A little history: In the late 90's I was mostly renting Private movies because of the great looking ladies and impressive production qualities. And then of course the North Pole series came about which offered up some great scenes and then by 2000ish the Barely Legal series was a must. Before these, honestly, I rented a lot of Vivid comps. You know those 4 hour bad boys. Way too many of those. And then the Wicked and Vivid movies plus Dane Productions had a couple of pretty good lines. I may have skipped some history, but that is probably 80% of my rentals from that time period. I don't think I saw much from Anabolic.
So, what did I miss out on?
Now, by 2002 I had discovered the great ADT and that really helped bunches and by 2003 I was an exclusive online DVD renter and not limited what the old video shop may or may not have carried. But then I was mostly seeing current releases with a few older ones mixed in.

Ditto BigBobxxx and I have been watching porn from this era lately for two reasons. 1)I still find several porn actors from this period compelling and 2) 'Pleasure Productions,' features are in the $5.00 discount bin at my local shop. We're talking top notch productions from the period with elite casts made by celebrated directors. Here are some of my recent purchases: Eros Instinct--great ggb with Shana McCullogh and Lex Steele + great scenes with Tina Tyler, Angelica Sin and Asia Carrera. Phoenix Rising--Gwen Summers vehicle also staring Sydnee Steele and some stars of lesser note who turn in good scenes nonetheless. Good production values and story line in this one as well. Shattered Vows--great opening scene with Sydnee Steele, a lez scene with Keri Windsor/Lauren Montgomery plus Tina Tyler and Liza Harper scenes. Prey--Stephanie Swift fans will be disappointed but good scenes with Elana Evans, Heaven Leigh and the incomparable Sydnee Steele.
I also find Jim Holliday's over the top farces put out by VCA to be great fun: Perfect Smiles Paradise Hole The Sorority Sex Kittens Series -and he also collaborated on a couple of themed lines with Jill Kelly where they introduce the action and provide amusing asides and banter.
There's of course the much celebrate Jewel De'Nyle vehicle 'Dark Angels' from Digital Sin and the less well known but with more star powr [invalid URL removed]Whispers
And I could go on and on, I guess there's no need to rehash the classic Vivid/Wicked pics from this era.
I like the five scene (one lez, one group) formula that was standard in this era and the way these movies mimiced contemporary hollywood films. 2-3, 8-12 minute sex scenes can be more enjoyable then 1, 25 minute marathon.

What I disliked about that time was the undershot, where the cameraman zooms in on the penetration from below the girl. Back then they didn't try as hard to get shots from above because POV wasn't really popular yet. So instead of creating porn that you felt you were in, they attempted to show a lot more unrealistic angles. You get lots of 30 second penetration clips, where the camera will just sit there zoomed in on the penetration for a long time. They still do that today but not as much.
Also they tend to slip a lot of lesbian scenes in during that era which isn't my thing. I see that as a waste of two girls in a film and kind of misleading.
Outside of that, what I did like about that time was the creativity of vignettes or themed porno scenes. This incorporated more clothing, costumes and they also had better locations back then like on the beach.
I don't think I've ever seen a real gonzo seen shot on a beach with the water splashing against the girls ass. Now it's all on the couch or bed in gonzo which gets boring.

Also two of my favorite stars of that time are Cassidey and Cheyenne Silver. Devon was also ok, after awhile you really noticed the breast implants though..lots of rippled breast shots from that time..which is really grosse.
Remember that Cassidey scene where she is tied up in Christmas lights during the sex and the lights are on? That was pretty creative. I own a few of her compilations which are worth checking out for those who haven't seen much of her.

I think you missed out on Anabolic's golden age and would do well to catch up on the videos that had the best male talent taking on the hottest women in porn. They may be still doing well financially, but they're only a shadow of their former selves in the heat dept. Tom Byron's stuff from both Elegant Angel and Extreme is worth looking into. John Leslie's series for Evil Angel produced some stylish gems. I think it was a pretty good era for gonzo as it matured in presentation but hadn't totally resorted to questionable activities that may or may not be deemed sexual.
I'll have to look back at some of their stuff - I think I'll be disappointed in the overall look of the movies though. This is just based on stuff I've seen before. But maybe I haven't hit the 1998 and 1999 time frame yet.
And Dances, Cheyenne Silver was a bigtime favorite of mine, but I'll have to see this Cassidey chick.

