Porn sales like many other things are supposedly down because of the economy. But even before the recent economy slump I kept hearing DVD sales were down. Considering, the length of time all this has been going on I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen much change in the porn biz to try and combat falling sales. But perhaps I'm missing something and changes have been made and I'm not aware of them. On the retail store level I haven't seen much change at all. There are stores who still charge $59.99 for a movie that's over 3 years old and has been sitting in that store the entire 3 years. I'm not seeing much in the way of new sales or deals just the same old deals on old compilations and low quality stuff people tend not to buy. Are the top companies doing anything differently? Are they dropping prices on their products? Is their output the same as it's always been?

People still by from retail stores? Where? Most retail stores in Phil/NYC/Balt have closed down.

I am not surprised. DVD sales of Hollywood movies are down 30%, and there is talk that there will be fewer movies with lower budgets. Even actors are going to feel the pinch. Yesterday's Financial Times had a story on it. Also, here is a thread on Porn Layoffs. They said that Naughty America let a lot of people go. Another thing worth mentioning is that Kylie Ireland is selling Corruption and [ invalid url ] on her website for a fraction of the price I paid for them at a retailer. Not to mention that she autographs her work, which only doubles the value of the DVDs, so you are getting an excellent deal if you buy it through her site. Edited by - Ibrox on 1/17/2009 10:51:38 PM
Porn sales are down across the board for several reasons. Here are just a few: 1) Pirated movies readily available on torrents for free 2) Pirated movies readily available on adult tube sites for free 3) Poor economy. First thing to go is non-essentials, especially when it's so readily available for free. 4) Shady business practices from adult sites like hidden cross sales, double charges and other things to make a consumer less likely to trust their credit card info online. On one hand, I'm bummed because the industry I've lived off for over 10 years destroyed itself. Over the course of the past decade, it went from releasing lower quantity but quality products to just putting out more than the next guy... kinda like throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. - PornAddict

Porn is getting battered from multiple sides. First, porn has passed a point of saturation. The sheer volume of porn available on the internet and through brick and mortar stores is staggering. With so much product, everyone is eating into each other's sales. Secondly, porn is luxury not a necessity so with the economy in the shitter not as many people can afford to spend money on goods like porn. Finally, piracy from torrent and other free websites further erodes profits because quite a few people don't care about the superior picture and sound quality of DVDs and Blu-Rays. They can get off just fine to free sites that tend to have massive collections of material.
One thing people forget to mention here is BAD QUALITY PORN AT OUTRAGEOUSLY HIGH PRICES How many times I have rented out a movie (where the DVD said $59 as price) only to find out that I fast-forwarded the entire movie without watching anything of interest.

