Fleshbot reports:
We've all heard how porn is recession proof, how porn companies are posting record profits while the rest of the world lays off half their staff. But is that really the truth?
An anonymous tip just received by the Fleshbot staff indicates that things might not be so rosy—at least not for one company:
I just got off the phone with [a Naughty America staff member], who was telling me the story of how the entire Los Angeles production crew was laid off yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. As they were wrapping up their final shoot of the day, all of the employees who were at the studio—roughly 15 of them—were asked to sit down for a conference. Out of nowhere, Laura D. (executive producer) and Michelle (head of HR) appeared and informed everyone that they were going to be laid off. They were offered two options: two weeks severance pay in addition to the two weeks of vacation pay they were about to get paid—apparently the production crew were all about to go on a two-week paid hiatus, OR, two weeks paid vacation after which they would return to assist in the tear-down of the studio, which would probably take two weeks, and two weeks severance pay. Basically, four weeks of pay or six weeks of pay. It sounds like everyone was stunned and a lot of tears were shed, including many from Laura D.
Also from the phone conversation I learned that NA is sitting on about three weeks worth of unedited footage that will hold them afloat for roughly a few more months, but there isn't any word what the company is going to do after that. I would imagine that those employees working in NA's San Diego office who haven't yet been laid off are wondering what kind of job security they have at this point. I've heard of at least three layoffs from within the San Diego office over the past two months. The economy is truly affecting us all.
If this is true, we're both shocked and saddened—Naughty America has long been a Fleshbot fave, and to see them taken down by economic woes would be truly tragic. We hope this email isn't a sign of things to come across the entire industry—it's so much better when people are getting laid, rather than laid off.

I don't know the backstage saga, but I thought NA was one of the new-media success stories of porn. These were the guys who are supposed to be killing off the studios who were based in DVD sales, and were catching up to the web-based revenue streams. Is Brazzer's next?

From what I have read elsewhere, they are keeping the Arizona and Vegas studios up and running.
Its just the LA office. Which is bad enough.

So I hear it's not about money but about outsourcing the shoots so they won't get hassled by Cal-OSHA. It's a trend.

Brazzers just introduced a new ring of websites called MoFos that will be in addition to the existing Brazzers ring. Since the Brazzers website won't be decreasing it's output, it seems to me that Brazzers is still expanding.
From what I've heard (I'm not a member), NA closed its Naughty Country Club member forum within the last few weeks.
I had to fix a quote. Yes, I have to fix a post from a mod.

so they are basically going to become the walmart of porn, out sourcing so they wont have to pay their employees full time wages or benefits.
the truly saddest part is NA employed tommy pistol who just had a baby with gia paloma this summer.... what a terrible situation this must put them in. :(

Perhaps there are too many porn companies. And some of them need to merge in order to cut their costs and increase efficiency of production.
And they certainly need to get away from any jurisdiction where the government is interfering and hassling them.

I agree. Someone should call Lou Dobbs.
Here are a couple of articles I found which offer a glimmer of hope. First, there is a Financial Times article that reports that Toshiba saw an increase in HD DVD sales by slashing prices. Then, there is another report from the UK that indicates that Internet retailers saw sales increase by 2.9% in November.

It really sucks about Tommy Pistol being laid off with a new baby. Gia is such a sweetheart. Hopefully, someone can find him a new gig.

There's only two words that can save porn from any economy woes: SALE. BLOWOUT. Make it cheaper and watch it fly off the shelves.

its a porn name, and a lot of them are retarded, so get over yourself.
it doesnt change the fact that he is out of work with a wife and new child.
he left new york and a union job as a porter to work for NA because they offered him a contract which included all the same benefits and supposed job security.
he is an awesome person, very creative and talented and super funny.
i just hope anyone who is reading this may be in the position to try him out as a director.

