I've just been going through some of my old porn tapes from the 70s and 80s.
I must say, most of the sex scenes were terrible.
Some of them only had a quick blowjob, missionary position, then cumshot. All over in a few minutes. Man, no wonder I had to jerk off to the Sold Gold Dancers, I forgot just how bad those old sex scenes were. We must have been desperate for porn to tolerate that stuff.
In the 1970s and early 80s there were no video tape players, VHS didn't exist for the masses yet. The adult movies were not yet being made for viewing at home.
Once the mall cineplex was born, old-fashioned rundown movie theaters shut down for lack of business and were re-opened to show adult movies.
Those scenes were edited down to accomodate the audience in a theater, since there had to be the pretense of a storyline to go along with the sex.
(By the way, I recently found out why the audio being spoken never matched the mouth of the person supposedly speaking or moaning during sex - these movies were made in France and Germany, so they had to do a special over-dub audio track in English for American audiences.)
How well I remember several such places located in the Times Square area of Manhattan. I was a teenager growing up in small-town Connecticut. My friend and I would skip school and hop the train to NYC. We were 14 or 15 years old, yet for $10 they'd let us in without IDing us.
One such place was called the Roxy Theatre. Between movies, strippers would come out and do a strip tease. All the while, a colored lady would come up to each of the men in the audience and ask if they'd like a private show in the back.
In 1980, at one theatre, I saw actual live sex on stage between the movies. They'd carry a large mattress on stage, cover it with a fitted sheet, and get right down to business.

Noel founded the Caballero Control Company, and was the first to bring those European porn flicks to US audiences. In those days, the price of an 8mm reel from Caballero made for playing on your handy-dandy Super 8 home movie projector was priced at a paltry $89.95!!!
I hope Noel decides to commit all his memories and experiences into book form sometime soon. Not only was Noel the first to bring adult movies to VHS, he was the first to get public domain material (old movies and cartoons) on VHS and sell it real cheap in Woolworth and K-Mart, when home video players were in their infancy.
Well to me, porn then was more "Love Making" then hard "Pound Away Sex" like today. The mentallity was to take your girl to a flick and get her in the mood. In today's society we watch it and analyize it from beginning to end, and jerk off.
I kind of like the movies of the past b/c there is no Uncessary Screaming and yelling like "Wesley Pipes talking Shit" or "Janet Jacme's moaning".

I'm a fan of Kay Parker (love her look) and buy some of her compilation DVDs and it's sort of strange to see sex scenes so short. On top of being short half the scene didn't even show hardcore action. Some scenes look like half the sex is simulated. Must have been annoying to have to sit through so much story and when the sex finally happened it was over so quickly.

Meanwhile, I rented Sweet Little Sexpot (Loni Sanders -from Alpha Blue) and can strongly recommend it. For what its worth, at least some of the screen caps on the Kay Parker site Loni DVD show scenes that are on the AB disc.
I bought one on Adult DVD Marketplace called "Caballero Classics: Kay Parker" (it's 4 full length DVD movies in a set all starring Kay Parker). Quite a nice set. The movies I got in the set were: Nasty Nurses, Private Teacher, Sex Games, and The Young Like It Hot.
I have bought movies from Kayparker.net some of the quality is good some is not but I like them because a lot of the scenes are ones that I have not seen before. If you do order it takes a long time for them to arrive, at least two weeks. The thing about them is they have compilation of old school porn stars you can't find any where else. So they are ok not great but ok being that it is hard to find compilation of old porn stars they are the best I found.
I've never ordered anything from Kayparker.net. The comps I've bought are from 3 companies... ALPHA BLUE ARCHIVES has put out 3 volumes of Kay Parker compilations. All 3 are about 2 hours long. GENTS DVD who puts out THE GOLDEN AGE OF PORN series has 2 volumes of KP comps out. VCX has put out one called THE VERY BEST OF KAY PARKER. The quality from all 3 companies is great. I guess the ones I like the best are the ALPHA BLUE ACRCHIVES volumes. You can usually find them on various sites from about $10 to $15. I'd tell you which sites have best deals but I don't know if that type of thing is permitted here.

I've window-shopped Alpha Blue before but never followed through. I've been having a field day over at kayparker.net (first time), I really like the site layout, sample screenshots, even the pricing.
I was surprised to see Inari Vachs listed with names such as Cody Nicole and Tawny Pearl. Time isn't fair, but at least I can reminisce using a DVD player and not have to worry about tapes getting stuck in the head.
Heather Wayne and Kari Fox have always been fav's, they're worth a few bucks for compilations of complete scenes. Surprisingly, some of the Forced Sex collection shots looks familiar, maybe it's also worth getting.