true about the price. I will never pay $40 for a single dvd. A double disc sure, but not one disc. And the online retailer I deal with out of Montreal will give you free shipping if your order is over $100. I search out sites for prices on certain titles. There are some I would love to get but I am not about to fork out $30 US and another $7 for shipping. Add 20%-25% to that for the exchange rate and I can buy 5 regular movies for that price at HMV. I am surprised that the video stores are still in business. They charge way too much. All the Vivid, DP, Wicked, Adam & Eve, Evil Angel, Jules Jordan releases all run $39.99 and up here in Toronto at the bigger Adult Video stores that have a better selection. I went to some smaller ones and the selection is garbage and they don't have hardly any from those studios I mentioned. I order from USA retailers from time to time. Movie By Mail, Action DVD are good for thier prices and shipping usually. And they won't send the jewel cases international. they will send the artwork only. That is great so that Canada Customs doesn't open the package for inspection. They don't confiscate it, they just view the movies, make copies for themselves, then charge me the 12% tax on the converted to Canadian amount, plus a $5 handling fee.
There's also a $250 fee for every title to be reviewed for objectionable content by the OFRB. That, plus the higer taxes contributes to higher prices at retail stores.
I live in Las Vegas. There are still quite a few here. Most of them have booths and I'm guessing they make their money there. I've never understood why anyone would go to a booth to watch movies but I suppose for whatever reason they can watch porn at home.
I understand why sales are down. The question I was looking for an answer for is "What are companies and retailers doing to improve or help sales?". It seems that no one is really doing anything any different than when sales were strong. Have the companies lowered their price points? Have they cut back releases? Are they trying to give more bang for your buck? It seems like the companies or the retailers are responding to what's happening.
^^There is no plan--other than to let the small companies go out of business. The big companies like Vivid, Wicked, Digital Playground will survive, and re-boot after customers begin buying product in greater numbers. IMO the product that will sell in quantities enough to increase sales again will be less extreme, more couples oriented. That's how you get NEW customers to buy product.
It seems like more DVDs are coming out than ever! I'd love it if the internet dudes work a distribution deal with a big dog and got their stuff out on DVD too. After a wait to let the scenes soak in on their site. (Of course, some are already on some level, like Brazzers, Reality Kings, Bang Bros. I think.) I know the death of DVD (and Blu-ray) has been called for many times in favor of the iTunes model or all out streaming. That wasn't your question. Let's see. It seems like Elegant Angel for example, generates a little extra excitement around their movies - big releases with the biggest stars of the year (Performers of the Year), movies with big shakin' asses (which fans love) and every couple of months (it seems in 2008, probably earlier too) they put out a movie with the first anal scene of some star (Buttwoman with Alexis Texas, Dirty Girl with Kristina Rose, someone else in the Big Wet Asses series) all to generate more sales. Companies like Zero Tolerance seem to have ramped up the amount of compilations they put out. Digital Sin / New Sensations has done this for as long as I can remember. I'd think that a high percentage of their scenes see new life on a compilation DVD - and they are good (the I Love *insert star name here* and various theme lines like Young Girls, Big Tits and Teenstravaganza.) And some studios and directors pile on the newest chicks possible, some pay up high rates of some superstar, most are just doing what they always do, toss out as much as possible and see what sticks. I have no real answer.

I live in Vegas too and I have to agree with you. The quality of most of the stores I've been in here make me wonder how they survive. I feel like I need to bathe after leaving.

You and me both. There are far too many titles on the market and too much to wade through if you're a new buyer (such as myself). I (reluctantly) dropped some money on "The Fashionistas" after hearing so much about it at the convention this year. Worth every penny and the wife enjoyed it too! Evil Angel has a new customer. As somebody else mentioned, smaller companies are going to fall by the wayside and the larger companies will stay at the top. At this point, there is too much content and too few buyers.

Seems to me the most common thing being done by porn companies is whinging about outside factors that they cannot change rather than addressing the internal factors they could... It's a great big open market now, and people are no longer forced to endure things the don't want, and are instead voting with their wallets for the things they do... If someone is into bi-sexual red-haired midget 3-ways, someone out there is producing it, so that's where he's spending his money now.

They need to embrace the female market or die. The Australians proved that sex positive porn sells. The big dogs need to band together and go after torrent sites aggressively. The bads need to learn to shoot rough sex beautifully. So much of porn is lazy. If you can't make sexy hardcore porn like Evil Angel, try a new angle. You ain't gotta lie to kick it.

That fee would seem prohibitive if you are only releasing a small amount of copies to be distributed to the various video stores/sex shops throughout the province, but it "buys" other things. For one, once screened and rated by the review board you get a certificate and you do not need to get worries about authorities subsequently charging the distributor for obscene content. That is a big plus. Then there is the fact that that certificate sticker on the video/DVD disc pretty much tells consumers that the product is authentic and not pirated, and which greatly reduces the possibility of pirating and all sorts of "shenanigans" on the part of the distributor you chose to deal with. This is the same with hc content as well as mainstream movies. The only negative factor on this distribution stream is that each province seems to have different review boards and distribution companies which greatly increases the "fee" depending how wide you wish to distribute the product.