^What Dana said.
There is a Canadian documentary series called "Webdreams" which shows the day-to-day lives of industry people. Tommy and Gia are in the current season. I just saw an episode where Tommy was very sick, and Gia was helping him in and out of bed, and into the bathtub to cool down his fever. That was a tender, nurturing side to Gia I never saw at her Kink.com shoots.
Tommy seems like a swell guy. I also hope he lands another gig soon.

I wasn't aware Lou had a drinking problem.
Alas, he is an equal opportunity straight shooter. He talks a lot about China these days because it is outsourcing central. But, if they still keep transcripts of his show from a few years back at the CNN website, you will see that he had also called Mexico, Canada, Central America, Colombia and the EU on their crap.
But, from what I heard, he also supports gay marriage, so he can't be as bad as his detractors say that he is.

Actually, Lou doesn't have a problem with Mexicans either. His current wife is Mexican, and so are the two Border Patrol Agents he is defending, Ramos and Compean.
It is illegal aliens, drug cartels and their willing lackeys in the Department of Homeland Security and the Administration that Lou has a problem with.

In today's economy he left a union job from NYC to go work a porn job? I seriously doubt that the porn company offered all the same benefits as numerous union negotiations. What was he, nuts?

I don't know for sure. But, I have a feeling that passion, creativity and something he loved dearly factored into his decision. If I remember Maslow correctly, he said that human beings need more than just the "defficiency needs" of getting by. That is what makes us different from animals.
Also, I might be wrong, but I think Tommy left his union job to direct for NA before the collapse of Lehman Brothers and AIG.

Actually he doesn't have a problem with illegal aliens or blame illegal aliens for this mess. He has said many times illegal aliens are the only ones that ARE NOT TO BLAME.
He blames the Mexican government for not addressing the poverty that causes the problem and allowing drug cartels to run their country.
He blames the US government for allowing US companies to exploit illegal aliens, not securing the US border , and not pressuring Mexico to end this poverty.

You don't hear him slurring his words? It's actually not evidence that he is drunk on set. But people who drink heavily for many years get that kind of permanent slur that never goes away even when they're as sober as they get.
I don't actually know for a fact that Lou drinks. I just think the evidence I'm aware of strongly suggests it. I don't think a person who drinks is incapable of doing anything valuable. I was just making a joke at Lou's expense. I actually like Lou Dobbs. I just think he gets stuck on pet issues when there's a whole world of issues for him to harp on. But CNN would never let him on the air if he was indiscriminate.

He went from a janitor, to a short term porm performer to now perhaps a "director"?
I guess anybody can "direct" porn. Which shows why the big names ( Jordan, Darkko, Stagliano, et al) prosper in this down market.
Now where's my chair?

The guys you mention, Jules and Stag, specifically, are businessmen who OWN, and pornographers who each came into the market and eventually became game-changers. Darkko was a professional photographer already. These guys have a lot more time invested in the biz, and are not primarily performers. Probably not a fair comparison. But I wouldn't diss Tommy because he's working class New York. Those kind of people built the greatest city in the world. What have you done?
To your other point, though ... yes, anyone can be a porn director. Esp. with the zero budgets these days.

Aside from the fact you know nothing about me ( oh, did I mention the two rental properties I own in NYC ( B'klyn ) earned by WORKING my ass off, what in the world does your statement mean? Some producer should front some "experiment" to some 'nice' guy. Its a business, Einstein
Oh, did I mention I shot over 50 swinger vidoes that rival some of the crap that is sold as 'professional' porn. And with a Sony 8MM no less. I'd be happy to send you a few flicks if you make nice to me...

Back on topic...
I wonder how much of it is just the thinning of the herd--there's so much crap out there that disintegrates when times are tough and people get choosy. I know a number of people, and I've read a lot of complaints here, who are turned off by the prevailing tastes of X-treme videos that not only are NOT erotic, they're repulsive. Obviously there's a market for the extreme, but I tend to think a lot of that is also what's pirated, and the more mainstream ends up being served by the hard-R stuff that runs on Skinemax late at night--where you get beautiful women getting laid, but you don't get spitting, gapes, massive insertions, bukkake, and so on.
It's the same with other industries. I know a lot of companies that treated their customers as granted, where "the least effort required to sell" was good enough; and then suddenly when faced with competition or a choosier customer base, their customers vaporized and they cried the blues. They blamed everyone but themselves and their own cheap-ship products or shoddy customer service.
I'm not saying that this explains it all, but I think it's a significant factor.

