Yep, you read right.

There are two pictures I can think of which leave no doubt that porn got there first.

Bram Stoker's Dracula, contrary to the title, is not a literal rendering of the Victorian novel. The major plot of Dracula searching for his long lost love and finding her reincarnated in contemporary London is nowhere to be found in the book. It is however to be found in the 1979 porn classic Dracula Exotica, with Samantha Fox and Jamie Gillis. It is precisely this longing which brings the Count out of hiding to . . . contemporary New York. It's a great porno film, and if this wasn't evidence enough, Jamie has told me that Coppola used to attend the XRCO Awards dinners!

The second instance is a Nicholas Roeg art film from 1980, called Bad Timing: A Sensual Obsession, starring Theresa Russell and Art Garfunkel. In this picture, Theresa had the sex drive of Mrs. Robinson at 23. Promiscuous and strung out, her demise is told in flashback, with her lying and dying, pallid on an operating table under cutting flourescent light.

A year earlier, the moody porn film "Her Name Was Lisa" (also starring Samantha) explored this territory in very similar fashion. This time, the heroine -- a hooker and a junkie -- lies funearally dead. With each visitor to her coffin, an episode of her sordid life is told. We watch her unravel. We also watch some incredibly hot sex along the way, including Samantha fucking her sponsor up the ass with a dildo before descending into a heroine-induced stupor.

These two films bear an uncanny resemblance in theme, non-linear presentation and harsh, cold cinematography.

Has anyone else seen either pairs of pictures?

Funny you should mention this... My wife and I tried to watch Bram Stoker's Dracula again this weekend and we have still never make it all the way through. It gets my wife hotter than any other movie ever.

We were talking just yesterday about how the movie somehow feels more like an artistic porn than an actual Hollywood film.