I walk into the big Adult Video Store on Yonge Street and they have alot of dvd's but they have a huge sex toy section that takes up half the store. They seperate Vivid, Wicked, DP from the rest and those dvd's are marked way up. New realeses section is marked way up as well and it isn't like they have alot of copies of the dvd's. I love Jada Fire but I refuse to fork over $39.99 plus 12% tax for Squirtwoman that is one dvd. That is just insane. The deal they have is, buy 2 dvd's over $19.99 and get a 3rd one free, free one is lowest price out of the 3. Now me trying to find some good Black Girl/White Guy porn is hard as it is. Last time I was in there I found only 2 titles I wanted to buy. So I didn't bother. Another place nearby where I live had a buy 3 at $29.99 each get a 4th free. They have a small selection. I say prices need to come down.
^I've never understood the retail store mark up on this stuff. Online retailers usually sell any new movie for under 25 bucks so I don't understand why stores mark the same movies up to 60 bucks in some cases. Wouldn't it be better to sell more DVDs at a lower price than selling much fewer at the high mark up? Why don't they mark down movies that they've been sitting on for years? I guess the thinking is that casual customers don't know or care that it's a few years old if they're interested in it but...wouldn't it seem that after awhile of having a movie in the inventory that hasn't moved you'd do something to get some of your money out of it?
I would guess that more often than not guys go to a booth to get their dick sucked rather than watch a movie. This is what I hate about retail stores, there is one down the road from me, pretty nice place and I go there to buy toys, lube, maybe rent a movie. But I hate spending any amount of time in there because the store is loaded with "creepy looking" guys and they are always eyeballin me.
Maybe, maybe not. I figure a smaller company has smaller overhead and doesn't have to sell as many copies to be profitable. For many fans the most important element in the movies are the girls. If the company can get the right girls to be in their movies and offer them at a lower price that can be appealing to a customer. For example, I like seeing certain girls when they appear in a high end movie like the stuff from JULES JORDAN or EVIL ANGEL but if they're in a BLACK MARKET movie for almost half the price I'm often just as happy and sometimes happier.
Wow! I'm so totally naive. I didn't think there was much of that type of thing happening. I rarely see any girls in those places so I just assumed there was no actual sex going on. I thought they were in there just choking the chicken because they couldn't do it at home for whatever reason. Now that I think about it, I sometimes hear the person at the counter telling the guys to stay in their own booths. I was so busy being creeped out by being in the store in the first place I never put two and two together.

I should've reworded my statement, I typed "smaller companies" but was thinking about companies (who are generally not mainstream) producing sub par content. The few movies I've seen from Black Market have looked really good. I just hate wading through all the garbage to find the gems.
Here's what's being done about it: Porn Marketing Guy 1: Jeezus Christ! Sales are down! What can we do about it? Porn Marketing Guy 2: We'll make more movies! Porn MArketing Guy 1: Excellent! You gonna finish that Budweiser?
Personally I think companies should drop their prices fast especially on their BR movies. Prices at $40 are insane.

