They're listed as "sex education" films, and are displayed right alongside mainstream films. The box covers showed breasts and pubic hair. I didn't see any hardcore DVD shops, however, although that doesn't mean they don't exist. All the sex shops I found--and there were many--only sold toys. Often the women on the street who sell DVDs have a stash of pirated porn tucked away in their coat pockets as well. As for the internet, as a rule one should never consult any Chinese website while at work: even if you're looking for something totally safe, like sports or fashion, you're likely to find ad links with women who are either nude or in suggestive poses somewhere on the page. If a co-worker walks by, you could be in trouble. (The links lead to porn sites.) I don't know how easy it is to access these sites in China, but the fact that they exist testifies to their popularity. Although porn is officially banned in China, there was an article in the Economist a while back (in one of their Christmas issues) discussing how the CCP is becoming more lax for pragmatic reasons (porn helps curb infidelity and save marriages). And, of course, they can't police everything on the internet: if protesters can use the internet to organize, then it follows that porn sites can slip through the censors as well. [Link] |