More than a few DVD porn studios as well as internet porn companies have gone out of business the last couple of years or severely cut back on their production schedule. And as a result there are a lot of directors who can't get jobs or gigs. There are a lot of reasons for this, including piracy like illegal tube sites and file sharing services especially online where people can watch so much porn for free, and increased competition online and in the DVD market, plus loss of brick and mortar stores, as well as people's reluctance to use their credits cards to purchase porn, not to mention the poor economy. 2009 will certainly see an acceleration of this trend.
Luckily for me, besides the girl-girl movies I film for my own DVDs and sites I also shoot movies for a wide range of other companies for DVD and for web sites of every type imaginable, so I keep busy even if he fans don't' see my director's credit on the videos. All the mediocre companies and vanilla porn stuff is very hard to sell nowadays. A net savvy fan who does not care about owning the physical DVD will essentially never have to pay for porn again in their lifetime, and there is a whole generation of young people now who would laugh in your face if you even suggested that they should pay for porn. As a result you are going to see companies specializing in fetishes and odd niches that one cannot easily find for free. This week between Christmas and New Years I personally will be filming foot fetish porn for a guy in Israel, small penis humiliation for some guy in the UK, some schoolgirl creampie scenes and baby-faced teen girl scenes for a company in Canada and some kissing videos for my own company, all with very exacting and high production values. If you are a director filming or a company releasing vanilla porn with two people fucking on a couch in this environment, you are out of business in 2009...

I don't think a thread about people getting laid off is a place to make jokes, but that's just me.
Back to the topic of anybody being able to direct porn, Eli Cross has long said that the only thing you need to be a successful porn director is a camcorder and an opposable thumb.
That being said, there is a difference between being just a successful porn director and a Great porn director. Eli Cross is a great porn director. Tommy Pistol is also a great porn director.
The sad thing is that the pentultimate poster before me said rings true. In this industry, just like in the car industry (if the fucking government would just get the fuck out of the way and let Darwin's Law of Natural Selection solve the problem), sales are down and a thining of the herd looks like it is in the air. The audience for porn is contiguous with the audience for reality TV. Give them lots of empty glam and meaningless bling, and they will be satiated just like the rest of Pavlov's dogs. They have no appetite for greatness because it is something which does not even occur to them to aspire to, even vicariously. The true artistes, pioneers and daredevils risk penury because the fad these days is mediocrity.

As a consumer of porn... I just want to get off on porn. That's what encourages me to buy.
I'm not into art or class or whatever.
Then again, what gets me off may differ from what gets you off.
I haven't lost my job, but the threat is there. My company laid off some people this December. It's because the end of December marks the end of a fiscal quarter and the fiscal year that lay offs occur before the holidays. It's not because bosses are trying to play Scrooge. I've known bosses who say that it's the most awful part of the job.
Recessions are normal parts of the economic cycle. Just like snow falls. Although, this recession has the potential to turn into a blizzard!
I've decided to save my money and not subscribe to very many porn sites. I'll just watch what I already own on my hard drive.
If a porn star contacted me and asked, "Consumer, what do you want?" I'd tell her what I'd like to see and hear and I'd be willing to pay for it.
But I won't pay for mediocre porn. In this economic climate, I'm even more finicky.
When you're unemployed and looking for work and frustrated that no one is hiring, well then you have more free time on your hands. Use your time to learn and develop new skills to make yourself more valuable. If you have no money to take classes, surf the web. Google knowledge is free. Hell... loiter in bookstores and read for free. I haven't been busted yet. ;)
My hours were cut in 2007. I lost a lot of money. In 2008, I played "catch up". Now 2009 may be hard, and I'm thinking, "Oh no, not again!" :P
Maybe now is the time to think and re-invent porn.
Hang in there, people. Hang in there.

