansubbed on the net these days.

Subtitles may be a bit easier thing to do but that still requires understanding of two languages. The viewing experience will be different if i have to read the subtitles while watching it OR if the dubbing is done. If dubbing is done, viewers can concentrate on movie more instead of reading subtitles.
The links which you shared do contain lot of good information and i hope porn making companies read this thread and find the ways to expand business and make more money. There are two ways to do a business, study the market and see what is in demand and what can get you more money and after studying the market statistics create a product. This is one way of creating products and doing business.
The other way is "Late Sir Steve Jobs way" (last CEO of Apple) . Create such a excellent product for which market demands get generated automatically. Steve Jobs believe was, customer's don't know what they want unless you give them something which they have never seen before and surprise them completely with your product.
Marketing, sales and Business theories are applicable with bit of change to almost all the business.Porn Industry may be missing some business management people :) .

I found another interesting article based on google analyst report which can be trusted because google can tracks the ip address of countries and city locations. Google is where almost everyone does the search and this report should be more accurate.
According to the report "Interestingly, eight Indian cities were figured in the list of top 10 cities in the world Googling sex. "
So The basics of sales which porn industry has to follow now. Supply should be in the are of demand to grow the business.
check the link below for google analyst report and some interesting facts which porn making companies may be interested in.

Found a Interesting website which shows up the statistics of popularity and how many hits actually the website gets. This can be a good Information for the porn production companies to find out where to put the video's for sale. The name of website which i found is updowner.com and they show the statistics of the websites popularity, ranking and how they are loosing or gaining the members/visitors.
Just checked with three websites selling DVD's and got some interesting figures.I am not sure how accurate this information is this, but even if it is 70% true also then it make sense for porn production companies to make a use of it.Would like to know if anyone checked the figures before and views of senior members on forum.
Some e.g. which i checked.
adultdvdempire.com is visited by 190,600 global Interrs every month but they lost 50,300 in last one year. They got a awaard from AVN this year as well for best retail store.
clips4sale.com is visited by 538,400 global Interrs every month but they lost 142,500 in last one year, but still more then any site selling clips. They got award from AVN as well.
adultdvdnow.com is visited by 4,800 global Interrs every month, this figure is hard to believe because they do support paypal transactions.
I checked some porn making studios also who sell stuff from own site as well.
vivid.com is visited by 150,800 global Interrs every month and they are +16,800 from last year.
brazzers.com is visited by 2,176,711 global Interrs every month but they lost big time.they lost -928,100 users in 360 days.
killergram.com is visited by 77,500 global Interrs every month and they have lost 33,500 from last year.
This website gives some interesting statistics which porn production companies can make a use of and see if they can do things differently to get more business. Doing business based on data statistics is the way intelligent people do business.

I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned Alexa.com. Here's the Alexa page for my favorite porn site, Kink.com
They are currently ranked the 3878th most visited site in the US.

Thanks for reply and sharing information about kink.com. Yes , you are right the hit rate of Kink.com is also quite high which is much better then adultdvdempire.com but lower then clips4sale.com .
what i have Noticed the statistics on Updowner.com changes almost every month and gets updated with latest figures. I checked the Kink.com ranking on updowner.com.
Kink.com stats:-
The site is on 24,534th position in our Fastest dropping sites Ranking.
30 days change: -16,800 users
90 days change: -25,100 users
360 days change: -73,300 users
kink.com is visited by 391,800 global Interrs every month, Another site which is in growing site list is Kinkbomb.com and they do business similar to clips4sale and they have got quite a lot of variety stores. kinkbomb.com also offer's higher pay rates in comparison to other sites and allow High quality HD Large file size uploads.
The site is on 145,778th position in our Fastest growing sites Ranking.
30 days change: +2,500 users
90 days change: +5,700 users
360 days change: -6,700 users
kinkbomb.com is visited by 28,700 global Interrs every month.
what i can see based on the dropping hit count of DVD Selling sites and increasing hit count of clips selling site may be the reason, for DVD there is additional cost of shipment and it takes few days to receive it. With good Internet speed, the high quality clips can be downloaded immediately. That may be one of the reason why clips4sale.com has got such a high hit rate of "538,400 user every month" which is almost 4 times of adultdvdempire.com.

^I'd like to point out that just because a site gets a lot of traffic doesn't mean that they make great profits. I visit the Kink sites a couple of times per week to see what new updates they have and I usually join a few of the sites every few months. I may visit clips4sale on a regular basis but I will never buy a scene from them because their prices are just too high.

Thanks for expressing your opinion Pat. What i believe that is the simplest way to see the popularity of the website. No website will disclose how much profit they are making. So simple logic based on business theory is , In any shop if more customer's comes in then 95% chance that sales will always be higher. If less customer comes into the shop then definitely the sale cannot be higher. If we compare the Hit rate of Kink.com and clips4sale.com then the difference is not a small difference per month. The difference between hit rate is 200,000 Plus per month. So in a year clips4sale gets 2400000 more customer's visiting stores in comparison to Kink.com.
So for porn production companies , they should target both these sites for selling. Selling through these websites will help porn production companies to reduce administrative overheads by selling through them. So porn production companies can save money which they spend on operations and can utilize it to make better quality movies.
So kink.com and clips4sale.com are equally good and porn production companies should consider both the options, whichever gives them higher margin. updowner.com does give the ranking listed as fastest dropping or fastest growing site as well.

