OMG, guys my brain hurts. I have just been audibly assaulted for the last 30min by a group of women claiming porn leads to serial killing, because supposedly lots of serial killers have watched porn. These women are full on believers, and claim there sociology teacher told them so.
OMFG, is there really upstanding research on this? I looked all over and could not find one usable statistic on the matter. Every site I found only stated a bunch of notorious serial killers who watched porn, and of course Ted Bundy who claimed porn was what caused him to go off the deep end. But real statistics, that would mean even if 0.1% who watched porn became serial killers, then the world would have at minimum 60,000 serial killers and that's only the part of the world with 24/7 access to internet, not including the serial killers in 3rd world parts of the world.
My brain needs a rest.

Since (depending which stats you believe) between 60 and 90% of all men watch porn, you can expect that 60 to 90% of male serial killers watch porn too!
But you know what all serial killers, 100%, have in common? They breath air, so breathing leads to serial killing!!!!

Makes a change from heavy metal fans getting the blame for being serial killers.

This is most certainly not true. If anything, there was more "violent pornography" (porn that showed violent rape, murder, etc) in the 1970s.
But yeah, what Jacco said. If you go into research thinking there is an existing connection, then you will find it.

Not sure what you mean by "explicit." The films I am referring to show close up vaginal, anal, and oral penetration, ejaculation, (fake) blood, etc. Look up "roughies."
Explicit porn (by which I am guessing you mean hardcore? as in, unsimulated?) in the 1970s was certainly not the corporate industry it is now, but it did still constitute an "industry" on a small scale by the mid-1970s. Perhaps not "mass production" as we know it today, but certainly churning out a lot of movies.
Edited to add that in the 70s and early 80s it also was not uncommon to have a rape scene in an otherwise "regular" porn flick.

This is certainly true around here. At best, you'd have to go about 60 miles to see anything explicit, if not further (in excess of 200+ miles). And god only knows what the local civic groups and early feminists would've done (and I should know, being related to some) if they had tried to show it around here. I mean, we still have blue laws. But the internet has obviously changed things, and I guess before that it was video rentals (like you said, with VCRs), but most of that was before my time.
But I think there's more than a few differences to be noted between the sexploitation-type and "porno chic" themes from then and the stuff we see now (whether it's features, gonzo, or the countless branches of niche stuff out there). And no, I'm not saying one is better than the other since that can only be dictated by each person's particular taste. But on-topic... porn, videos games, heavy metal, take your pick; things like Ted Bundy are sadly going to happen whether these things exist or not.

I´ve seen flyers against porn where they actually quoted Ted Bundy.
I think that´s pretty funny.
Did he graduated in psychology?
Did he was mentally health?
Would you trust someone that tells he´s Napoleon? You wouldn´t, because you would know that he´s crazy.
So why would you believe Ted Bundy?

Saying porn leads to serial killing is really no different than blaming women for being raped because they wore short skirts. If the serial killer seeks out a trigger then whose fault is that?

Practically every dude watches porn. That argument is like saying breathing creates serial killers.