Euro costs of DVD's are astronomically high, and although the marketplace is different we wonder why the situation is like that. For one thing most euro porn is plot driven, and what little there is of gonzo all-sex is mostly of the "amateur" kind. Just try to go on line to the various euro distributors and you invariably get a thumbnail video box cover, hardly any info, no year of release, incomplete cast list, hardly any screencaps or previews. And you are asked to shell out 35-40 euro for a title you know nothing about, and that they will tell you nothing about. In North America there is too much glut and no one company wants to scale down. Producers/distributors and store retailers don't seem to be speaking the same language at all. Blockbuster does not stock porn product and that's a big slice of the pie. There are very few mom and pop stores left and they know absolutely nothing about porn. The medium-large chain video stores are run by remote control by owners/administrators who hardly ever step in the stores and are clueless as to what people like or want to see. Sales and counter epople are young part-time students who know nothing about Bergman, Fellini, Mario Bava, Kurosawa and even less what an Ananbolic movie is. Everything seems to be ruled by what the product costs and not how many AVN awards the movie has received. So if high-scale distributors like Evil Angel, Private, Vivid, Penthouse charge the local distributor-video retail store a high price for their product the video store owner/administrator passes on it, even though he may be aware the product is of high quality and will have a longer shelf life and will attract a certain type of knowledgeable cliente (which is usually of the minority). The video store owner will buy a 2-3 year old title of mid quality from a smaller outfit if he thinks he can buy it for $12. Even if he rents it 4-5 times he has made his own money back, then he will place it in the "sale" bin for $9.99 or 2 for $15. I can't ever recall a video store outlet that stocked more than one DVD of a hc title. But you will find 20-60 copies of the latest Batman movie in most video stores of small-medium size. Then there is the rental factor. While new releases of mainstream movie is set on a 24-hour return policy, porn movies are usually rented over a period of days (I have seen 3 and even 7 days as of late). So if a renter has taken home the hc movie for the full 7 days, when I am going to ever see it and how many times am I going to visit the store to determine if it's there or not? Since they usyally combine 2-3 titles for a special price, a renter has taken home some 3-4 titles for a period of aweek. What kind of money does the video store owner make on that transaction. Very little, and which pushes him to keep buying lower end product, since he will make even less money if he buys a high end title from major producrs for over $30. Then there is the question of illegal internet download of hc movies which are close to DVD quality, and small time operators who sell you bootleg copies of movies for a measly sum. Porn movies in one form or another have been around for about 4 decades now. The novely is gone, and there is way way too much product available. And everything looks the same. One person does MILF movies, and the following month everyone is churning them out....Everything has been done at one time or another, so the high retail cost of the product just does not justify it buying it any longer, unless it is considered a "keeper" and those are rare.

I can remember buying very bad porn 30 years ago for $30, no sound, and thought it was a bargain. That's at least $100 in today's money. And the whiners think it should be $15? Amazing. Maybe the girls will take their head-stomps for free. LOL!
not just porn. the overall entertainment industry does this same thing...stealing, ill. dl'ing are wrong, but they aren't the SOLE reason for this. Also, I wonder how much used dvd sales cut into this...i mean, i usually have one online membership or another, and those always give you a good way to follow specific people. some of my faves are from getting to download a scene by the girl...as someone before mentioned, shady stuff on box covers, the cover girl not being in it, it being a crapshoot on quality of video, them not explaining some scenes are from other discs which you might already own, sometimes not even saying during the movie or credits which girl is which, (if i read a review here that says that, i won't buy it, cause a lot of porn watching for me is also research for my next dvd), but also, i don't know any of the girls from the box covers, cause i don't always follow the names. so when i go get it, i can't always tell 25 EXTRA dollars worth of value over the one that's used for 14.99...and porn from 2007 is just as good to me as that new vid from 12/09 if i've never seen either one... Maybe they will do something with the online ones to make it a bigger deal when they update. I had a deluxepass membership once, and with a decent hard drive, or some blank dvds, you can load up enough for a lifetime...so it's not worth the continued money month after month. whereas, as much as the greedy porn hoarder inside me hates to admit it, vivid's site that, last time i had a membership was streaming only, would keep me as a member, because i have a lot of stuff on there i've never seen... Or maybe something for the online people that's a contract thing completely separate from the studios who count mostly dvd sales? like the way for video games a few years ago, the consoles didn't compete against the pc based games...you might have a sony ps2 game that wouldn't show on the gamecube or xbox, but it could still show up on a pc, and sometimes have some sort of subsription online play.

