They can't track down all that information fast enough so they are advising all production to cease immediately. *********************************************************** CHATSWORTH, Calif. - While appreciating the financial burden that a moratorium on production places upon the entire industry, we see no other recourse considering the dire consequences of not doing so. While the first-generation has been identified and quarantined, and AIM is rapidly creating a quarantine list for the second-generation, there is no doubt that there is already a third- and even fourth-generation in the outbreak. The third- and fourth-generation is not being quarantined; AIM simply can’t track down that many people fast enough. Thus we recommend that all adult companies cease production, or at the minimum shoot condom-only productions, until all women who have worked with Darren James since his last negative test, known as the “first-generation” have cleared. That will be on June 8, 2004. In addition, we recommend that any woman who has performed with Darren James since Feb. 25 contact AIM. Most women in this category will have already passed their 30-day window, but as AIM’s Dr. Sharon Mitchell stated this morning there is a 60-day window before a person who has had sex with an HIV-positive partner can be 99 percent certain that infection has not occurred. James is believed to have caught the virus while in Brazil around March 10, and later today AIM should be able to give a “guesstimate” of when that happened based on further tests on the amount of antibodies in James’ blood. This is about the lives of our friends, our family, and our peers. While it is highly unlikely, it is possible that every performer in the adult industry could have HIV by this point. If you are talent and choose to work, your putting your life and also anyone with whom you have any form of sexual contact your partner’s at risk. If you are a production company that hires talent that becomes infected with HIV during one of your productions – you may be found liable. Think about that when you’re looking at your balance sheets and your conscience. You will definitely lose two months worth of production, but you could lose your entire company and live out your life knowing you contributed to someone’s death for your profit. Another consideration is that the government is watching the manner in which the adult industry handles this very closely. The specter of regulation still looms over our shoulders and if the state deems that we, as an industry, handled this situation in an irresponsible manner, then this could be the final straw. That means condom-only forever. There are two companies, Vivid Video and Wicked Pictures, which have been producing condom-only videos for some time in the face of market demand for videos without condoms. Their decision to place the safety of their performers above their profit should be commended; it should also serve as an example. Tim Connelly, publisher of AVN adds, “If you are a performer in the adult industry at this moment, your body could very well be a deadly weapon and if you are a production company you are potentially putting innocent people in the line of fire. Some may consider this business a high wire act for performers, but there’s no reason to play Russian Roulette for the sake of another porn scene.”  [Link] |

I would say that the industry as we knew it last week may never been seen again, but come on. The companies are all about the bottom line and once this has all passed they will get back to making money. If everyone thinks about the business as a whole and not about themselves as a producer, then this should be handled in a manner that does not require government intervention. If that happens, how do we know that once the craze has disipated and production has returned back to normal that companies won't just go right back to non-condom anals, dps, dvs, daps, and creampies? I'm sure people said that the industry would never be the same again after the Marc Wallace incident. How long did that last? Of course, if the government does get involved then everything is a variable. But I do agree on one thing: I am definitely re-thinking my opinions on condoms as a consumer. Condoms never bothered me, but bareback scenes were usually a little more exciting for me. And to be completely honest if something crazy happens and we get a huge condom use increase in all of porn I wouldn't mind. No one should have to go through potentially fatal diseases just so we can all get off. Hey. Time will tell. All we need is a little patience. For the immediate future, yeah things will change. But I am thinking that best case scenario, as far as health and keeping the government at bay, things will be back to normal years down the road. Never say forever. It's all just temporary. Just my jaded view and please don't read it as being callous. This is all horrible, horrible news and one can't help but feel sick and worried for these people.

For some reason, I was under the impression that she had a doctorate in public health, but I was wrong about that. Does anyone know where AIM sends their blood samples to have the HIV test done, or do they do the test themselves? It doesn't list this information on their website. [Link] |

I'm reluctant to place too much faith in such certification but it's hard to believe they'd certify a lab whose chief had a PhD in Sex. | terri summers Member Come and play! 346 Posts 10/03 | Posted - Apr 15 2004 : 9:09AM Also i have a question, here in Europe yo do the test, but if you really think something might be wrong, you have to count from the last time you had sex 6months, and after those 6 months then is when you know a 100% if you are clear or not. How does that work in US? I mean if you test every month like most of us, i am sure there is no problem, but if you had sex with for example a 1st or whatever generation, you would have to wait 6 months before you are sure. Just a thought, on a set, there was a guy from a 2nd generation , he had sex with a girl, who later had sex whith another guy. Thats already 2 more people who are at risk am i right? The cast was filled with girls I like right now, such as Jennifer Luv and Kimberly Kane. And the first scene of the day was Kimberly Kane and Steven St. Croix. It all sounds great and the two seem to have put in a strong scene but then Devan interrupts his report to say that after that scene was wrapped news of the unfolding crisis reached the set and they cancelled the rest of the scenes. What Devan didn't seem to know when he wrote this and clearly what Kimberly and Steven had absolutely no way of knowing is that Steven's name is now on the 2nd generation list. According to AIM, the guys on the 2nd generation list have a 1% chance of being infected if one of the girls on the 1st generation list tests positive. However, there is still that chance. And I guess that means that Kimberly is now on the 3rd generation list or do I also somewhat misunderstand this? I realize that people are going to really be in a financial bind for the duration of this crisis and I understand the reasoning coming from companies who seem to have no intention of actually shutting down until June 8th and just waiting for the lists to be complete until they start filming. However, cautiousness is the best choice here, even if it means over-cautious. News is that right now JKP is the only company who has informed AIM that they will cease production until June 8th. There needs to be more companies like them.

That's what I am thinking too. I understand how hard this is going to be on the performers, but the companies are a completely different case. The more I am reading the more it seems that none of these companies have any intention of shutting down until June 8th. They all just want to start shooting again once AIM has fully compiled a list of 2nd generation and 3rd generation. I understand that and on some level it makes sense, but it is also too much of a chance to take. If someone tests positive in that 1st list then everything moves up a level and complicates things even more. When I started the other thread about this, entitled 60 Day Moratorium, I was fully thinking that most companies would just shut down or at least use condoms if they choose to continue shooting. That does not appear to be the case. Why? Most of the big companies surely have a backlot of material they can simply turn to and edit together for new product. They're not the ones who should be worried about money anyway. The performers are the ones who have valid reasons to worry about that now.

| *Mutt* Deactivated User 752 Posts 8/03 | Posted - Apr 15 2004 : 4:07PM from the first time I read any news of this it was obvious to me even as a layman that the only real way to contain this and protect everybody was an immediate shutdown - i am completely baffled by Sharon Mitchell's rather wishy washy statements for the first day and a half. It's a doomsday scenario she should have played out many times to be ready for just such an occurrence. But AIM is acting like this is the first time for them, first day she decides a 30 day quarantine is enough - i couldn't believe it when she came back the next day with 60 days because 30 day quarantine will only catch 75% as opposed to 99% at 60 days. This means for a full day and a half, and I assume all the years before this when AIM planned for this type of event, they thought 75% was ok? That's insanity - we're dealing with 12 girls lives here. 25% is a huge number when you are dealing with something this important. Yes I know she corrected it the next day but it's still pretty troubling. [Link] |