But that would make that DVD from 2002 or before, and maybe their average quality has improved since.
I suspect their stuff might well be the best quality available for such a large number of scenes: a few clear, a few crap, most in the middle. Many of those scenes are probably now only available on VHS tapes, ie any masters are long lost. I'm not desperate about quality, and I'd expect clips from 20-30 years ago to be variable.
Ejac, like you I've spent a fun couple of hours window-shopping. Lots of names I recalled and lots of screenshots I enjoyed. Happy memories...
I would take porn movies and loops from the 70s and early 80s anyday over the stuff that is made today. I find it much more appealing. The sex scenes are far better. Women are in control of the sex - nothing like compared to today. While facials and mouth shots happened then the guys today seem more intent on submission and gagging. You bring up many of the reasons that I miss that era. Picking one over the other would get boring after a while though. +1 for change, and plenty of it, as long as the classic stuff is still made available.

Biggdiesal, can you tell me if those comps are time-stamped? I bought a couple of "Ultimate Collection"-type comps (Alexis Devell & Christy Canyon) on e-bay and, although the content was satisfactory, I really prefer my porn with time/footage counters.

The 70s is often called the "Golden Age of Porn" - and that is justified, because many, many classic porn movies were made. The movies had content, dialogues, self irony - it is true, there werent so many sex scenes, because these movies were made for the cinema. Today, too much movies are only "fucking-sucking-without-sense" movies. Not everything was gold in the Golden Age, some of the worst porn movies ever were made, but also some of the best. And it was also possible to show golden shower scenes, which is now taboo in US porn. Here in Europe, we already had a video system in the 70s, and it was widely distributed in the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. VCR ( Video Cassette Recording ) was the predecessor of VHS ( or to be more exact of Video 2000 ), and the first video stores in the 70s had quite a lot of porn movies. Price for a porn movie ranged from $ 150-400. Rental was 15 $ a day.
I don't think the porn was the problem. It was the horrible camera work and horrible lighting. There was always some stupid story going on and lots of camera stops on the dude. The camera work was so retarded that it made the scene way less hot. Many pornstars of the 80s were hot as hell. The camera work did them no justice.
I really think you hit-on the main problems with porn from back then. Almost every film I've seen from back then had horrible lighting. The main problem to me was always the camerawork though. Much like today, I think a lot of directors have the delusion that guys don't actually wanna be able to see the fucking. I think must of us did, and still do actually. I still prefer the overall atmosphere of films back then. If anything else, the performers really seemed to be having genuine fun most of the time. The sex wasn't exactly mind-blowing I'll admit, hell the scenes never lasted long enough, but they really did appear to be having more fun. Can't say I see a lot of that all the time now. And I really do think the women had and were allowed to have more control. Not a big fan of the old school porn (I refuse to call it classic). Too much story, sex scenes too short, poor camera work, and other problems hindered it. Also there wasn't variety. Mostly it was one on one in the pussy with some oral sex, with the occasional group sex scene. Porn has evolved, and almost all of it for the better.
The quality of camera work and lighting certainly varied a lot in the old days - MOST of today's stuff has a certain basic level of technical competence - but let me say a word in favor of EDITING. There is a world of skill and art involved in knowing "which shot and for how long". Some of the old-timers had the knack and some didn't, for sure. But overall the 70-80's stuff contrasts well with today's just-aim-it-and-hit-"Record" bunch. In which we see some young lovely mouthing a big stiffy up and down. And up and down. And up and down. And up and down. And (4min and 37sec later) up and down. Yeah, we've got our priceless Fast-Forward button. But today's makers could learn a lot about editing from the old stuff. Here's a hint: 100% of what's on your camcorder is NOT gold. Whether you're trying to tell a story or just change to a new shot, move on already.

The opening credits are definitely much better today than in the 80s. I remember when video first came out and it seemed like opening credits of every movie consisted of a picture of the performer in the movie with their name in blah unimaginative block lettering which would then flip end over end as it dissolved to the next cast member. I would have bet my left nut back then that this was copyrighted by Jerome Tanner and Western Video.

We bought one disc once from Kay Parker. It came like it had been done in somebody's house and was sent, I think, from Maylaysia. While there was a lot..and I mean a lot of stuff on the disc, the quality wasn't very good. We never bought another one. Maybe you'll have a better experience.

I would agree that most of 80s porn had terrible camerawork and lighting but I don't see that for the best of the 70s porn films (Alex De Renzy, Chuck Vincent, Anthony Spinelli, etc). These films were very well shot and edited, although the naturalistic lighting and short sex scenes aren't to modern tastes, that doesn't make them inherently inferior, just different from what we're use to today.