I've always thought that the reason why retailers have such high mark up is that they don't want the DVDs sold to begin with. They want them rented instead. You have a DVD that cost you $20 to buy from wholesale. Would you rather one customer spend $25 to purchase that DVD or would you rather ten customers spend $5 each renting that DVD? They are figuring if they are going to sell that DVD it had better be for an obscene price to make up for all the revenue from rentals that you will not get from that DVD once you have sold it.

In the early days of video (early 1980's) hc movies were selling atround $80-$100, which was a princely sum in those days, but that was the only (legit) way to view/possess porn and enjoy it in your own livingroom. A hc movie shown in cinema theaters (some of the better ones) in the 1970 and early 1980's usually cost over $100,000 to make and it took months to edit it together and then only shown in a few large cities. Most shot-on-video movies now usually cost about a third of that amount.
I wrote a rather lengthy blog on this very point a few months back. Check it

I have done this or a variant thereof far too many times over the decades, so I understand when people are upset at having to pay for bad porn. That being said, I have never been disapointed with any film that has the names "Eli Cross" and/or "Kylie Ireland" anywhere in the credits (cast or crew.) I already own three such videos and I am going to add a fourth to my collection very shortly. I have also been extremely satisfied with the Belladonna films, as well as with any movie that has Melissa Lauren or Sandra Romain or Adrianna Nicole or Delilah Strong or Trina Michaels or Trinity Post or Aiden Starr or Julie Night in them. I would therefore say that, if you really want to get the best bang for your buck, do your homework on IAFD and print out a list of films with these performers/crew members in them. Then, armed with these lists, go to your retailer (web or snail), and ask for these videos. For those who have had problems ordering over the web, in my experience, if you go to a retailer and you very clearly know what you want (name of the video, company,producers/directors, date released, performers) and don't take no for an answer, they will order it for you. You might have to wait a couple of weeks--and, if you are ordering any of the films available at KylieIreland.com, you will also be paying lots more for them--, but, in the end it is worth it. Put it this way, you wouldn't walk into a car dealership without having done your homework, would you? IAFD is like the Carfax of the Adult Industry, (only probably more reliable since, unlike Carfax, they do not warn users to get a second opinion by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.) The trick to being a satisfied customer of the adult industry is being a smart customer of the adult industry. This means knowing what you want and what video to find it on.
Hi NateGlass I read your blog entry and you are not well informed (simply in my opinion), your best writing is in the last paragraph, I hope you don't mind that I quote it,
Now for all of you guys who do not visit brick and mortar stores, there is an endless supply of films to stock, so many in fact that brick and mortar stores simply lack the shelf space to stock them. Compilations and Catalog movies are SO profitable that the high price for new releases is simply a deterrent to purchase those films. If I were a retailer I would bet that I could buy comps and catalogs at such a low price I could easily make a 400% profit and still give the customer a good deal. The majority of current "gonzo" is nothing but new release comps. When I say this I mean it is a short scene with a particular theme, like say Anal. If you just want to watch girls get pounded in the ass as a consumer, you can save a great deal of money buying an anal themed compilation rather than the latest and greatest Ass Fucking Frenzy (not sure if that is a