The period you are talking about was when SilverStone was at it's best. They shot so many huge names. Think Tera Patrick, Silvia Saint, Jewel Denyle, Jill Kelly ... A lot of the films were kinda artsy but there are tons of gems.
The early numbers in the Anabolic World Sex Tour series were quite good. Somehow the Euro girls seemed less jaded then, a little more amateur... The UK volume features an early Sabrina Johnson scene, perhaps even her first, that is classic. She still had some meat on her bones, and when they dp her she smiles like a flower girl at a wedding.
There are some good Ben Dover movies from that period, too. His main stud, Pascal, had a way with the ladies -they seemed really to want to fuck him.
I'll bump this up one last time...I've seen some that were suggested here but I still wonder what else might be out there for me. As some point of reference, for recent releases over the past year or so I thought these were the best: Ass 2 Mouth 4, Tear Me a New One 3, Grand Theft Anal 9 and Gaped Crusaders...etc. I'm a disgusting pervert.

The Antonio Passileni(sp?) films for VCA were good during that time period also(New Wave Hookers 5, Devil in Ms Jones 6, Sexworld 2002, Capt. Mongo's Porno Playhouse, etc.)
I liked a lot of what rosebod was putting out-they had good angle coverage of the anal shots, i though. nicole lace was in a lot of these; pj sparxxx did an anal w/tom byron; and private was killer during this time, before the editors got carried away with the quick cuts. i liked a lot of what vca was putting out-golddiggers comes to mind, w/jill kelly, sofia ferrari, etc. and yeah jim holliday's flicks were an automatic rental. jasmin st. clair was huge during this time.
Don't know how I missed this thread back when. I consider 1997 to 2003 to be the last truly good period of porn. I've seen tons of films from that time period, and still buy or rent about 50% of my DVD's from that period. Just seemed to be hundreds of women in that time who really liked to fuck or at least put on a damn good show. Not that there aren't a lot of hot women now, but the women during those periods were especially hot to me. I also believe that most of the directors were hitting their stride back then. I mean you had Jules Jordan directing Lex Steele, the late Jon Dough & Eric Everhard, Mike John, Justin Slayer, Tom Byron, the whole Evil Empire, Red Light District, Anabolic/Diabolic, Stoney Curtis, West Coast Productions, and Shane's World. I personally believe that feature films were especially good during that period, not all of them obviously, but a high percentage I thought. Seemed to be a lot of women who could really carry a film during that period. Jewel De'Nyle, Devon, Julie Meadows, Asia Carrera, Chloe Nichole, Sunset Thomas, Devinn Lane, Alexa Rae, Flower Tucci, Carmen Luvana, Dana Vespoli, Calli Cox, Julia Ann, Jill Kelly, Taylor St. Claire, Savanna Samson, Nikita Denise, Sunrise Adams, Janine's return, and Jenna "freaking" Haze. Might just be my perspective and personal tastes, but there just didn't seem to be many bad performers then. Sex-wise and directing-wise, I think it was a great period. 1997 to 2002 was a very good period in adult movies. Some hot porn stars and excellent, well filmed movies. I couldn't list them all but there are miles and miles of them.

That period brought in my opinion, the best porn ever. Anabolic/Diabolic had the best stuff shot by the best directors. Namely Mike John, Jon Dough, and to a lesser extent, Vince Vouyer shot extremely hot porn with great female talent. The sex was more raw and nasty feeling than anything you see now. The girls didn't seem as sterile and it was shot perfectly. It was also a time before all the choking, slapping, and spitting became so popular. This was just nasty raw sex. Un-Natural Sex, Pervted POV, Down the Hatch, Up your Ass, and some of the initiations, Bring'em Young, and others were awesome. Also, the period when Seymore Butts had Alisha Klass as his Tushy Girl was great as well.
Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but the Anabolic titles were also my faves from this period. I liked Vince's Initiations series on top of all the great Mike John stuff. Somebody mentioned Rosebud. Great wall to wall titles directed by the greatest sex shooter in the history of porn, Alex DeRenzy(Rex Borsky). Should mention that almost all of the best stuff predated the 1997-2002 period you seek. This includes the incredible Nicole Lace who's best work was in 1994-95. Grateful that she's remembered. Patrick Collins loved her so much, he got her to quit porn and married her. The first Ten volumes of the Cumback Pussy series with Tom Byron at the helm were great works of gonzo porn art. After Byron split to Extreme and the series was helmed by guys like Dale Jordan, it lost steam. Many dismiss the series because they saw only later volumes witout realizing the brilliance of the early ones. Check out #6, the hall of fame edition with Asia Carrera and Tiffany Mynx among others.