Fair enough.
For the purposes of clarification, let me state that, as far as I am concerned,
Good porn=Kink.com
Great Porn= Corruption and Upload
Mediocre porn=...well, this is a nice friendly board, and I don't want to hurt the feelings of anyone who makes what is mediocre porn to me. Suffice it to say that mediocre porn, as far as I am concerned, is that genre of porn that has the same name as one of the characters from The Muppets.
I mean, once you have seen Hillary Scott getting fucked by a gun, what else is there after that, really?

As I read it, you were slamming Tommy's efforts at making his way up the ladder from performer to director because his previous profession was as a janitor. If you haven't seen Tommy's flicks, why are you slighting the guy? Because he's not a Ph.D?
So you work hard and own property. Good for you. Given that, I'm surprised you have so little empathy for your fellow hard-working New Yorkers.
I have no interest in watching swinger videos. But I'm sure they are first-rate.

Skronker has got it right anyone making jokes about Tommy situataion are way off base. just like the people who went crazy about Brian Surewood when got arrested. some people on these forums have never met any of these people we talk about. but they sure can judge them or attack them from behind there computers. me i have met both Tommy and Gia they are both nice people outside of the porn world. no one deserves to be disrespected when they are down after something like this. i went from making 35k a year to making 17k this year. 2009 i might make no idea might lose my part time job. never know in this economy and being 40 soon i could be up a creek without a paddle fuck might not even have a boat i will still swim. i don't even have it as hard as some people i know a friend who's husband just got told a week before thanksgiving he was losing his job of 22 years just like that hes in his 40's and now has to worry about his family something you should not have to worry about. those who want to throw rocks in glass houses hope you feel secure in your job if not please come back when you lose it so we can make jokes about you then ok not even a laughing matter at all. back to the topic Skronker i am truly sorry to hear this news i am sorry to say i feel it's just the beginning for many things like this.

Yes, that is unfortunate. I remember Tommy Pistol from Facial Abuse. He always seemed to have a sort of charisma. Looking at his directorial endeavours, he seems to have the right creativity to stay in the job.
P.S. Dana, Loved you in EA #6. My favourite scene of 2008! Would love to see you do a scene for Facial Abuse.

Fair enough. I suppose that, with all the college broads basically giving it away for free, it is difficult for me to get hard over conventional porn.
Now, a girl taking a cattle prod to her tits and snatch, or a girl taking fists, a baseball bat or a gun to the snatch...now THAT is something I can take my hat off too!

^I'm confused. Your first post (the one quoted by HeyNow) makes it sound like you don't like gonzo. This new post makes it sound like you do like gonzo.
Is one of the two posts a joke, or do you have a misunderstanding of the term "gonzo"?

Killbill, my apologies. Looking back at the posts, they are indeed confusing.
What I mean to say in all of this is that I do not find gonzo all that entertaining. I find it, no offense intended, bland and mundane...unlike WiredPussy.com or Eli Cross' films.
If it works for others, great! But it does not work for me.
I hope this clarifies things, and I apologize for any and all inconveniences I have caused.

^I see...the definition of gonzo is more amorphous than I thought it was. I thought it meant something along the lines of gonzo "journalism" a la Hunter Thompson and Anderson Cooper (the Caroline Kennedy of the media) wherein the "journalist"--or in this case, the camera operator--does not merely report what is going on, but inserts him/herself into the story and makes him/herself part of the story.
Long story short, I thought gonzo was something in the sense of "stale, routine fucking" or, as Melissa Lauren said in a French-language interview, "Maman et Papa" (Mom and Pop fucking.)
My point in all of this, as obscure as it was up to this point even to me, is that I find simple b/g banal, while WiredPussy and Eli Cross' productions excite me.
