[Long-winded musings incoming...]

I've always had a fascination with older pornography because of its spontaneity and unique character. It may not have been as refined as the material we take for granted today, but there was a sense of genuine humanity and sexual curiosity that got lost somewhere along the way. Everything was still new back then, or at least it felt that way, and I think the porn of the 70s in particular reflected the public curiosity associated with the Sexual Revolution. It felt less manufactured than the stuff we have today. You really had a sense that the people behind it were exploring their sexuality. And sure, it was still ultimately a product, and there were aspects of the industry in those days which had even less soul than the modern production assembly line (for example, the heavy influence of the mafia and organized crime), but there's still something there which simply doesn't exist in 99% of today's porn.

The structure of those old films was less rigid and codified than modern pornography, and did not necessarily contain "scenes" as we understand them now. They were more like moments in time, captured on celluloid organically as they unfolded. The stories were trite and threadbare, the acting was seldom convincing, and the lighting and camera work did not come anywhere near the level of sophistication we take for granted today, but if you can see past those artifacts of age, there is still a perceptible difference in the chemistry between the performers, the trepidation about exposing their sexuality on camera, the spontaneity afforded by the lack of structure, and many other things. There's something to be learned from all of that; I am definitely not advocating for a return to the production style of the 70s, because the industry has matured and we've learned so much since then, but the general ethos of sexual curiosity and exploration can still be inspiring if you have the vision to see how it could be applied to the industry and production standards of the modern day. Some directors have found a way to do that. Rocco's older films do a great job of capturing that sense of genuine sexuality and spontaneity. They feel real and you can actually believe the emotions of the performers. Stagliano's Buttman series touched upon this as well, with the added twist of the "gonzo" style where Buttman himself became almost like a participant in the sex from his position behind the camera. (People forget that "gonzo" refers not simply to a style of camera operation, but more generally to a sense that the camera operator is an active participant in the action, where his presence is felt and acknowledged by the performers, his movements and framing choices dictate the flow of the sex, etc., almost like he's another performer, just one who uses the camera as a sexual instrument instead of his private parts.)

Anyway, I've been compiling these movies for my own enjoyment for many years now, so I thought I'd give something back. I'm still putting it all together, but it's coming, so stay tuned. I expect that at least a couple of these vintage gapes will surprise you with how ahead of their time they were! This will be a curated collection, so we'll be jumping around in time as it serves my narrative and looking at the scenes which I feel are most interesting. It will certainly not aim to be a comprehensive guide. Still, I'm having a lot of fun putting it together, and hopefully you'll get something out of it.