legitimate title or not, I hope it is not). The quality is similar. Who says porn sales are down? I know of one retail company where porn sales are UP and consistently go up year after year. Manufacturers might be down because they are competing with every swinging dick who has a video camera. So retail stores and internet consumers both have more product to choose from. Here is a good theoretical example, say there is a demand for movies with Midgets Getting Fucked While Wearing Fur Coats. Only one manufacturer makes these films and times are good, but other manufacturers see this and they start making lines with Midgets Getting Fucked While Wearing Fur Coats. The customer base does not expand. The customer choice does. So the original manufacturer starts to lose money on this highly profitable line due to competition. Porn sales are down for the manufacturer but not the retailer (internet or brick and mortar). Back to your blog about preview room pricing, Preview Rooms are NOT cheap to operate contrary to popular belief. Preview Rooms differ from Adult Arcades and Adult Theaters. Preview Rooms are usually larger and more comfortable than a whack booth or a theater seat. Preview Rooms are designed to allow a customer to view a movie that he probably cant watch at home. There is just something different about watching a movie on a Television in a comfortable environment than watching it on a computer screen. You mention in your blog about "small fees" for janitorial, the fee's are not small for the retail stores who take the lead and offer 24/7 janitorial services, heating, a/c on the square footage, not to mention the taxes. In "Brick and Mortar" any smart retailer calculates profits based on square footage. Preview Booths are usually at the very bottom of that calculation and the space could be used better financially speaking. Preview Rooms are nothing more than a service to the customer and hopefully the wanker will buy a bottle of lube or something else. When it comes to Arcades, some are profitable and some aren't. Some guys don't want to spend 10 dollars to watch a movie (a number I just pulled out of my ass and not a real number), they just want to see something for a few minutes and they get a variety of films to choose from. Magazine Sales still top the dollar per square foot volume sales, as a retailer you can display a large number of magazines in a small area. Lotions and Lubes are the next best profitable area for retailers, same concept. Small Display area, high volume and larger profit margins than magazines. Toys make up the 3rd place when it comes to profits for adult retailers, but again, that market has become over saturated. There are many of the same products from china in different packages. Rentals come fourth, when you can resell the same product it is damn near pure profit. But when you rent a comp or catalog video it IS pure profit. New Releases make up a large majority of rentals but a retailer has to rent so many of them out just to break even and then people don't return them, I would imagine that it is a big pain in the ass with new releases. There are only so many people in a demographic area who are interested in certain new releases. Movie Sales actually rank dead last in a retailers profitability per square foot margin. The people who actually want to own a movie for collectability are probably right here posting on ADT. MOST movie sales are made by customers who buy a porn once in a blue moon, or for bachelor parties. They don't want to blow the 50 bucks for a new release and split with a comp very happy to have saved the money. So who says Porn Sales are down? Nateglass, I really didn't want to bug your blog, it is good reading, I just wonder where you get your sources from? And the monopoly you speak of is not made up by Brick and Mortar stores or organized crime but by city zoning laws. Brick and Mortar stores have fought ferociously every day to keep their doors open and will continue to do so.