One more thing i noticed, kink.com doesn't give the list of stores from 1-20 ,which is the top most profit making store and which is the number #1 store on the site. Clips4sale.com does lists the store which is on top 20 always and most profitable stores. On Clips4sale ,which has got most number of visits, I noticed Rachel Steele's store on number 1 position from almost more then a year and jodi west most of the time reaches on second position. This ranking may give the idea on who is making most money from that website but i couldn't find any information on web where clips4sale has disclosed how much money they are making.
I haven't explored kink.com much, but i believe the content available on clips4sale and kink.com is quite different. That may be the reason for difference in price.

How does Kinkbomb stay in business?
Are there really that many dudes into fake femdom and who like to pay "tributes" to girls pretending to be mistresses?

Thanks hoya for participating in this discussion. Kinkbomb.com i believe is not getting too many hits but they are in the list of top growing websites. One of the reason why many people may be opening stores on kinkbomb.com because they charge less commission percentage and porn studio's get paid higher. This way they are attracting more studio's to open store by offering them higher pay rate and less commission.
Number of visitors for kinkbomb.com is quite low in comparison to kink.com and clips4sale.com.

This is the top porn stars list i found hotmovies.com, which is the most famous VOD Site and having 2 million plus members .
http://hotmoviesblog.com/files/2011/09/top_porn_stars-August.pdf
Top 5 porn stars based on the list of pages views by visitors and member. 494 porn stars listed, this is not the AVN's Own listing of top porn star's but it is based on popularity and i guess the amount of money the porn stars make from this website.
Top 5:-
1.)Lela Star
2.)Angelina Crow
3.)Nina Hartley
4.)Rachel Steele
5.)Bree Olson
Does anyone know which porn star ranking is based on popularity and is real?

I got some more information , would like to know if someone has more information on commission paid by dvd selling websites to porn studio's . Many DVD Selling websites like adultdvdempire, cduniverse etc.. actually offer very low commission and returns to porn production companies. porn production companies get 20-30% of the cost of each sale.
adultdvdmarketplace gives better return by taking only 15 % commission and 85% to porn production companies. The dvd shipment cost on adultdvdmarketplace seems to be lowest.
adultdvdempire and adultdvdnow support paypal transactions, that is one of the advantage they have.
clips4sale works on 60-40 i.e. porn production companies will get 60% of every sales. Kink bomb has better returns for porn production companies but lower number of visitors every month.
for better returns, companies should look for ,who offers the higher return to them and which site got more number of visitors. these two criteria , companies should consider before they put DVD/Clips on sale.
If any one has more information on dvd selling websites offering higher returns to companies and having more number of visitors. please share.

^Aren't those sites like adultdvdempire simply retailers? They buy DVDs in bulk from the studio (or from distributors who buy from the studio) for a wholesale price, and sell those DVDs to individual customers at a retail price. It's not really a commission in the normal sense. It's wholesaling and retailing and everyone makes a bit of profit along the way.

Thanks for joining the discussion Ninja and expressing your view. Distributor and retailers terms from porn industry are slowly disappearing with porn industry getting badly affected by piracy and file sharing. what i have noticed on different dvd selling websites, many of the adult dvd selling websites they allow the porn studio's to create login, open stores and upload dvd's for sale. Most of the porn studio's handling the distribution of the dvd on internet themselves, as the volume of order is not huge as it used to be around 10 yrs back. Clips selling business gives more returns as there is no dvd shipment cost involved, you can order, download and watch immediately. of course there is percentage of viewers who like to order dvd and watch it on big television screen on computer. The DVD Selling sites business is impacted by clips selling stores. Number of visitors to clips selling website and dvd selling website tells the story.
clips selling stores has not limited to selling only to porn studio's but they have opened it up to everyone. On Clips selling websites you can see so much variety which dvd selling websites can never have. Here the small time porn makers eating up the share of big production studios.
Most of the porn studio's prefer to sell the dvd/clips from own site instead of passing it to dvd selling websites because they loose the margin.
If porn studio's can get more share of money they will be able to create more quality movies. With distributor/retail model, they have less margin to play with. Now porn is not a volume business where you upload on 100 over retail stores and expect money flowing from everywhere. the moment dvd is released, it goes on some or other file share which impact the porn studio's .
so my point is if , porn studio's release the clips/dvd's onto those websites where they see more traffic and which provide them higher margin then they will be able to make more money. this way porn studio's will give the viewers more quality movies.

Check the statistics on link above.this site support PayPal transactions and shipment cost is much lower then any other website.no doubt why it is fastest growing site with very positive results.i guess other DVD selling websites specially adultdvdempire.com has got a tough competition now.they are offering very good deal for buyers and sellers as well.no distributors, sell direct and make maximum profits.porn production studios have a better option for selling now.

As a social democrat, I feel conflicted about porno. On the one hand, I fully support a woman's right to choose. On the other hand, the business model is clearly built on the exploitation of workers. Unionization would help make the industry more socially acceptable.

^Maybe it's just me but the days when unions were there for the benefit of employees are long gone. These days unions are in many ways more harmful than the most companies. Name me one company or industry where unions still help the employees. What I mostly see are unions making millions of money on the backs of the employees and offering very little in exchange except that their hard positions often equal a closure of whichever company they were in and the employee who was not that unhappy with his company is now without a job.

The very existence of unions, even slightly crooked ones, helps to protect workers. The situation of the 99% would be so much worse without them. Of course, porn workers, who live on the fringes of society would not be able to find a union to represent them, so the union they would form would be a model of democratic accountability.