The answer is kind of easy. Make better product. If you make it, they will buy it. D'uh.
Could 3-D save porn ? I'm reading that 3-D TV technology (both with and without wearing the glasses) was the 'big' news at last week's Consumer Electronics Show.
I have worked in the adult industry for over 10 years, 9 of which were in Brick and Mortar retail. I think I'm pretty well informed. The last year of my career was spent on the studio-side, so I can bring the knowledge that I have gained there into the discussion. Though admittedly, I'm still new to the studio-side of the biz. You say that sales aren't down, but you cite one business as your basis for that. I've visited over 1000 adult video stores in the past year as part of my job, and the overwhelming majority are seeing declines. Even retailers like Dreamers in Texas (the best adult video chain in the country IMO) are seeing a decline (albeit smaller than most others).
Nate, it's all good, I really didn't mean to blast you personally and I apologize if I did. My numbers are solid and if you have as much experience as you say, you would more than likely agree with me on the breakdown. Every market is different in regions, even brick and mortar stores vary on their square footage breakdown which is why some are more successful than others. Some stores sell a lot of Lingerie while other simply don't. But just because one store sells a lot of Lingerie does't mean another store should stock the same amount and expect to make the same amount as the successful store. I was just referring to your Preview Room comments.
And you'd have no regular customers since regular customers won't come back for cheap comps. This statement alone shows how much you have to learn about adult retail.
This statement makes no sense at all. Gonzo is the acknowledgment of the camera. Comps are specific scenes that have been used in other releases, but "compiled" for another release ie. a "Best of Jenna Haze" movie, etc.
Again...this statement shows your inexperience. Might as well say...if you want to watch "superhero" movies, might as well save money and buy the original Superman and not go see Watchmen. Porn fans want to see NEW scenes. You are making the argument for "quantity over quality", and not everyone shares that preference.
One retail company does not an industry make. You must not have attended the recent AEE show or noticed the number of video stores (both Hollywood, Adult and combination) that are closing.
I worked in an adult retailer with preview rooms for almost 5 years. They in fact, ARE cheap to operate. They are a big room no doubt, but a couch and a TV is what you get. Maybe you've been into some preview rooms with an open bar, maid service, jacuzzi and masseuse....but 99% of viewing rooms are simple setups with pretty straightforward systems.
Did you write this post in the mid 90s? Adult magazine sales are nearly non-existent in every adult video store. That is why many magazine distributors have ceased operations and stores have scaled back square footage allocated to magazines
Kudos to you for mentioning the "Made in China" aspect of toys. However, that's where we cease to see eye to eye...toys are actually quite profitable as they are not affected by the internet problems the way DVDs are.
You make so many assumptions that you should just preface every sentence with "probably". Plenty of porn consumers will buy New Releases, provided they are shopping at a store with reasonably priced product. Do you have ANY experience in adult retail?
Isn't that the business model mainstream stores like BLOCKBUSTER used to work from? Hollywood has moved away from that mindset and perhaps the porn industry should also. Drop the prices and produce product with the intention of selling, you'll be able to buy at a cheaper price and thus able to buy more to sell. Rentals won't go away completely. After a certain amount of time passes and profit has been made from the rental, mark it down and sell it as "used". I think a porn store should have 3 levels of movies sales to work from. (1) New releases that are for sale and rental. (2) A bargain discount section of the really cheap compilation stuff and (3) A used/ex rental section of higher end movies that are a year or so old and isn't being rented much anymore. No movie should cost more than about $25 bucks unless it's a double disc. The inventory should always be moving. You shouldn't walk into a store and the inventory is the same as it was 6 months ago. The theory that stores keep the price high so they can rent that movie mulitple times may be true of some stores but most of the ones I see have the high mark up on movies they only have for sale. It's a crazy practice since so many people are aware they can get that stuff for half the price if they order online. I'd be more willing to pay a few bucks extra to buy it from a store than order it online but not if it costs almost twice as much to do so. I think porn biz could increase their numbers if they and the retailers abandon the old business model that's 30 years old.
Two things that I don't like about porn is the high prices and the damn spitting in porn. My last porn DVD I bought had male spitting in it that pissed me off so much it made want to never buy a porn DVD again.
Innovate! It is obvious that the old models of retail are in serious decline and a new business model is needed. Filesharing and downloading have been embraced by consumers but have been resisted by all content industries. (and that's not just because of the free content, it's a superior distribution platform) Just like the record industry the porn industry follows the same mold with bundled product and the only option for consumers was to buy an entire DVD even if there was only one song or one scene that the consumer found worthwhile. So starting with the buffet approach would be a big improvement. A better business model would allow consumers to dl all the content they want at a premiere price tier. Lower tiers with reduced limits for price conscious consumers. All of this on a platform which insured broad content in an organized catalog where consumers could easily find the content they most want. With a porn portal, like ADT, that studios feed content thru instead of a million different websites. Partnering with ISP's is another crucial component of the new model. ISP can be incented to provide the policing of content by limiting the transfer of files through license verified channels. So that's my 2 cents.

there seems to be just an oversaturation of porn. the bubble has pretty much burst or is close to it.

"Filesharing and downloading have been embraced by consumers but have been resisted by all content industries. (and that's not just because of the free content, it's a superior distribution platform)" Hear hear! Especially considering that no one has a hope in hell of stopping file-sharing ever... There will always be holes in so-called security that someone will prise open and fileshare through... better to find a way to exploit that, than try to cling to outmoded distribution methods.
